Preparation for the Blessing of Homes Call or email the rectory to make an appointment to have your home blessed.

Before the Priest arrives at your home, here are a few reminders on how to prepare: v In the main room of the home, usually the kitchen or dining room, have placed on the table a

white cloth, a candle and/or an Icon or cross. You may place a small container of Holy Water on the table as well. [Note: Father will bring water with him]

v Turn off TV’s, radios, computers, etc. so as to keep focused on the blessing service v Please make sure that pets are heeled or restrained so as not to get underfoot while Father goes

through the home. v If you have any items to be blessed (Icon, Cross, etc.), put them on the table where the blessing

takes place. v When the Priest arrives, have everyone in the home gather around the table and join in the

blessing. Participation is important! v Invite friends or neighbors to participate and witness the beauty of this Tradition. v If you need to discuss a personal matter with Father, this is the time to do so. Time is made

between appointments for this reason. This year the Blessing of Homes will take place from Tuesday 19 January to Saturday 27 February. Please schedule an appointment with Father as soon as possible. Please allow for changes due to Father’s schedule or inclement weather.

Remember, the invitation to the priest to come and bless your home is an invitation to ask for the mercy of God upon the household. The sprinkling of the Holy Water is a sign of God’s presence in the home as an extension of His Holy House, the Church. It is a time to renew our commitment to

God as we begin another year in His mercy and love for mankind.

On Stewardship and the Orthodox Life Part 34: The Orthodox Life

“Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation…” (Luke 2: 29-30 RSV)

The Orthodox Church, like all Christian communities, is composed of human beings who struggle to regain the image in which God created them. We continue to fall short of the ideal God has set for us. It is, however, a pillar of Orthodoxy that we continue to struggle by maintaining faithfulness to the Tradition. In that Tradition, we center ourselves in prayer and worship. Living in the Church through the Church’s daily cycle of services along with the annual cycle of feasts, one encounters the entire Tradition. Our worship unfolds the mystery of the life of Christ. Hearing it, living it, week after week, year after year, it becomes embedded in us. Further, the discipline of the Church, the fasting and the prayers, also linked to the liturgical calendar, helps us both to follow the rhythm of the life of the Church, and to work back to that image in which God created us. The center of that rhythm is the Divine Liturgy. It is only through the Liturgy that we receive the Holy Mystery of the Eucharist, the Holy Communion with the Body and Blood of Christ. This is bodily and spiritual nourishment that continually changes us. It moves us along the path toward full restoration of our souls and bodies. If we allow ourselves to live within this Holy Tradition, then we shall also live the same way outside of Church, becoming the light unto the nations that Christ intended us to be. However, we must constantly be aware of our own shortcomings. We fall and get up again, fall and get up. Yet, in the modern world, there are many who are part of the Orthodox Church in name only. There are many worldly distractions and temptations, and many fall short of the mark. We fall easily into the distractions of houses and entertainment, electronic devices and exotic vacations. And then not only is our prayer duty compromised, we also neglect the needs of others, needs that in some cases are extreme, and in others are simple and close, but ignored. God has committed to us only one life to live here on earth. The single purpose of that life is to prepare us for an eternal life that follows. That preparation is done in the community that is the Church. Should we find ourselves so distracted by the allure of this world that we either ignore or compromise our commitment to the Body of Christ, the Church, that eternal life with God is put in jeopardy. Part 35: Talents I

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31 RSV) Among the many things that God has lent to us for use in our lifetime here on earth are our talents. The word “talent” comes into the English language from the original Greek word that meant a sum of money, a denomination of coin – like a silver dollar. Today the word means an aptitude or a skill. Like all the other gifts that are ours only by the love and generosity of God, talents have been lent to us by God. We have borrowed them for this life for one purpose: to help prepare us and the Christian community for the next life. We are to look to God for all that we possess, or think we possess. Like our money or our time, our talents are not possessed by us – we have them to use. When we are sick or in need of a doctor’s care, we rely on the delicate touch and the expertise of a physician. His or her knowledge of the human body, its functions and its diseases, as well as methods of cure and care, are not the doctor’s own: they are a showing forth of the power of God. God has lent the doctor these talents. Name it: the skill of the carpenter with hammer and saw; the strength of blacksmith who rings out hammer on anvil; the beautiful sounds of a choir or soloist; the creative genius of a computer programmer; the caring love of a priest for his parishioners; the dedication to protecting our lives and country shown by law enforcement officers and members of the military – these are not skills gained simply by study and hard work, nor are they just “in the genes” as explained by many. God has created human beings in His image. He has entrusted to humans a part of His own essence to be used in His service and for His people. But these types of talents are not the only talents that have been let to us by God. It may be a new and different way to look at “talents,” but in keeping with the original (and Biblical) use of the word talent, consider the following: Property is a talent. All that we have belongs to God, without question. The only purpose that we “own” anything is to further the cause of Christ and His Church. Every Baptized and Chrismated Christian is to share in the work of Christ and the outreach of the Church into the world. If our “property” is money – the use of that money is a talent to be perfected into how best to use money in the outreach of the Church. (Continued next week)

God & Logic By Fr. John Wallace, St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church, Charlotte, NC

Have you ever noticed that most popular songs are romantic in nature? They almost always are about the romantic relationship between two people. The challenge for an artist is to make his song distinctive through whatever means he can find. I am reminded of a song from some years ago with the title, I believe, “Baby, You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet.” In order to make the song memorable (and have a little fun) the artist purposely stuttered the first syllable of “Baby” so that it came out “Be-Be-Be-Baby, You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet”. Keep that idea in mind, that “you ain’t seen nothin’ yet”, and I will come back to it. In the Gospel according to Mark we read, “If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s sake will save it” (Mark 8:34-35). As the second verse points out, this life we live basically boils down to one question: Will we sacrifice this life for the next one or the next one for this one? This life or the next one? That is our choice. Let us say you decide to dedicate this life for the life to come and want to know how to go about doing it. The first verse tells us how. It describes picking up your cross, denying yourself, and following Christ. A handy way to remember that is PDF. No, I am not talking about a file you email to someone, but an easy way to remember our path. “P” stands for Picking-up your cross, “D” stands for Denying yourself, and “F” stands for Following Christ. Picking-up your cross means accepting the everyday burdens of this life, like homework, chores, paying the mortgage, and mowing the grass; not to mention a host of other tasks and obligations. It means accepting the burdens and pains of this life, the uncertainty, stress, and trouble that come along our way. It means accepting them, not fleeing from them. We handle them as best we can with God’s help. But picking-up your cross also involves more than the ordinary troubles of life, heavy as they can be; it also means we have to pick-up our own cross of love for God and neighbor. This leads us to denying ourselves. This means doing what needs to be done, what should be done in loving service to God and others, instead of what we want to do. A parent does this for his/her children. A husband does this for his wife as she does for him. Sometimes we are called to do this for our parents when they can no longer do for themselves. This means we may have to help someone at a time that is inconvenient for us. We may have to go to the grocery store when we would rather be out on a walk. We may have to attend some function when we would rather be watching TV. But if we do these things, we are denying ourselves and more importantly, following Christ. Think about it. What did He do? He did not have to leave Heaven. He did it for our sake, not His. Look at scripture. Where did Jesus go? We see Him in the temple worshipping God. We see Him helping and healing others. We see Him witnessing to the goodness and glory of God. We see Him enduring with grace when His words are twisted out of context, when He is falsely accused, and when He is beaten and murdered. We see that before His death on the Cross, He died many small deaths in the interruptions and inconveniences of His ministry for us. Likewise, we are called to endure many mini-deaths in the sacrifice of our time, attention, and energy for the well-being and benefit of others. If we accept our cross, deny ourselves, and follow Christ in His life, service, and death, we will follow Him in His resurrection and ultimately into His kingdom. Take every blessing you have experienced in this life and expand it exponentially and you have not even begun to conceive of what the kingdom of God is like. If you think this present life is too good to pass up, then as the songwriter said about the kingdom of God, “Be-Be-Be-Baby, You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet”. Amen.
