FAZtor’s Notes: By: Fr. Arnold Zamora Christmas parties are showing up on my calen-dar! This Saturday is our Altar Server’s Christmas Party, after the 5PM mass. Thanks to Tri Ngu-yen, our Altar Server coordinator, for organizing

this event for our young liturgical ministers of the altar. This Sunday is also our Homebound Mass at 1:30 pm, with a Christmas celebration right after, both in the Flanagan Center. We thank our Lay Canossians led by Jim Regan for hosting our Home-bound masses, celebrated four times throughout the year. This Sunday is December 8th and this date is always special be-cause it is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This particular feast is always a Holy Day of Obligation, except when it falls on a Sunday. This Sunday, being December 8th, we will observe the Second Sunday of Advent. Sundays of Advent outrank Solemnities of the General Calendar, as per the Table of Litur-gical Days (12 & 13). The celebration of the Solemnity of the Immacu-late Conception is moved to Monday, December 9th; however, alt-hough the rubrics of the Solemnity are in place, there is no obligation of the faithful to attend mass. So, it is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year. We are so honored and blessed that a high ranking dignitary of the church will be visiting our Holy Name Bible Study Group on Wednesday, December 11th at 7:00PM in the Flanagan Center. Ac-cording to parishioner Nelson Lao, the Archdiocese of San Francisco Chinese Ministry has arranged for Archbishop Savio Tai Fai Hon to visit the Bible Study Group. Archbishop Hon is the Apostolic Nuncio to Greece. Born in Hong Kong, he is a Salesian or from the religious order of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB). Welcome to Holy Name Archbishop Hon!

My former seminary classmate, Archbishop Bernadito Auza, currently the Permanent Observer to the United Nation or the Pope’s representative to the UN, was recently appointed by Pope Francis to be the new Apostolic Nuncio to Spain. Apostolic Nuncios serve as ambassadors of the Holy See, or the Vatican City state. Archbishop Auza's appointment came less than two years before the Philippines will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity to its shores, courtesy of the Spanish missionaries who were part of Ferdi-nand Magellan's historic voyage. The Spanish colonizers celebrated the first Catholic Mass on March 31, 1521 in Limasawa island. This time, the role is reversed. The representative of the Roman Catholic Church to Spain is a citizen of a former Spanish colony. To quote Philippine Bishop Ruperto Santos of Balanga, “This is very significant and meaningful that the new papal nuncio to Spain would be a Filipino.

On the forthcoming grace-filled event of 500 years of Christiani-zation of our country, the Philippine Church gives her gift and gratitude in the person of Archbishop Auza.” As we continue our Advent journey remember this: SMILE will always be the best medicine to make us feel younger. PRAYER will always be the best solution to minimize the stresses around us. LOVE will always be the best gift in this world to be happy. And GOD will always be the best partner along our journey.

LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS GIFT? Honor your loved ones, whether living or deceased, with a gift of a leaf on our Tree of Life. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25 engraving charge. The order form is on page 5. For more information, please contact the Parish office at (415) 664-8590.

REFLECTION ADVENT IS A TIME TO CULTIVATE NIGHT VISION It involves keeping the light of HOPE alive even when we

journey through the darkness of the world, our politics, our Church, and even our very lives. Advent calls us also to slow down in order to make room for the One who is the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE. It calls us to seek directions from the

angels, the Spirit, and people like John the Baptist, Isaiah, and Mary, who call us to make the appropriate course correc-tions through CONVERSION that leads us in the right direc-

tion. -Daniel G. Groody, “Daily Reflections for Advent and

YOUR HEALTH MATTERS!

Your Health Matters It’s All in your Head

Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. It is the No. 5

cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States! Stroke is a medical emergency. Every second counts, because time lost is brain lost! Know these stroke warning signs and share them with others: 1. Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especial-

ly on one side of the body. 2. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding. 3. Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. 4. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordina-

tion. 5. Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

An easy way to remember is FAST

FAST is an acronym used as a mnemonic to help detect and enhance responsiveness to the needs of a person having a stroke. The acro-nym stands for Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties and Time to call emergency services.[1]

Facial drooping: A section of the face, usually only on one side, that is drooping and hard to move. This can be recognized by a crooked smile.

Arm weakness: The inability to raise one's arm fully Speech difficulties: An inability or difficulty to understand or produce

speech Time: If any of the symptoms above are showing, time is of the es-

sence; call the emergency services and go to the hospital imme-diately.

If you or someone with you has one or more of these signs, don’t de-lay! Call 911 or the emergence medical services (EMS) number imme-diately so an ambulance-ideally with advance life support-can come. Also, check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms appeared. It’s important to take immediate action. If given within three hours of the start of symptoms, a clot-busting medication can reduce long-term disability for the most common type of stroke.

To your health, Angela Testani R.N.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 8, 2019 Even in Church circles these days it is quite common to engage a management consultancy company to help find people for a particular diocesan job. This is a good idea and often these companies find excellent people for the task.

I recently saw a consultancy profile, however, for a diocese seeking a lay chancellor. We all know these people must be upright citizens, but I am convinced that Jesus himself may have been chal-lenged to fill this job description! Apart from having degrees in civil and canon law, the desired applicant had to have “outstanding Catholic faith, an exemplary moral character and have nothing in his or her background that could cause the Church embarrassment or scandal in the future.”

A couple of days later I came across a tongue-in-cheek sum-mary of a management consultant’s report on those who had applied to lead the earliest Christian Church:

“John: Says he is a Baptist, but definitely doesn't dress like one. Has slept in the outdoors for months on end, has a weird diet, and picks fights in public with religious leaders.

“Peter: Has a bad temper, even has been known to curse. Had a big run-in with Paul in Antioch. Aggressive. A loose cannon.

“Paul: Powerful, CEO type of leader and fascinating preacher. However, short on tact, unforgiving with young ministers, harsh, and has been known to preach all night.

“Jesus: Has been popular at times, but once when his following grew to 5000 he managed to offend them all and it dwindled down to some faithful women and his best friend. Seldom stays in one place very long.

“Judas: His references are solid. Conservative. Good connections. Knows how to handle money. Great possibilities here."

In today’s Gospel we hear what a fierce character John the Baptist was. He lets the Pharisees and Sadducees have it with both barrels. These groups were the publicly devout churchgoers of their day. They were often hypocrites, professing one thing and doing an-other. We know they regularly demanded observances of ordinary Jews that they did not live out themselves. No wonder John disliked them so much.

Their religious observance was a charade, focused on their needs, their souls, their salvation. They were going to get to heaven, and everyone else be damned! They even come out to the wilderness to get baptized. This was like going to salvation mega-store. They buy a little of everything, just to be sure. John attacks them violently and in doing so condemns their privatized religion and lack of social responsi-bility.

In Christianity there is an important distinction between per-sonal and private faith. Personal faith knows that God is close and intimate, which is what we celebrate at Christmas. For Christians, however, there is no such thing as private faith. We should always be careful of hymns that only ever speak about “me and Jesus against the world.” Inheriting the promises made to Israel and seeing them as intended for all God’s children, we believe we are saved AS A PEO-PLE. For us, it is “we and Jesus for the world.”

If we have no interest in justice, development, and peace for our world. If we don’t care to know our fellow parishioners. If all we want is to be left alone, to come to Mass, say our prayers and save our souls, then we need to hear the story of Christmas all over again.

May this Advent, then, see John the Baptist do what he does best: “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” © Richard Leonard SJ
