Pastor’s Poetry Post-Its

“Another Advent”

Advent already! Yikes! The mad Christmas rush begins: presents to buy, parties to plan, cards to write, trees to trim and halls to deck...Just thinking about it tires me out and I long for January to put it all behind us. The message of the First Sunday of this Advent season is: “Be watchful.” Perhaps a Buddhist twist on the phrase is more helpful: “Be mindful.” Santa Claus is coming to town and Jesus Himself has already come long ago. Our challenge in these Advent days is to be mindful that the Savior has come to earth. Perhaps it was so long ago that the magnitude of His birth is lost in the tides of time. Mindfulness is a heightened awareness of the reason for the season: Jesus. Advent anticipation, symbolized in the lighting of another candle each week and the opening of little panels on an Advent calendar, is the best antidote to the pressures of the Christmas season just around the corner. It is Jesus we are waiting for. As He was born in a humble stable, pray that He would be born in our hearts, especially in its most painful, doubtful and lonely corners. O Come, O Come Emmanuel — I need You!

Fr. Hugh, OP

St. Patrick, never leave me in the lurch,

Swimming in Irish whiskey. Toward my perch

Advent is drawing on, time for more church,

More Gospel readings, lessons from St. Paul,

Time to lend ears to dancing David’s call.

The youngest son of Jesse calmed King Saul

In madness, plucking his ten-stringed lyre

Until Israel raised him from a byre

And launched his songs onto a sea of fire.

ADVENT 2017 This year the 4th Sunday of Advent is Sunday,

On December 24th, Christmas Eve Masses will be held at Holy Innocents at 4pm, 6pm and 10:00pm

Advent is here! Today, December 3, 2017 is the first Sunday of Advent. We prepare ourselves for the coming of the Lord! It is a time that we renew in ourselves the joy that came into the world on that first Christmas and we look forward to His coming again at the end of time. Our 7th grade Saturday Class has already started to prepare. These beautiful, creative and joyful students decided to a “Holiday Service” project for the Williamsbridge Manor Nursing Home in the Bronx. To raise funds for materials the students planned a “Holiday Bake Sale: for our Saturday Session. They created posters and flyers...they even wrote and sang their own jingle! They baked, decorated, helped the younger students purchase goodies and sold raffle tickets. Matthew Bigley, along with Ella and Kate Moroney donated their new and unopened personal items to make gift baskets. The morning was so exciting and fun. Every 7th grader dressed in festive clothing and even Santa Claus and his elf came to visit. It was a huge success….they raised $245 within an hour! They will now be able to complete their Service Project for the Nursing Home...they will be making holiday centerpieces for the residents. We thank our Catechist, Mrs. Fiona Moroney for her leadership. We also thank Gail Bigley and Rebeka Lavigne for their help. Most importantly, I want to thank the 7th graders who not only raised money for the Nursing Home project, but brought such enthusiasm to the day and showed us the REASON FOR THE SEASON! It is so obvious that their hearts are full of love! Maria Lamorgese, Director Ph 914-769-3297, Ext. 1 [email protected]

Please Note: Our 6th grade class, under the leadership of Vanessa Kalle, Lorraine McDermott and Jim Horrigan, is collecting gently used Christmas decorations for those in need. A Donation Box is located at the Tompkins Avenue entrance to the church.

A Mass sponsored by The Westchester Foundation for Autism

will be celebrated Sunday, December 10th at

Our Lady of Pompeii at 1:30pm.

(Please note, the Church is not wheelchair accessible)

To welcome the season of Advent we are changing the Mass setting used during our liturgies. We will now use the Mass of the Angels and Saints, one of the compositions of Steven Janco. Although it is not in our hymnals, we have used this setting in the past, and we think it will be familiar to you. The setting has been updated to match the new 2010 revised text of the Roman missal. During Advent, there will be a few additional changes to our liturgy. First, the Gloria is omitted. It is neither sung nor recited. This is a way of toning down the liturgy as we prepare for and await the birth of Jesus. This change also helps the words of the Gloria ring out fresh when we sing them on the day for which it was intended, Christmas! Remember the song the angels are singing at Bethlehem? Another addition will be a sung Kyrie during the opening rites of the liturgy. We will continue to sing the Alleluia as our Gospel Acclamation, as the Gloria is the song of Christmas, Alleluia is the song of Easter and is omitted in Lent, not Advent. Given the joyful anticipation of the season of Advent, it would be hard to stifle the singing of the acclamation! The new Alleluia is from the The Glendalough Mass by Liam Lawton. It is a lovely melody that all will enjoy singing. Advent from the Latin word, Adventus, means “coming” – so these changes, as well as the changing of the church décor, vestments and the presence of the Advent wreath are all meant to focus our attention on the expectant waiting and preparing for the Nativity of Jesus.
