I know that good Chrisans disagree with me about parcipang in Halloween. Chrisan media is filled with admonions to uerly reject the celebraon of Halloween. The reasons are mulple, but all are rooted in the fact that the contemporary celebraons of Halloween have become infested with darkness. While I respect and understand the posion, and even shared it to some degree in years past, I no longer do so. The term "Halloween" is derived from "All Hallows Eve", the Chrisan Vigil of the celebraon of the Chrisan Feast of "All Saints". I will serve as a deacon at the altar for the Vigil Mass of All Saints day. The beauful readings at the Liturgy point us toward the perfecon of the Saints in heaven and encourage us to become saints in our own journey here on earth - through living the words of Jesus in the beatudes. Like many Catholics - and many other Chrisans - I am concerned that the current approach to the celebraon of Halloween, with its undue influence on goblins, ghosts and the demonic, presents potenal dangers. All Chrisan parents and grandparents should act accordingly. However, I suggest that the state of the culture also presents an opportunity for Chrisans to do what we have always done, live like missionaries in our own culture. Halloween focuses many people on the reality of death - and the quesons associated with contemplang death. In so doing it may open people to existenal quesons concerning the very meaning of life. This presents us with an invitaon as evangelizers and missionaries. The vigil of All Saints came to be known as "All Hallows Eve" or Halloween. While some consider Halloween to be "pagan" in origin, it is actually the eve of this great Chrisan Feast of All Saints. Many of the customs which surround it reflect the Chrisan confidence in our triumph over death in Christ and our bold rejecon of the claim that evil has any more power over us. As for the growing pagan pracces around us, I am not afraid of them. I will do all that I can to ensure that my grandson, in fact, all of our grandchildren, will be a part of a new generaon of those who, bearing the name Chrisan, do what Chrisans always do, bring about the conversion of Naons and cultures. I suggest that this is a part of what it means to be a missionary Church. We are all called to be missionaries. We live in a new missionary age. It is me to do what Chrisans have always done; lead the men and women of this age to living faith and transform cultures by the way we live our lives. [A note from Fr. Tom: A good idea for Catholic/Chrisan parents is to have your children read about or watch movies of Saints and encourage them to dress up like one of them for All Hollows Eve if they really want to join other children. The Church has always recognized the existence of evil. She proclaims the Savior, Jesus Christ, who leads all men and women to freedom over evil, in all of its manifesta!ons. The Church also has o"en taken secular holidays and, in a sense, “bap!zed them", as a means of infusing the values of the Gospel into the culture. All Souls Q: November is called the month of All Souls. More recently, it has been called the Commemora!on of All the Faithful Departed. Can you tell us more about this feast and the remembranc-es of this month? A: November 2nd, the Commemora!on of All the Faithful Departed, dovetails with November 1st, the feast of All Saints. The saints, our models of Chris!an living, are one with God in heaven. All the faithful departed are those who have died with hope and trust in a loving God who calls us to greater growth and development, even beyond death. This growth and development occurs in a state of being that we have tradi!onally called purgatory. These November feasts vividly remind us of the rich reality known as the communion of saints. This belief stresses the strong affirma!on that the church is always one in Christ. Death does not sever any of the bonds that unite us in Christ. That is why it is a fi^ng prac!ce to pray for the dead and to ask them to pray for us. Just as we do that for each other when we are alive, so, too, do we con!nue that bond and concern for each other even beyond death.
