A Family Perspective

To experience the peace which Christ prom-

ises we must shed our grudges, jealousy &

feelings of being misunderstood, unappreci-

ated or ignored. Peace & anger don’t mix.

Today’s gospel warns, if you want peace in your heart & home,

get rid of your anger. Anger is too costly.

One of Pope Francis’ major and most frequent teachings to the

Church regards the love and mercy we should give to others.

The Responsorial Psalm, Psalm 119, the longest in the Book of

Psalms. It is an “acrostic” psalm, with each of the 176 verses

beginning with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet in alphabetical

order! It speaks of the law of God, rather than legal law. God’s

law is His word written in the hearts of people. The Gospel might

inspire us to review the Year of Mercy, when we showed mercy

or received it from others.

Tuesday is St. Valentine’s Day. Recent scholarship casts some

doubt on his having existed, but since he is the Patron Saint of

Love, we still honor the meaning of the day. It also coincides

with Pope Francis’ teachings, mentioned above. Also, today

(Sunday) is the 31st annual World Marriage Day. The Offertory

Meditation is the famous “Wedding Song” and the Choir An-

them sings of giving love which can change our lives!

Begins weekend of March 4 & 5 – Fr. John Collins will

preach at all Masses.

March 6, 7, & 8 (Monday – Wednesday) 7:00 PM. Bring a

friend.

“Can you describe what happens in those events in your life

in which you experience the presence of God?”

COME, learn the importance of developing your own “faith sto-

ry” from your experiences, both negative (“Why doesn’t prayer

work?”) and positive (In yearning to do good, we are uncovering

the grace of God within).

Monday – March 6: What Good is God?

Tuesday – March 7: Why Prayers Don’t Work

Wed. – March 8: Ten Kinds of People We Don’t Have To Love

Dear Friends,

You and so many others throughout our Diocese have been so

very generous in helping us restore our Cathedral of the Immacu-

late Conception and for that I am so very, very grateful.

This week we are sending a follow-up letter to those who have

not responded, hoping that they will join us.

If you have not yet joined us, please do. The building is in

honor of Our Lady and we want to leave it as a place of inspira-

tion for our children and grandchildren.

The pledge you are asked to make is for five years. Please

consider a pledge equal to what you contribute annually to the

parish.

God bless you all and know daily of my prayers for blessing in

abundance upon you and your family.

Most gratefully yours,

Father Yeazel

Chair Restoration Campaign

From Our Pastor

******* We have heard, seen and in some cases experienced first hand the

confusion, heartache and brokenness that has resulted from the

Executive Order issued by our President regarding refugee re-

settlement.

The order in summary:

Halts the refugee admissions process for 120 days to deter-

mine additional security with procedures that are needed.

Cuts the number of refugees admitted in 2017 from 110,000

to 50,000.

Suspends resettlement of refugees from Syria.

Suspends the issuance of visas to individuals from countries

of concern, including Syria, Iraq, Iran & other countries.

Today, with more than 65 million people forcibly displaced from

their homes, the need for the U.S. to show leadership in

welcoming refugees and provide freedom from persecution is

more urgent than ever.

Refugees who come through the program go through a rigorous,

extensive vetting process. The Executive Order halts the arrival

of refugees for at least 120 days, including those who have

already gone through up to two years of vetting. This will affect

some families already in transit. Standing up for refugees and for

the life-saving resettlement program is consistent with our values

as Americans and as Catholics.

In the Last Judgment scene from the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus

said, “When I was a stranger, you welcomed me.” While certain

guidelines may need to be set for the sake of immigration, the

complete closure of our nation to immigrants in desperate need

goes against our tradition and faith. Now is the time to make

your voice heard.

A New Hospital Prayer Book - Catholic Truth Society This prayer booklet offers well-loved prayers, medita-tions, and encouragement for those in the hospital. Yet, this booklet is full of helpful prayers for all, and its pock-et sized. Here is an example of one such prayer:

Prayer to Christ the Healer In the comfort of your love,

I pour out to you, my Saviour,

The memories that haunt me,

The anxieties that perplex me,

The fears that stifle me,

The sickness that prevails upon me,

And the frustration of all the pain

that weaves about within me.

Lord, help me to see your peace in my turmoil,

your compassion in my sorrow,

your forgiveness in my weakness,

And, your love in my need.

Touch me, O Lord, with your healing power and

strength.

FAITH IN ACTION Refugee Assistance Committee

Members of our parish community attended the Bishop’s Mass

last week in support of refugees. It was an uplifting and inspiring

opportunity for the Syracuse community to come together in

prayer. Gratefulness was expressed toward all who labor to reset-

tle refugees in Central New York. We invite you to pray with us:

Almighty and merciful God,

whose Son became a refugee and had no place to all his own;

look with mercy on those who today are fleeing from danger,

homeless and hungry.

Bless those who work to bring them relief;

inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts;

and guide the nations of the world towards that day

when all will rejoice in your Kingdom of justice and peace;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
