I know they say pride is a sin, but I am so very proud to be associated with our spiritual care team
at Holy Cross. So I boldly confess that sin to you now!
On Sunday, December 22, we were out in “full force” to host a Blue Christmas labyrinth walk and
service of longing and hope at the winter solstice. More than forty people turned out – members of
Holy Cross and their friends as well as others who heard about the opportunity through letters or
personal invitations. They had the opportunity to process and let go of pain and despair that can
hang heavy during the holiday season. We lit candles for hope, peace, joy and love, shared Holy
Communion together, and members of our team stayed at the altar to offer laying on of hands and
healing prayer to any who asked for it. They shared refreshments together in the Abbey and lin-
gered long for conversation. When I asked one visitor, “Tell me who you lost this year,” the answer was,
“myself.” So people came for a variety of reasons.
It was a wonderful example of God’s People Doing God’s Work and I want to thank all of our team who
helped bring Christmas to those who needed it in a very particular way this year: Michael Burkhardt, Vernon
Adams, Gail Cebelak, Lynda Ashbay, Chuck Hunter, Marilyn Grable, Dottie Taylor, Lillian May, Karen Ana-
stasiow, Cheryl Pearson, Karla Pearson, Rich Pearson, Ally Anderson, Lynette Hoelter, Ellen Batkie, and Do-
ris Miller.
As part of the service, I prepared this prayer for joy that I share with you as a prayer for the new year as 2014
begins:
God of hope,
take us to those deep waters of joy
that give refuge
beneath crashing waves of despair.
Re-mind us
that when grief and disappointment churn,
when turmoil, failures and frustrations overwhelm,
falling into that joy can be a surprise,
an unexpected gift.
It can catch us off our guard.
Give us wisdom to know the difference
between happiness others need to see on our faces
and deep joy you long to plant in our hearts.
Give us grace
to receive this joy when it meets us,
to embrace this joy when we meet it,
guilt-free.
Let this joy be a healing balm,
a sign of resurrection,
permission to live again,
reason to hope again.
AMEN.

114th Annual Winter Retreat January 17-19, 2014
Michi-Lu-Ca
Get ready for a weekend of winter fun and Bible Study at Camp Michi-Lu-Ca. We’ll be joining up with the wonderful folks of Calvary Lutheran in Clarkston and Shepherd of the Lakes in Walled Lake. The fantastic Michi-Lu-Ca kitchens will provide all our food and meals. Just bring yourself, your winter gear, clothes, sleeping bag, pillow, and toothbrush. Cost is $95 per person. RSVP with payment to Holy Cross by January 5th. Questions? Contact Pastor Ben at church or email
… it’s time to change a light bulb and the left side of the aisle begins a debate on “change” while the right side of the aisle musters five volunteers: one to hold the bulb and four to turn the ladder. ...you think the four food groups are coffee, cream of mushroom soup, lutefisk and Jell-O. … you carry silverware in your pock-et to church in case there’s a pot-luck. … you have an uncontrollable urge to sit in the back of any room. … your house is a mess because you’re saved by grace, not works. … you think the communion wafers are too spicy. … your mother reminds you often that she wishes you’d studied the organ. … your mother could give any Jewish mother a run for her money in the guilt department. … you think that an ELCA bride and an LCMS groom make for a mixed marriage.

Holy Cross Statement of Welcome
Holy Cross is a Christ-centered community in the Lutheran tradition (ELCA).
We believe all people are created in God’s image.
We are passionate about the radical hospitality that Jesus showed all people.
We are committed to being a community of that same kind of hospitality.
We welcome all people to our life and ministry together…
…in worship, at the font, at the table and in fellowship,
regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, age
or any other category society uses to distinguish between people.
We are Holy Cross and you are welcome here.
There is no longer Jew nor Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female;
for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28
Un-Decking the Halls Join us on January 11th at 9AM to take down the Christmas trees, wreaths and other decorations. Many hands make quick and light work!

Thank you to Holy Cross Lutheran members, and families & friends for your over-whelming generosity of Christmas gifts for 10 young boys (ages 7-12) at the Methodist Children’s Home in Redford. Just imagine in your mind and heart the joy and happiness on the faces of these children on Christmas morning as they gathered around the tree. Remembered, cared for, and not forgotten. There are approximately 80 children of all ages currently living at the Children’s Home. Very often these children arrive at the Children’s Home in the middle of the night with only the clothing on their backs. Additional designated monies collected through the offering helped us purchase ‘General Wish List’ items; diapers, socks, pajamas, un-derwear, and warm/clean clothing. Thank you also for the donated hats, scarves, gloves and mittens. All have been thankfully received and will provide warmth on the cold and snowy days ahead. This will be a continuing outreach throughout the year. We thank you again for a terrific beginning for this social (community) ministry. Can Religion Help Reduce
Violent Crime? Two studies suggest the answer is yes, both by creating a moral climate that fos-ters respect among neighbors and by helping to form individual consciences of young adults. Communities with high lev-els of active participation in congrega-tions may be particularly effective in re-ducing assaults, rapes and murders in some poor areas that are most likely to suffer from violent crimes, the research indicates. The latest edition of Ahead of the Trend explores new research on the relationship between crime and religion. Visit http://blogs.thearda.com and find the Nov. 29th article by David Briggs.
