We thank the current year’s Students’ Council Executive with teacher-advisor Mr. Richard Coleman, for organizing what we an- ticipate will be a successful Spirit Week, and for all of their efforts and enthusiasm on behalf of the school and their peers. We are so proud of the courage and commitment of all of the candidates and look forward to seeing what Students’ Council 2012-2013 brings to our rich tradition of student leadership, mission service, and spirited commitment. We are so pleased with the Silver Medal results of all members of the HC bands and vocals group who traveled to Florida recently. Congratulations to these students and to their leaders, Mr. David Orser, Mrs. Diane McCombs, and Ms. Stacy Check Drumm. UPDATE FROM PASTORAL SERVICESWe offer our sincere thanks to Students’ Council and to CICS for their efforts and leadership during this year’s ShareLent Campaign which enabled us to reach our fundraising goal of $8500.00. We also congratulate all those who participated in this year’s Thinkfast which raised close to $2000.00 for Development & Peace. Special thanks to those staff who came to help out, especially Mr. Justin Murphy, Mr. Jeff Brady, Ms. LeSarge, and our Saturday morning Breakfast Crew, Ms. June Hanna and Ms. Deb Myers.

The month of May will be a busy one. Our choir and many of our students will be attending the Catholic Education Week Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral here in Kingston on Monday, May 7th with Archbishop Brendan O’Brien presiding.

On Tuesday, May 15th we will be having a School Assembly in the Gym at 9:30 a.m. to hear a presentation by “Free the Children” called “Vow for Change”. This will be fol-lowed by a day-long workshop on Social Justice and Leadership Training for our Students’ Council and CICS students. Don’t forget the PARTNERS IN MISSION FOOD BLITZ on Wednesday, May 16th from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m . This annual event in support of the local food bank will start here at our school which will once again be a collection and sorting centre. Now that the nicer weather has returned, more students are leaving school property at the lunch hour. We all need to act responsibly and respect the property of our school community at all times. Let’s continue the good work of our Eco-Team. Respect for others includes leaving communal and private property undamaged. Students are reminded that they are not to gather in groups and linger near the streets and

yards of our community. Represent yourselves and our school with pride.

ECO-CORNERThe month of May marks the end of the EcoSchools certification process here at Holy Cross. The Green Team has been busy col-lecting information about the state of our environmental efforts. Our garbage audit for the 2012 year revealed that on average students produce 107 kg of garbage per year. This is is a significant drop from last year which had a value of 140 kg. About 50% of this includes recyclables such as paper and plastic containers. This means that we need to continue to make efforts to use the recycling bins placed in the 80 or so locations around the school. Our recycling audit revealed that each student recycles on average 17 kg per year, up from 14 kg as recorded for last year. 96% of classrooms blinds are being closed afterschool which is a positive measure as blinds help retain heat at night. Our energy audits revealed that 84% of lights, 93% of computer peripherals, and 48% of monitors are being turned off when not in use. Finally, the Green team has been growing plants in the school’s greenhouse that will be planted in this year’s outdoor vegetable garden. Keep it Green HC!

SCHOOL TEXTBOOKSWe are very pleased with the responsible way in which students are dealing with textbooks. As we have requested, students are bringing in books needing repair. Do not leave textbooks in the classroom or exam room. Holy Cross textbooks are due back no later than the day of the individual student’s last exam.
