First Sunday in Lent
Good People of Holy Cross,
Happy Lent! Have you found that special room within yourself? I do not go to mine often enough, but when I do, it is a special gift. Jesus says, “But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret” (Mt 6:6). The inner room is a figure of speech for your innermost self, your deepest self where you are alone with God. God dwells within us. At the Last Supper, Jesus said that he and the Father will come and make our home with us. God is everywhere. We can find God in the vast array of colors in a sunrise, the smile of a child, the majesty of a cascading waterfall, the graceful flight and song of a Carolina wren. We find God in those we love. We see God also within us, in our inner room, its what Lent’s all about! There are many kinds of prayer. God is ready to talk to us anytime, anywhere: kneeling before a crucifix, worshiping with others, or in Holy Communion when Jesus in present within us. In a variety of ways, the Holy Spirit helps us to pray. One way is in our inner room: talking to our Father in secret. “Contemplation is a mystery in which God reveals himself to us at the very Center of our most intimate self,” Thomas Merton wrote. Some may think that type of prayer is only for monks but talking to God in your heart is for everyone. God takes the initiative and is there before us. All we need to do is show up and listen. How we open ourselves may be different for each person. Personally, I need to quiet down and concentrate. I like to be alone and I like silence. There are different methods: ask the Holy Spirit to help you find one that works for you. I promise you will emerge from your inner room full of love, ready to reach out to others with a visit or phone call, an apology or a prayer. Have you found your inner room? God is always waiting. Feliz Cuaresma! ¿Has encontrado esa habitación especial dentro de ti? No voy a la mía con mucha frecuencia, pero cuando lo hago, es un regalo especial. Jesús dice: "Pero cuando ores, ve a tu habitación interior, cierra la puerta y ora a tu Padre en secreto" (Mt 6, 6). La sala interior es un tipo de lenguaje para tu ser más íntimo, tu ser más profundo en el que estás solo con Dios. Dios mora dentro de nosotros. En la última cena, Jesús dijo que él y el Padre vendrán y harán hogar con nosotros. Dios está en todos lados. Podemos encontrar a Dios en la vasta gama de colores en una salida del sol, la sonrisa de un niño, la majestuosidad de una cascada, el canto y el vuelo elegante de un ave carolina. Encontramos a Dios en los que amamos. ¡También vemos a Dios dentro de nosotros, en nuestra habitación interior, de eso se trata la Cuaresma! Hay muchos tipos de oración. Dios está listo para hablar con nosotros en cualquier momento, en cualquier lugar: arrodillándose ante un crucifijo, alabando con otros, o en la Santa Comunión cuando Jesús está presente en nuestro interior. En una variedad de formas, el Espíritu Santo nos ayuda a orar. Una forma es en nuestra habitación interior: hablar con nuestro Padre en secreto. "La contemplación es un misterio en el que Dios se revela a nosotros mismos en el centro mismo de nuestro ser más íntimo", escribió Thomas Merton. 40 DAYS TO RAISE THE ROOF We have 11 leaks in our church roof. Consequently, our new organ has not been working, paint is peeling, drops falling on heads, and when it rains, it really pours! The good news is our Finance Council has approved the use of our savings to install a new roof which will cost $150K. In Lent, we are called to sacrifice and there really is no place like home. Both the Finance Council and Pastor’s Advisory Board are encouraging parishioners for a one-time gift to help defray the cost of the roof as part of your Lenten sacrifice. We are asking each individual or family to take an envelope and pray about this offering. Our savings will take a substantial hit; every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a difference! Think about denying yourself something(s) during these holy days and help us Raise the Roof! Envelopes are available in the narthex. My hope and prayer is that we will not need to touch our savings and so I leave this in God’s hands and your good and generous hearts. Will share total Easter Sunday. Fr. Jude Michael
40 DÍAS PARA LEVANTAR EL TECHO Tenemos 11 goteras en el techo de nuestra parroquia. En consecuencia, nuestro nuevo órgano no ha funcionado, la pintura se está pelando, las gotas caen sobre sus cabezas y, cuando llueve, ¡realmente se vierte! Nuestros ahorros recibirán un golpe sustancial; ¡Cada donación, sin importar cuán grande o pequeña sea, hará una diferencia! ¡Piensa en negarte algo a ti mismo durante estos días sagrados y ayúdanos a Levantar el Techo! MISSIONARIES OF THE POOR FOOD DRIVE - LENT 2019 The Missionaries of the Poor are dedicated to "Joyful Service with Christ on the Cross" by serving the poorest of the poor. They desperately need basic food items to feed over 500 people in Jamaica on a daily basis. This year, peanut butter and boxes of spaghetti only (no other types of pasta, please!) Place your peanut butter and spaghetti in our emptied baptismal font, (like we did with our Giving Tree items.) The Way for Women is a 3-day retreat for adult female survivors of abuse offered by the Archdiocese of Atlanta’s Victim Assistance Program. Kaleidoscope Organizational Meeting There will be an organizational meeting on Tuesday, March 12th at 7:00pm in room 14 of the Faith Formation building for all adults interested in helping out with Kaleidoscope this summer. Kaleidoscope is scheduled for the week of June 10th -14th. This is a wonderful summer program for our children and youth volunteers and your help as adults needed. Volunteer to serve our Military Travelers! Our Holy Cross military veterans, Bob Spidel and Jack Horvath, each have volunteer groups which support our valued military and family travelers at the Atlanta Airport USO. Bob’s group serves on Mondays, and Jack’s group serves on Tuesdays, both ladies and gentlemen are welcome. This is done on a planned basis, when each person is available. One does not need to be a veteran at the USO. If you would like to have more information about this wonderful volunteering, please call Bob at 678-225-5349 or Jack at 770-934-0127 .

Amigos For Christ Mission Trip
The Holy Cross 2019 Amigos For Christ mission trip to Nicaragua is scheduled for the week of 6/8/19 – 6/15/19. Holy Cross has been given 20 spots for the week and we will be working with 2 other Atlanta parishes (St. Gabe’s, Holy Trinity) and 2 high schools.
