From Cassie

God Prepares the Way

For surely I know the plans I have for

you, says the LORD, plans for your

welfare and not for harm, to give you a

future with hope. Jeremiah 29:11

I am fortunate to have a small group of

women with whom I covenant to travel on

our journey from seminary to ordination

and beyond. Throughout our relationship,

we have upheld each other in prayer

during times of struggle, exhaustion,

exhilaration, and transition. It is not

uncommon for one of us to receive short

text messages just when we need them

the most as if guided by the hand of God. On Monday this week,

I met with the District Committee on Ministry to be examined for

referral to the conference Board of Ministry, the first of several

steps toward ordination. As expected, I had the appropriate

feeling in the pit of my stomach and a certain amount of doubt

that I was adequately prepared for this meeting. Then my phone

chimed and the text message calmed all my fears. My covenant

sister simply wrote, "May you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit

who has gone before you and prepared the way."

I think that times of transition are sometimes the most difficult

to navigate because of the number of unknowns. We simply are

not created with a special ability to see into our future and know

the things that will transpire or the places we will be. We do not

know what tomorrow will bring. As we prepare for Rev. Rusty

Hedges to come, we can feel that feeling in the pit of our

stomach because we do not know how things will change. I also

think about how Rusty and Betsy must feel, for they must also

leave the place they have called home for the past several years.

navigate. However, God is faithful and God is active in this

transition. God wants goodness for us. God's Spirit was present

in the process of making this appointment and we can have faith

that the Holy Spirit has gone before us and prepared the way.

I was met with kindness and tough questions during my

interview with the district committee. They prayed for me and

with me, they challenged me and applauded me when I

conquered the quest set before me. This is the fruit of God's

faithfulness in my journey and I believe this will be the fruit of

the new journey set before us as the people called Holy

Covenant. Friends, in this transition, may we feel the presence of

the Holy Spirit who has gone before us and prepared the way!

Shalom,

Summer is a great time to kick up your feet

and read a good book! But if you are like

many of us, reading time is a premium and

we almost need a reason to find a quiet

moment to run our eyes over the pages. So

here are two great reasons: 1) LIFT is

sponsoring a book study for women, and 2)

the book is all about Humor and Grace!

In this personal and funny look at humor as a spiritual practice,

and the pulpit in reclaiming the forgotten humor legacy found in

thousands of years of human spiritual history. Cassie Wade and

Susan Blassingame will lead this delightful study.

Christianity is Not a Spectator Sport

Ever thought about being a Stephen

Minister?Stephen Ministers work alongside our

pastors to care, encourage, and provide

emotional and spiritual support to people

who are going through a difficult time such

as divorce, grief, hospitalization,

unemployment, terminal illness, relocation,

chronic illness, or loneliness. If you have

gifts for caring, encouragement, and

listening, please begin to prayerfully consider whether you might

want to be part of this exciting ministry. If you think you might

be interested, talk with one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders:

Debbie Chapman, Susan Rardin, Donna Hatter, or Susan Kasten.

If you need a caring person to walk with you during rough times,

please contact Pastor Debbie Chapman [email protected].

Summer is here,

where did the offerings go?This has been an interesting quarter

for Holy Covenant UMC. We were

notified that there would be a senior

pastor change, funds were collected

for Sack Summer Hunger, funds were

raised for summer mission and choir

trips, money was raised for books for

Davis and Furneaux Elementary children, and the church

continues to have normal operating expenses. We have been

very successful in giving funds for special causes which will help

many people in ways that we will never know. For some reason

our offerings have not kept up with the normal expenses for the

church. As of the end of May our offerings for church operations

were approximately $25,000 less than was budgeted for that

period. June offerings to date are also down from expectations.

The church has adjusted by not spending funds for ministry

projects that were budgeted, payments were not made for

apportionments and funds have been borrowed from special

giving funds.

As we continue into summer our offerings will need to increase

so that we can pay our normal operating expenses and catch up

with expected giving. There are several ways that you can give

to the church when you are not in attendance such as automatic

drafting from your account, paying your contribution on line and

mailing checks to the church. Which ever way you chose to

continue payment of your pledged amount during the summer,

the finance committee will appreciate your contribution. If you

would like more details of the church expenses or expected

giving or just have questions about the finances of the church

feel free to contact your finance committee for answers.

The Finance Committee ask that you prayerfully consider your

giving and continue to support Holy Covenant UMC with funds as

you much as you are able.

Holy Covenant Soccer CampAnother successful soccer camp

was held at Holy Covenant. The

majority of kids were first-time

participants in any Holy

Covenant event, which afforded

many opportunities to invite

participation in upcoming

events. Several of the kids

signed up to attend the

cheerleading and karate camps.

One parent expressed

appreciation for the chance to

have her child participate in a

soccer event to determine if she

might have an interest in

pursuing the sport without having to spend a lot of money.

Special thanks to Pastor Andy and Nathan Lewis, Amber Ramirez

[Cassie Wade's daughter], and Stacey Congrove. Also, big thank

you goes to Linda Hill, Rick Davis, Della Swaim, and Johnny

Swaim for their help with the camp.

When you receive this newsletter 23 teenagers and 8 adults will

have returned from their trip to Colorado and Kansas. We will

have performed at FUMC Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods,

the Air Force Academy Chapel and assisted living centers. To see

the beautiful mountains and sing "How Great Thou Art" will be a

memory that will last a lifetime. To stand in the USAF Chapel and

sing "Creation Will Be at Peace" will be a prayer that will

reasonate for years to come. The Bon Voyage Concert was a

smashing success as the youth performed very well in their

singing, ringing and instrument playing. Grant Dermody was

awesome as our accompanist. Randy Lasley (auctioneer) and Joy

Lasley (auction coordinator) did an awesomefantastic job with

our Dessert Auction and we brought in well over a $1,000 for our

choir tour fund. Over the past year, parents, youth, church

members and friends have supported us by their participation in

our fundraisers both by participating and donating. I started to

list them all here but am afraid I would miss someone so let this

THANKS be for all of you. I do want to thank Susie Shatzsall,

Sheli Erenberger, Melissa Marsh, Teresa Oostenbrug, Andrea

Millaway, Jim McKee and Jerry Baxter for committing to plan and

participate in the trip. There are really no words to describe

their dedication to the program and our young people.

Blessings to all,

Pastor Debbie
