FROM THE PASTOR IS THE PRAYER OF THE ROSARY OUTDATED?

I came across the following story which I think is worthy to consider as we enter into this month of October, traditionally known as the month of the Rosary. “More than a century ago, a proud university student boarded a train in France and sat next to an older man who seemed to be a peasant of comfortable means. The brash student noticed that the older gentleman was slipping beads through his fingers. He was praying the Rosary. "Sir, do you still believe in such outdated things?" the student inquired. "Yes, I do. Don't you?" the man responded. The student laughed and admitted, "I do not believe in such silly things. Take my advice. Throw that rosary out the window and learn what science has to say about it." "Science? I do not understand this science. Perhaps you can explain it to me," the man said humbly, tears welling in his eyes. The university Student noticed that the man was deeply moved. To avoid hurting the older person's feelings, he said, "Please give me your address and I will send you some literature to explain the matter to you." The man fumbled in the inside pocket of his coat and pulled out his business card. On reading the card, the student lowered his head in shame and was speechless. The card read: "Luis Pasteur, Director of the Institute of Scientific Research, Paris." The deluded student had encountered his country's leading chemist and bacteriologist, and a scientist of worldwide renown. Some people have a belief that the Rosary is for Religious, Old ladies and funerals! The Rosary is arguably the most recognizable Catholic devotion. Sadly, it is a devotion that has fallen out of fashion for many Catholics. This is deeply unfortunate, yet the Rosary is one of the most powerful weapons in our resource for spiritual warfare and one of the greatest aids in the pursuit of a fruitful spiritual life. Among the most common excuses for failing to pray the Rosary one hears are that it’s “boring” or that it takes too much time. What many Catholics aren’t aware of, however, are the benefits – promises from Our Lady herself – associated with its faithful recitation. Many have become saints because they prayed the rosary. The Popes and Bishops our leaders in faith have prayed the rosary why? As one a Redemptorist priest by the name of Father John Hamrogue put it:” The rosary is clearly something to hold on to, literally hold on to, like a rope in the ocean. In grave illness or death, it will be enough just to clutch the rosary or wordlessly rub the beads.” There are times in my own life when, feeling somewhat “low” before falling asleep, I hold my rosary without attempting to recite it, in order to make contact with the higher power. How about you? To be continued……..

27TH.SUNDAY SNAPSHOT. JOHN: IT CAN BE HARD TO HAVE FAITH. RIGHT? MARY: I GUESS SO. SOMETIMES I FEEL MY FAITH ISN’T AS STRONG AS IT SHOULD BE. JOHN: THE LORD TELLS THE PROPHET TO WAIT, TO HAVE FAITH. MARY: AND THE DISCIPLES ASKED JESUS TO INCREASE THEIR FAITH. JOHN: IT REMAINS OUR JOB TO HAVE FAITH, TO TRUST IN GOD AND TO DO WHAT WE KNOW, WE MUST PUT FAITH INTO ACTION. MARY: I PRAY THAT THE SPIRIT OF POWER AND LOVE STRENGTHEN OUR FAITH IN FACE OF TRIALS.
