M a s s e s T h i s W e e k +Pax+ Dear Parishioners and Friends of Holy Angels,
This first week of August, that traditionally begins the
“Dog Days” of summer, proves to be one of exception for our
parish. First of all, at weekend liturgies, we celebrate the
beautiful Feast of Jesus’ Mother known as “Our Lady, Queen of the Holy Angels.” It commemorates one of the Blessed
Virgin Mary’s roles in heaven and celebrates the tiny chapel
in the valley below the town of Assisi of which St. Francis
received ownership from the good Benedictines and which he
restored—the chapel after which our adoration chapel bear-
ing the same name is modeled and consecrated. Every parish church that is dedicated to saints or has feasts to which it is
attached can celebrate those saints and feasts on the Sunday
closest to the feast day—at least in liturgical Ordinary Time.
The feast day actually falls on August 2, and dates back to
the time of St. Francis of Assisi.
Later this week, the Archdiocese uses our parish church
this Wednesday for a special Mass celebrated by Archbishop
Naumann that the Serra Clubs (Prayer and Action Clubs
throughout our Archdiocese that are named after St. Junipero
Serra for supporting vocations to the priesthood and religious
life) sponsor annually to show their support for our seminari-ans and their parents. The Director of Vocations and the
Director of Seminarians are involved in this. This year, the
Mass comes at the end of a “staygrimage” that the seminarians
experience in the home archdiocese.
The Mass will be celebrated on the Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica in Rome of the greatest and most
ancient Marian church in the Eternal City, also known as the
Feast of Our Lady of Snows. (There is a shrine in Belleville,
IL. of Our Lady of the Snows.) The legend is that the pope one
night dreamt that snow fell on the one of the fabled “seven
hills of Rome,” the Esquiline Hill and Our Lady directed him to build a church in her honor where it fell. He woke to find it
did snow, exactly where in his dream, and that of some
wealthy benefactors as well, the Blessed Mother wanted the
church built. It is the primary church to Mary in Rome and
hence because of that called St. Mary Major.
St. Mary Major is especially noted for the grand icon believed to have been “written” by St. Luke, known as “Salus
Populi Romani,” (Salvation of the Roman People). Just like
the icon we had at the end of June stationed on an easel in
recognition of the Feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, so,
too, on August 5, the Archbishop and seminarians celebrate the Salvation of the Roman [Catholic Church] People, Who is,
as always, Jesus: He Who is held in His Mother’s arms, Who
is Perpetual Help and Salvation Itself.
What people suffering from the heat wouldn’t give for a
miraculous snowfall, right? But much more so, what people
throughout the world wouldn’t give for an end to the pandem-
ic. We are through seven months of the calendar year and
into the eight month with the pandemic still with us. I take
exception with the idea that we have to live with a “new
normal” ever after this pandemic. The Spanish Flu severely
(Continued next Column)
decreased the world population in several years start-
ing at the end of the “War to End All Wars.” I know
that our Mayor Emerita could easily wax eloquent on
how other than the memory of it and the sad lingering
health effects of persons who bore the illness but
survived, there was no “new normal” in the aftermath
of the Spanish Flu once it had subsided. Things over
time simply went back to normal. Of this we are as
one throughout our planet: all peoples, from parish-
ioners, such as our beloved 102 year-old Anna Mary
—weathering her second pandemic, having made it
safely through the Spanish Flu, at her birth and
infancy—to the youngest child, all want to live
normally again. We pray that will happen sooner
rather than later.
I hope that if you were not able to take advantage
in person of our July Summer Series we hosted that
you will go to our website to view and hear three of these great presentations that will remain on our
website for some time: St. Thomas Becket, A Case for Honest Thinking, and Canon Law and Why We Should Love It.
Blessings, grace, peace and joy to all in Christ, the
Salvation of all Peoples, through His Mother, the
Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady, Queen of the Angels and of all God’s People.
Holy Mother, Draw Souls to Jesus
In celebrating this month of Our Lady’s final
journey to God in her glorious Assumption, let us ask
her motherly intercession to draw souls to the Sacred
Heart of her Son and His Church.
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a journey, too – a journey of faith and of conversion
to God and what He intends for us. RCIA is the
process through which persons who were never bap-
tized, and persons who were baptized in another
Christian tradition, become members of the Church,
a people on pilgrimage to our Heavenly Father.

quiring about what Catholics believe, please contact

If you’re already enjoying the blessings of the sac-ramental life of the Church, please share your joy
and your story of God’s love with others – and please
pray daily for those whom God is calling to the
Church. August 2, 2020 • Feast of Our Lady, Queen of the Holy Angels | 3
Elections for the two seats on the Pastoral Council will be held in August. We are presently working on a way to do an online voting process. The
following parishioners are running for the two seats.
Greg Beck: Many of you know me as "Judy's husband" but others know me from Knights, the choir, men's prayer/bible study groups, Leavenworth Kansans for Life or from the Leavenworth Catholic school board. I was born and raised Cath-olic, the oldest of 12 kids, and had a full career in the Army as an aviation officer and then as an instructor; and reached
grandfather stage 5 years ago. Many of you would probably indicate that I'm rarely bashful about asking questions, raising issues, and letting people know what I think. Seems like continued interaction with you all, listening to what you say and then respectfully (and hopefully tactfully) conveying that at meetings with Father would be important. May
God's mercy and blessings be on us all.
Ruth Gore and her husband Chris have been members of Holy Angels for over 20 years. They have raised their four children, Keegan, Carly, Dean and Adell, in this par-ish. During this time, Ruth has served as a EMHC, Religious Ed teacher and helped with summer bible school. Ruth grew up in Topeka, earned her degree at Mary-mount College of Kansas, and moved to the Kansas City area to begin her teaching ca-
reer. She married Chris and they moved to the Basehor ar-ea in 1997. She currently teaches math at Basehor-Linwood Middle School.
My name is Jenny Alden, and I would like to be your representative on the parish counsel. I joined Holy Angels 8 ½ years ago when Bob and I moved from Tonganoxie to Bonner Springs. I have 2 children, 3 grand children, and 7 great grandchildren. My life has been enriched by being involved in this parish as a sacristan, greeter, and a member of CWO. Even if you don't vote for me, VOTE.
Thomas E. Johnson and his wife, Janet, have been a member of Holy Angels Parish since 2007. He is a Past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 3146 and Faithful Navigator for the 4th Degree Assembly 3629. Colonel
(retired) Johnson spent 40 years in the Army, 18 years as a traditional guards-men and 22 years active duty. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Management from Bellevue University. He is currently
employed by MBO Partners as a Military Analyst. “I’ve been blessed to serve as a Lector and Communion Minister and when called upon, will take the Holy Eucharist to parishion-
ers who are too ill to attend Mass. I want nothing more
than to see the parish grow with dedicated volunteers and caring parishioners. I am proud to say that I’m an avid supporter of the Adoration Chapel.”

All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men
to do nothing. Vote this Tuesday. Vote Pro-Life.
The 2020 Primary Election & the “Value
Them Both” Amendment Voting has begun for many primary elections in Kansas. As Catholics,
we are called not simply to vote, but to be well
informed voters who in casting our ballots apply
the moral principles and priorities of our Faith.
The Catholic Bishops have once again identified the protection of the unborn as the pre-eminent
moral priority. Archbishop Naumann states,
“The Value Them Both Constitutional Amend-
ment needs to be adopted by the citizens of Kan-
sas. We need elected officials who will take ac-
tion to defend the innocent life of the unborn and their mothers.” To see Archbishop’s full
statement and to learn more about the “Value
Them Both” Amendment, please visit

CWO FOOD DRIVE: CWO is collecting items for BLAS next weekend, August 8/9.
Suggested items that are needed:
non-perishable food staples, espe-
cially canned soups, stews, chili or
canned meats. Cash donations
will also be accepted. BLAS could
also use donations of school supplies. Please
drop your items off before or after Mass or until
August 11 at the parish hall. Thank you for your
support.
I would like to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to Fr. McDonald, the parish staff, and the families and good people of Holy
Angels for the many kindnesses that you extend-
ed to me during my assignment with all of you
this summer. It truly has been my honor, joy,
and great privilege to pray for, to walk with, and
to serve all of you alongside Fr. McDonald during these summer months. From the many prayers
that you have said for me, the kindnesses you
have extended to me, the meals you have shared
with me, and the ways that you made me feel
welcome in this beautiful parish family, thank you.
This parish community is clearly a family of fami-
lies who know Jesus and desire to love Him and
follow Him with their lives. Your love for the Lord,
for His Church, and for His priests has inspired me all summer long, and I am profoundly grate-
ful to have been able to meet and to serve all of
you. I would be remiss if I did not thank Fr.
McDonald for his generous and hospitable
welcome as well as for his leadership and kind-
ness to me this summer. I’m not entirely sure he knew just what he would be taking on when he
said “yes” to receiving Dcn. Luke for a summer
assignment, but I am most grateful that he did!
I have learned much from his example as well as
from the heroic men and women who staff this beautiful parish.
As I prepare to depart from Basehor and to
return to Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis
for my final year of formation and preparation for
the priesthood, I humbly ask for your continued prayers. I certainly believe that the quality of
men that I am blessed to be in the seminary with
is in direct proportion to the prayers of God’s
faithful people for good and holy priests. Please
do not stop praying for me and for all of the men
from our Archdiocese who are discerning and preparing to share in Christ’s priesthood. Seek-
ing to respond to this invitation from Jesus is the
most life-giving and fulfilling thing I have ever
done in my life. I am confident that there are
young men and women in this parish family who are also being invited to follow Jesus with their
lives, and to bet everything on the truth of the
Gospel, and I ask you to pray for them as you
pray for me!
God-willing, I will be ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese in May of this next year, and
I hope to return to Holy Angels as an ordained
priest to offer a Mass of Thanksgiving with all of
you. Until then, we will be united in faith, in
hope, in love, and in the Eucharist!
Gratefully in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary,
-Dcn. Luke Doyle
