Holme Head Bay and its waterfall is a secluded area off of the river Caldew, with its pebbled areas and
clear fresh running water, it creates a calm and relaxing area to walk the dog or to sit and soak up the
sun. It was because of its contrast with water and foliage to why it was chosen location to relm. It was found as we were exploring our surroundings and it was because of the man-made waterfall and calm
crystal clear water crashing through the rock pools to why we chose to delve deep into its treasures.
The Ferguson Brothers moved to the site in the
1820’s but it is thought to date back to the 1800s
The Bay was built in 1864 to regulate the flow of water into the mill-race as a source
of power
The mill was part of the textile industry but closed in 1991 and has
since been converted into homes
A fish-ladder has been built in the wier to enable salmon to return to thier breeding
grounds
By the middle of the 19th Century, the river Caldew helped make Carlisle the
fourth most important textile producing areas in
the country
The salmon travelling back to thier breeding grounds can often be seen between
October to December, especailly after heavy rain
“Being here gives me a sense of calm. It is a place where I can visit if I’m feeling stressed or anxious and I know it will calm me. My head is clear of all my worries and for these few mintues, I feel like nothing can get me.”
