A Note from Charlie Regan - DSS HOA Board President A Dynamic Neighborhood There is much activity in the Derwood Station South HOA this spring and summer as we come out of a looong winter season! As we say good-bye to several long-time homeowners who have decided to move on, please make an effort to welcome the new families moving in. With our ideal location surrounded by protected green spaces and feeding into one of the best school clusters in the state, our neighborhood is one of the most sought-after in the area. The diversity of our residents add to the rich experience of living where we do. To point out a few highlights from the HOA:

• AERC – While the task of the committee is to maintain a certain standard to maintain home values, we also do not want to remain “stuck in time” from when the houses were built 30 years ago. The AERC has been looking carefully at new property improvements and open to working with owners to keep the neighborhood from feeling dated. See the article in this newsletter which highlights a few examples.

• Sidewalk improvement – the HOA is responsible for the sidewalks in front of the townhouses. The cold winter forced tremendous swelling under the sidewalks causing much cracking and shifting. We have initiated a plan to address the trouble areas and negotiated a deeply discounted rate for any of the townhouse owners who wish to upgrade or repair their own stoops at the same time.

• Landscaping – The HOA contracted with Brinkman to clean up several of the overgrown

areas and trim vines and trees in the common areas at the entrance to the neighborhood and along the fence line facing FexEx. We are restricted from doing much in some of the “wild” areas, but continue to clean up where we can.

• Social Calendar – We had a fantastic turnout at the Wine & Cheese social in January!

Thank you to everyone who attended. The next event is an ice cream picnic at the Tot Lot Saturday, 6/20 (6/21 rain date). This is a great time to enjoy the weather, eat free food and desserts, and meet your neighbors.

I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing summer! Sincerely,

Charlie Regan 15532 Grinnell Terrace [email protected]

Thank you for picking up after your dog. Everyone appreciates it.

Some Notes from the Board

If you live along Indianola, please be considerate to your neighbors and trim back your plantings that are overgrowing the sidewalk.

Please be considerate to the mailman and trim the bushes around your mailbox.

HOA Board elections are coming up on June 1at 7:30pm. Please consider running for the board. As of today there are 2 open slots on the board. We need your help. Very

little of your time is necessary and it is a chance to make a difference in your neighborhood. At most there is one board meeting per month. If you are interested in serving please send a note to [email protected] or write-in your name on the

ballot or come to the election meeting.

Thank you.

Communications Update

Your Community Bulletin Board

At a recent board meeting a neighbor asked if people could send recommendations for service providers to the newsletter. He was informed that since the Board can’t give recommendations for vendors, it was decided that service provider information could not be printed in the newsletter. Would you like to tell neighbors about a service you provide? Do you want to know about service providers that neighbors have used? Go to Hollybrooke.wordpress.com to post comments on issues, post recommendations on service providers or services, post lost and found notices, and post items for sale.

Goodbye and Thank you! The Board and the AERC want to wish a fond farewell to Clancy and Marianne Mann who have moved to a retirement community in Mitchelville, MD. Clancy and Marianne were original owners. They were involved in our community from the very beginning. Marianne served on the board and the AERC. She was also the AERC chair. You have helped make Hollybrooke the neighborhood it is today. We wish you only good times, good luck and good health in the future.

Have you heard about Alert Montgomery? Alert Montgomery is a free software application used to send emergency alerts, notifications and updates to electronic devices including: cell phones, pagers, smart phones, e-mail accounts. In the event of an emergency, natural or man made, the county will be able to send important alerts and updates directly to county residents if they choose to create an Alert Montgomery account.

For more information or to sign up, go to: www.alert. montgomerycountymd.gov

It’s been a board policy not to accept advertising in the newsletter, however the board feels that this is a worthwhile cause. Xavier lived on Indianola Dr.

Please read this follow-up letter from Xavier’s father Audie. Thank you.

I first wish to express my sincerest and deepest appreciation to so many from our neighborhood for the thoughtful support you have given to the non-profit charity established in my son's name - The XA Project. Thank you. I wanted to give you an update on The XA Project (also see www.TheXAProject.org). The kick-off events for The XA Project in January 2015 were heart-warming and wonderful. On January 9, 2015, The XA Project hosted a concert at Children's National Medical Center (Washington, DC) that was broadcast throughout the hospital. Alli Mauzey (Broadway actress, "Wicked" the musical), Sharon Clark (jazz vocalist), and a duet from the National Symphony Orchestra performed in honor of Xavier. On January 10, 2015, performances were held at the American Dance Institute (Rockville, MD) to celebrate Xavier's amazing life and spirit, and to kick-off The XA Project. Performers included Jonathan Jordan (dancer, The Washington Ballet), Morgann Rose (ballerina, The Washington Ballet), Ballet ADI, Glenn Sales (concert pianist), Dana Morgan (concert pianist), Olivia Sun (World Martial Arts gold medalist) Alli Mauzey (Broadway actress, "Wicked" the musical), and Eden Espinosa (Broadway actress, "Wicked" the musical). The evening was simply magical and a wonderful tribute to Xavier. Since January 2015, The XA Project has been partnering with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Children's National Medical Center to bring the power of the Arts to sick kids and their families. We have given 78 tickets to Kennedy Center performances so far to those from Children's National Medical Center, and we brought 3 dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre to Children's Hospital to do a dance workshop in the psychiatric unit of Children's National Medical Center. The XA Project will also start taking sick kids and their families from the Children's Inn at NIH to the Strathmore Music Center (the first concert: BSO - A Tribute to John Williams; May 28). In addition, The XA Project will be bringing pediatric patients/families to The Washington Ballet's performance of "Alice in Wonderland" at the Kennedy Center on May 16, 2015. We hope to continue to expand our charitable activities in the next coming years. It is our dream to bring the joy and wonder of the performing arts to ALL pediatric patients and families. We are dedicated to creating smiles and enduring memories for children and families who are going through so much in dealing with serious medical challenges. We hope to offer them some relief from the burden of their illnesses, inspiration, and moments of happiness. Lemon smiles and pirouettes, Audie Atienza

It is the Committee’s job to facilitate the homeowners’ plans, while being mindful of maintaining the standards set out in the Homeowner’s Covenants which help give our community a unified and appealing appearance. Notes on Submitting an AERC Application Please review the AERC Guidelines on the Hollybrooke web site (http://www.hollybrooke.org) before submitting an application. It is very important that all aspects of the project are outlined. This includes design drawings, color samples, location, and relevant brochures. The application MUST be typed or printed. Please submit your application WELL before you want to begin the project. There are six members of the Committee and it requires some time for all of them to review your application. It is not necessary to call MTM or AERC members to check on your application. Applications are normally turned around in 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. Many Thanks to Bob Tremmel Bob Tremmel recently resigned from the AERC after many years of service. Bob's wise council and long experience have been invaluable in providing continuity and structure during the approval process. We wish him well in his future endeavors as he will be greatly missed. There's Room For Innovation We live in a beautiful colonial style neighborhood, with a mature tree canopy and well tended homes. Part of the responsibility of your AERC is to help to maintain our enviable environment. Colonial architecture and style encompass a large vocabulary. Here are some photos of homes in our neighborhood that have great style, without duplicating the original designs of the builder. The porches at 7204 and 7236 Grinnell Drive, are perfect examples of innovation while maintaining the colonial vocabulary. Another example is the home at 7239 Grinnell Drive. This is the first use in our neighborhood of shingle style siding, in this case in the gable ends. Also, the use of enhanced moldings and keystones at the garage doors. In conclusion, there is room in the colonial vocabulary and our neighborhood for individual expression. Tom Seiler Chair, AERC

Summer Clean Up

Lots of things happen to our homes during the winter and now that warmer weather is here, it is a good time to clean up and fix up our yards, gardens and houses. Usually a list is made of things to do, and the easy ones on the list are done first. The others take a little longer. Sometimes we are a little slow getting outside to do the things that need to be done. Our neighbors notice this. In fact, it is easier to see what is wrong with a neighbor’s home than our own home.

To help the neighborhood and you get ready for summer, the AERC will walk the neighborhood and look for major things that should be on a Summer Clean Up list. Here are some of the things they will look for:

• Driveway – bulges from tree roots, grass growing in cracks, crumbling sections • Trees – dead limbs, torn off or broken limbs, dead trees • Bushes – overgrown, broken off sections, dead bushes, bushes blocking windows • House – mildew, missing or broken siding/shutters/shingles, erosion of the front step • Fences – missing or broken posts or rails • Landscaping – broken outdoor items, soil erosion, lawn with large bare spots • Garage – doors with peeling paint, or rotting wood

Below is the form the AERC will use. If they see something at your home, they will note it and the note will be mailed to you. They do this to help you along with your Summer Clean Up. It is important that you know what your neighbor sees when they look at your home. If you get a note from the AERC, add the item to your Summer Clean Up list.
