Holiday Party Sponsored by Claverianos
December 6, 2014
Every year, during the holiday season, the Claverianos
extend their generosity through their annual Holiday
Luncheon for the World War II Veterans and their families. This event is filled
with delicious food, fun games, gifts, and more importantly, it serves as a re-
minder of what matters most during this season: family ties. This familial air fills
the venue and radiates the place with joy and laughter. (continued page 2)

in celebrating the holidays.
Intergenerational Gift Exchange December 9 & 17, 2014
The holidays are known as a time of giving, and the youth of the United Playaz (U.P.) came together once more to share their holiday cheer with the seniors of our South of Market community.
This exchange is unlike any other, for the students interview the seniors prior to the gift giving, in order to share more than just presents; they share their stories as well.
The final meeting was celebrated through karaoke and gift-giving. The merriment was enjoyed by all, and special thanks goes to United Playaz for their gener-osity and thoughtfulness in making sure that our el-
ders are taken care of, especially during this holiday season.
Parol Lantern Festival December 13, 2014
The beautiful parols illuminating the 12th Annual Parol Lantern Festival came as a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication of participating community members. We, at the Veterans Equity Center, can attest that the seniors creating parols for our contingent dis-played utmost dedication and creativity. The theme for this year’s festival was “Community Legacy-Pamana sa Komunidad”, and our contingent viewed VEC’s legacy as family. This was rep-resented through the parols decorated by individual pet-als in the color of the Philippine flag. In the words of our volunteer, Francis Reyes: The petals represent the lega-cy of the community leaders [Bullet X, Bill Sorro, and Al Robles] that have created spaces to cultivate personal and familial change, resilience, and agency. Petals, like community leaders, come from a place of nourishment. Like water to seeds, community leaders became a cata-lyst for growth branching into struggling neighborhoods, evicted tenants, and silenced voices with the vision to blossom like the rose that grew from the concrete. Alt-hough these petals are now ever-floating in the wind they have left behind not only a legacy but roots that continue to grow the community. His words encompass the contri-butions of leaders that have helped cultivate this sense of community which continues to create the family we hold dear to our hearts. This year’s contingent place third place during the Tala Awards; Galing Bata came in second place, and Canon Kip Senior Center placed first. We congratulate all of the community members that were a part of this event, and give special thanks to our volunteers and seniors that helped make this year a success!
Pasko sa SoMa 2014 December 19, 2014
Pasko sa SoMa is a yearly
gathering of the South of
Market community during the
holiday season. The Galing
Bata Bilingual Program hosts
this annual event as an effort to help raise funds for the
typhoon in the Philippines. VEC seniors showed support
by entertaining the crowd with holiday songs.
Do you like to volunteer?
Our program is anticipating new developments coming up by early next year from Mayor’s Office on Housing and Community De-
velopment. Because of this, we will need volunteers who can assist in filling-up applications for Below Market Program housing
applications. We will train volunteers in filling-up the applications and inform them about BMR requirements and qualifications.
Bi-lingual is definitely a plus: Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Hindi, Arabic, Tagalog. But if you're only speaking English, you're still
welcome to volunteer! If you're a student and needs a class credit, you're more than welcome to volunteer! Schedule is flexible and
we’ll work around your time!
We are hoping that volunteers can also be contacted every time a new development comes out!
If you're interested please contact:
