Ag Transportation: Connecting Supply with DemandWhy is Nebraska and U.S. agriculture an international enterprise vs. a local, parochial business? Abundant supply and international demand are essential, but it is also critical to connect supply with demand. Our nation’s multimodal transportation system of roads, bridges, railroads, inland waterways, and ports provides this connection. To ensure future profitability, farmers must understand and be engaged in promoting a cost-effective, reliable transportation system.

Mike Steenhoek is executive director of the Soy Transportation Coalition, an initiative established in 2007 and comprised of the United Soybean Board, the American Soybean Association, and thirteen state soybean boards. The Soy Transportation Coalition exists to promote a cost effective, reliable, and competitive transportation system that serves the agriculture industry. As executive director of the STC, Mike’s responsibilities include communicating the initiative and the importance of transportation issues to soybean growers and

processors; establishing and executing the organization’s strategic direction; and building collaborations with other effected industries. Mike is a member of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Advisory Committee on Supply Chain Competitiveness and the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Freight Advisory Council. Impacts of the Revised Arc Flash Calculation Standard on Your Facility’s Safety ProgramThe industry standard is to have your facility arc flash study updated every five years. Newly released revisions to the industry arc flash calculation standard make it so that you can’t just dust off your old arc flash report and verify that it’s still good. The revised industry standards have gotten considerably more complex and have introduced additional field investigative requirements and calculation parameters into the arc flash computations. This informative presentation will walk you through why it’s beneficial to implement the new standard in your next arc flash study and what your engineers will need to focus on in order to properly perform your next arc flash study.

Reliability Centered Maintenance Reliability Centered Maintenance, baling wire and the Great Depression are all rooted on the basic premise of holding things together and making things last. Each topic builds on the idea that longest possible life brings the highest return on investment for greatest profitability. The session discusses precision installation, vibration and bearing life, alignment and equipment life, heat-flow analysis and resistant heating, and the total effect on the bottom line: How much will I be saving when predictive technologies and reliability-centered maintenance practices are employed?

Ed LaPrenze joined Pepper Maintenance in 2002 as a field technician and is currently the director of sales and marketing for North America. Prior to Pepper Maintenance, Ed was the lead man in Murphy Family Farms’ Nevada, Missouri, feed mill for 10 years. While there, he was responsible for the daily operation, automation and electrical systems at the mill. Ed has obtained certifications as a Level 2 Thermographer, Category 2 Vibration Analyst, Precision Alignment/Field Balancing Analyst and Certified Maintenance and Reliability Technician. U.S. and Japan Economic RelationshipThe United States and Japan are large trading partners, but maybe more important, and what we want to focus on, is how close Nebraska’s ties with Japan are. According to the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, Nebraska has 31 businesses owned, or partially owned, by Japanese companies. More than 120 Nebraska companies are actively involved in trade with Japan, including grain handling and storage equipment companies. Japan is Nebraska’s third

largest trade partner. In 2004, Nebraska exported $2.3 billion of merchandise, of which $193 million went to Japan. The session will cover who JETRO is, what role they play in developing our trade relationships with Japan, how current political and economic issues are impacting trade, and what the future holds for Midwest and Japan investments.

Ralph Inforzato has served as executive director for business development at JETRO Chicago since 2015. In this position, he worked to implement JETRO’s team-based projects to directly engage in assisting US business expansion to Japan. He initiated inbound and outbound technology collaboration for U.S. and Japanese small and medium-sized companies, which has resulted in numerous business agreements. He also sustained the relationships that JETRO Chicago has with business, state

government, and university leaders. For the last 33 years at JETRO Chicago, Inforzato has been involved in significant JETRO-related business development projects, including the Japan—U.S. Biotechnology Initiative (2002-2010), which has sent more than 500 representatives from North American life sciences companies, universities, and research institutes to Japan, enabling them to initiate research collaboration and business development in the Japanese biotechnology and pharmaceutical communities. In addition, he was directly involved in the teams that implemented JETRO’s Japan service robotics business development projects and JETRO’s Monozukuri program, a series of seminars focused on Japanese manufacturing philosophies for engineers in North American technology companies. Joining Inforzato is Tsubasa Hasimoto, also of JETRO. JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) is a non-profit organization funded by the Japanese government for the purpose of supporting trade, investment and business expansion into Japan, as well as supporting Japanese companies looking to enter foreign markets. JETRO has 74 offices in 55 countries worldwide, with six locations in the U.S.: Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. JETRO Chicago serves 12 states within the Midwest Region: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Contact Kelly Jo Highland, Assistant Director, JETRO Chicago, at [email protected] or 312-833-6022.

Donate to the NEGFA Educational FoundationWith these designated funds, NEGFA will be hosting grain engulfment training at Nebraska State FFA Convention April 1-3 for FFA students and their advisors to learn about the importance of grain safety. They will get the opportunity to work together as a team with this hands on training experience which they can take back to their communities and spread the message of grain safety. Maybe they will utilize this information in a future career. Learn more about this work at www.negfa.org/foundation.
