Pakistan Resolution
In March 1940, the annual historic session of All India Muslim League was held
in Minto Park Lahore. Just on the spot where now Minar-e-Pakistan stands, a
historic resolution was passed. The resolution was proposed by Maulvi A.K. Fazle-
e-Haq of Bengal. Im this resolution the Muslims of the subcontinent demanded a
separate homeland for themselves. This historical resolution is known as Pakistan
Resolution.
On 3rd June 1947, the British Government announced that the subcontinent would
be divided into two independent states by 15th August, 1947. In order to execute
the plan, the British Government sent Lord Mountbatten with wide powers as the
Viceroy of the subcontinent. He appointed a Commission headed by
Sir Radcliff to give final shape to the division and demarcation of the borders in
Punjab, Bengal and Assam. The decision of this Commission is known as Radcliff
Award.
On 14th August 1947, Pakistan emerged on the globe as the largest Islamic state in
the world. Quaid-i- Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah took an oath as the first
Governor General of the new Islamic state. Liaqat Ali Khan was appointed as the
First Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Location of Pakistan
Pakistan comprises the western and north western parts of South asia. Islamabad is
the capital of Pakistan. The eastern border of Pakistan touches Bharati Punjab . To
the south-east of Pakistan lies rajasthan, an Indian province. To the north-east of
Pakistan lies the state of Jammu and Kashmir. To the west of Pakistan are the
countries of Afghanistan and Iran. To the south of Pakistan stretches the Arabian
Sea.
Pakistan is situated from 24’ to 36.65’ latitude north and from 61’ to
75.05’ longitude east.
Importance of Pakistan in South Asia
Geographically Pakistan holds a very important position in South Asia region. In
the north of Pakistan run west-east the ranges of lofty
Karakorum mountains touching the south western border of China.
A metalled road, Shahrai-i-Raisham, built through the rocks across the ranges of
Karakorum serves as an agent to strengthened the bonds of friendship and promote
trade relations between two countries.
To the north of Pakistan there are a number of Muslim states which have recently
won independence from the Soviet Union. Pakistan has very cordial relations with
these countries.
To the west it has border with Afghanistan and Iran. Afghanistan is a mountainous
country with few metalled roads and no railway station nor sea port. The sea trade
is therefore carried out through Karachi, a famous seaport of Pakistan. With Iran,
too it has century old good relations.
To the west of Iran there is a chain of oil producing Islamic countries known as
Middle East. To the south-east of South Asia there are also a number of Muslim
countries including Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. These countries are separated
from Pakistan by India which touches the eastern border of Pakistan. Since
Pakistan is located nearly middle of Islamic counties it occupies a very important
position on the globe.
Population of Pakistan
The population of Pakistan is 160 million (16 crore). According to population,
Pakistan is the 9th largest country in the world. About 33% of its population lives in
cities and the rest 66% lives in rural areas. The distructs of Karachi, Lahore,
Faisalabad, Sargodha, Peshawar and Mardan are densely populated. Other districts
of dense population are the long settled sub montane districts of Sialkot and Gujrat.
The most thinly populated areas of Pakistan are the northern mountainous areas
and western hill tracts, the Balochistan Plateau, Cholistan and Lower Sindh
deserts.
