2 — Holiday Happenings Star Beacon, Friday, November 7, 2014

He had a broad face and a little round bellythat shook when he laughed like a bowl fullof jelly. He was chubby and plump, a rightjolly old elf. And Ilaughed when I saw himin spite of myself. - “A Visit From St.Nicholas”Christmas just wouldn’t be the same with-out Santa Claus. Santa will forever beingrained in the holiday season, serving asan endearing symbol of the season regard-less of your religious affiliation. Parents typically go to great lengths toensure their children enjoy the holiday sea-son. By keeping the magic of Santa alive, parents can add a special touch to the holi-day season for their youngsters. Childrenmay become more skeptical of Santaaround the time they turn 10, but there areplenty of ways to encourage this spirit tolive on year after year.* Read an uplifting story. The holidays areripe with stories that tug at the heartstrings.Parents can take their children to the libraryand rent a Christmas tale or take home a

book of holiday stories, reading a differentone before bed each night. Encourage chil-dren to write their own positive stories ofwhat the holidays mean to them and readthem aloud to family and friends. The book“101 Ways to Keep the Spirit of SantaAlive: For “Kids” From 1 to 92” by JohnHagerman is a great way to get everyone inthe house enthusiastic about Santa.* Keep the magic flowing. Children whobelieve in Santa for an extra year or twooften come from families that keep themagic of Santa alive. In addition to the stan-dard traditions of leaving cookies and milkout for the jolly old man, come up with newways to evoke the essence of Santa. Spraypeppermint air freshener around the treeand other places Santa is sure to visit. Use alarge boot to make a footprint in a plushrug. Find a way to trigger noise on the roofto give kids the impression that Mr. Claushimself has arrived. Extra measures to keepSanta alive can help everyone enjoy the hol-iday that much more.

* Take advantage of opportunities to spendtime with Santa. Parents and children alikehave many opportunities to spend time withSanta during the holiday season, includingphoto opportunities at the mall and person-alized videos sent directly to youngsters’email accounts. Elf dolls and breakfast withSanta at a nearby restaurant are other oppor-tunities to spread the magic. Make the mostof these opportunities over the course of theholiday season.* Spread some Christmas cheer. Santa’s jobis to bring presents to the world’s children.Channel the notion that giving is better thanreceiving and spend time giving back toothers as a family. Schedule a day when youcan distribute gifts at a senior center orarrange to bring gifts to a foster child. Bakecookies and deliver cellophane-wrappeddishes to all of your neighbors. These activ-ities put the emphasis on giving.Keeping the tradition of Santa Claus alivecan help adults and children alike enjoy amore festive holiday season.

1 FREE LESSON DRUM, GUITAR OR BASSMention this ad when you call. Expires 12-31-2014

Wreaths are synonymous with the holiday season, and they canrange from intricate to simple to flashy to rustic. Creating festivewreaths does not necessarily require a lot of skill, and wreaths canbe fashioned from a variety of different materials.

The first step to crafting wreaths is to gather the foundation pieces. This usually involves a sturdy material that will serve as thewreath round. It can be vine, foam, branches, or even wire. You’llalso need decorative items that fit the theme of your wreath. Thesemay be berries, ornaments, ribbons, bows, and other trinkets thatwill be attached to the wreath. Florist wire and tape can be used toattach the ornaments to the wreath.

“Say cheese” wreath

Purchase a premade evergreen wreath or wrap boughs of pinearound a wreath frame to make your own. Glue or tie on small

wooden frames with photos of the family to the wreath. Fill in thebarren spots with small bows and ornaments.

Fruitful wreath

Instead of an evergreen wreath, create something festive and edi-ble. Fruit and vegetables in vibrant colors can be used to fashiona wreath. Use picks or wire to attach oranges, lemons, limes, clementines, and any other produce desired to a foam wreath. Useleaves to fill in sparse areas and a thick ribbon to hang the wreath.

Holly vine wreath

Purchase a plain grapevine wreath and decorate it with sprigs ofholly leaves and stems with berries. Simple and festive, thiswreath should take only a few minutes to make and then hang.

Metallic wreath

Add a glamorous touchto an evergreen wreathwith faux fruit and pinecones that you paintwith glimmering metal-lic colors. Intersperseitems in gold, copperand silver for an eye-catching piece that canadorn any spot in yourhome. Add a few twin-kling lights to reflect offof the metallic elementsto add even moreappeal.

Bells or glass ornamentwreath

Use flexible wire tostring a wreath of metal bells or glass ornaments together in a ringshape. Bells not only look nice but also lend a gentle twinklingsound anytime the door is opened.

Floral wreath

Make a fresh flower wreath from a florist’s wreath and freshblooms. Soak the foam wreath in water according to the packageddirections. Trim flower stems (carnations are durable) and insertthe stems into the wreath. Attach a bow to the bottom of thewreath and then hang. This is one wreath that is best displayed theday of the festivities because it has a short shelf life.

(Family Features) Whether you’re planningyour first holiday gathering or you’re a sea-soned host, throwing a successful bashrelies on creativity and a solid plan.

“Pick one or two elements of your gatheringthat you personalize and keep the rest sim-ple,” advises DIY and entertaining expertBrit Morin of Brit + Co. “With a few cleverideas in your back pocket, you can pull offthe perfect party.”

Make your event the highlight of the holi-day season with Brit’s simple tips:

* Show your style. Are you going for tradi-tional holiday decor, cocktail chic or color-ful and kid-friendly? Find or create a pat-tern and repeat it throughout your party ele-ments. If you go with something simple liketriangles, use triangles in your decorativegarlands, invites, table settings and more.Add an unexpected accent by trimmingyour countertops, bookshelves or chair legswith patterned tape to match your theme.

* DIY with confidence. Don’t be intimidat-ed by a little DIY. Make your own center-piece by filling a rustic bucket with striped

lollipops or candy canes, or a glass hurri-cane vase with pumpkins, pinecones orornaments. Repurpose an old sweater tocreate a cozy koozie for glass jars filledwith snacks.

* Time-saving treats. Simple, deliciousrecipes are a life-saver. Select easy-to-pre-pare dishes like cheese trays, veggie platesand crowd-pleasing snacks such asChex(tm) Party Mix, which you can maketo match nearly any theme or flavor combi-nation. The best part - the recipes can bemade in just 15 minutes in the microwaveand some are 100 percent gluten free.

* End with a bang. Leave your guests witha lasting impression and send them homewith a holiday travel kit. Create a bag withtravel essentials like ear plugs, headachemedicine, bottled water and snacks to enjoyduring long car rides or layovers.

Holiday Entertaining Made Easy

With so much on our plates between Thanksgiving and NewYear’s Day, the holiday season can be hectic. Fortunately, thereare many ways to save time and make the holiday season moremanageable. • If you don’t have plastic clips to hang lights around windows andto the eaves of your home, inexpensive clothespins will work justas well. If you’re concerned about the color of the wooden clips, paint them holiday hues before stringing the lights.• Put a bath mat, rug-side down and rubber-side up, beneath yourChristmas tree stand. This allows you to spin the tree as you hanglights and ornaments without damaging the floor underneath. Italso makes it simple to undress the tree once the season is over.Use a tree skirt to hide the mat.• Squeeze artificial tree portions into concrete form tubes. Firstwrap the tree portions in twine and then slip them into the concretesleeves. Each tube can be stowed in attic or garage rafters, freeingup precious space.• Use empty squirt bottles to make baking and cooking easier.Pancake and cookie batters can be squirted from the containers forless mess.• Store one or two strings of lights in a plastic shopping bag tokeep the strands from getting tangled. Hang the bags from a hook

in a garage or stack them in a storage bin.• Use plastic zip ties to attach garland and lights to bannisters. They’re easy to assemble and will not damage the bannisters.• A paper towel holder can be screwed to the wall in a craft roomto neatly hold spools of ribbon. Simply pull the length you needfrom the spool and cut for easy decorating.• Mount a tree stand to a piece of wood with screws or glue. Thisprevents spills from reaching the floor while stabilizing the tree.• Old maps make interesting gift wrap and are a nice change ofpace from commercially produced paper or newsprint.• Wrap duct tape or another type of sticky tape around your hand.Pat over fallen pine needles that accumulate around the tree. Inhard-to-reach areas, wrap the tape around a broom or a floorsweeper.• Place hardened brown sugar in a baking dish, cover it with a

moist paper towel andeither microwave it onhigh for 20-second inter-vals or place it in a 300 Foven for five minutes. This will soften the sugar, making it easier to use thesugar to prepare yourfavorite holiday cookierecipes.• Save plastic bread ties, which can be used tomake tags for the wires on certain devices. Such ties also can beused to organize decorating components and to keep your place ona roll of tape.
