API GIVES YOU THE MOST INCLUSIVE

AND HIGHEST QUALITY INTERNSHIP

EXPERIENCE ABROAD FOR THE PRICE.

API international internships provide unique opportunities for participants to explore and cultivate their future career path through a high-quality, credit-bearing placement in several exciting fields and destinations. API internship programs encompass a number of career development and cultural resources to help participants maximize their personal and professional development.

CAREER CULTIVATIONWhile still valuable, domestic internships limit the chance to expand one’s global awareness and understanding. During the API program, participants will be immersed in the culture by living and working alongside locals. API will help participants settle into their new home through our Workplace and Culture Orientation Program (only available through our 8-Week Fixed Date Internship Program). Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the host country’s history, people, and workplace differences before they start their internship placement. This will help prepare participants for the enriching international professional experience ahead! Also included in the program are API-led activities to explore and learn about the local culture.

CAREER EXPLORATIONAn API international internship will set participants on the path towards personal and professional excellence. Whether the goal is to climb the corporate ladder, create a start-up, work in public service, or explore any of the other career paths available, each participant will benefit by having a variety experiences to help discover and shape their interests and passions.

Participants will have access to a wealth of information to help them take charge of planning for their professional future through our pre-departure orientation materials and resources, our exclusive Career Navigation Briefcase, and our on-site Workplace and Culture Orientation.

SELF-DISCOVERYOne of the best outcomes from spending time interning abroad is the opportunity for personal development. Understanding one’s unique passions, interests, character, and natural abilities can help save valuable time and money as they begin their professional career. By stepping outside one’s comfort zone and into new surroundings, participants will have the chance for self-reflection and the opportunity to unlock abilities that they never realized they had.

ADVISINGAPI staff members happily guide participants through the administrative processes of the pre-departure phase of interning abroad. Participants (and families) may contact API as often as needed with questions about placements, academic credit, on-site logistics, visa procedures, housing, and anything else. API staff members, in turn, are frequently in touch with participants regarding program updates, essential travel tips and recommendations for having a successful experience abroad.

TAILORED INTERNSHIP PLACEMENTAPI works with each individual to find the best possible internship match to meet that individual’s learning objectives and future career interests. Depending on the destination, the applicant’s level of education, foreign language ability, and placement area competitiveness, the applicant may need to have some flexibility with the placements available.

MOBILE PHONEAll API students receive information about cell phone usage while abroad. API program fees include a variety of options, such as international SIM cards with discounted calling packages or international phones with limited pre-paid minutes.

ALUMNI NETWORKAPI can connect prospective program participants with recently returned API alumni through the API alumni Network. These alumni can share their experience, answer questions, and connect with students pre-departure. Upon their return, API alumni have the opportunity to participate in a number of alumni programming opportunities including the API Global Leadership Academy.

SOCIAL MEDIAAPI was one of the first international education organizations to establish a strong presence on social media, and we’ve received several awards and industry accolades for our outreach efforts. Join the conversation before you go abroad! Just follow us and look for the #ispyapi hashtag on your preferred networks above!

ORIENTATION MATERIALS AND RESOURCES All API participants receive orientation information to help them prepare for their international internship placement. API participants have access to a unique online service, the API Toolbox, which includes orientation materials highlighting logistical details, cultural differences, what participants can expect at their internship placement, health and safety concerns, travel tips and more.

CAREER NAVIGATION BRIEFCASE One’s international internship is not just about the destination. It will be a journey of adventures, experiences, learning, successes, and challenges, which serve to help one grow as a person and professional. To help

participants through this remarkable career exploration and cultivation experience, API has created our exclusive Career Navigation Briefcase. The Career Navigation Briefcase will include the following resources to help participants start developing their career both at home and abroad:

RESIDENT DIRECTORS/COORDINATORS API has highly qualified, trained, and experienced English-speaking Resident Directors/Coordinators available to participants throughout their session abroad. Most Resident Directors/Coordinators are locals from the host country in which participants will be interning and all are ready to provide practical information and insight into the host culture. Our Resident Directors/Coordinators introduce participants to the ways of life in their host country, help participants get settled into their placements, and support participants throughout their stay. They are available in case of any personal emergency and are ready to implement the API emergency response plans if needed.

MEDICAL AND LIFE INSURANCEMedical and life insurance is provided for all participants during the program term. The coverage includes medical evacuation and repatriation, as well as 24-hour support for medical issues.

Participants are offered API-sponsored social and cultural activities, including outings to movies, concerts, cultural tours, theater performances, outdoor activities, museums, and more. All entrance fees are covered by API. Participants also enjoy both welcome and farewell group meals.

WORKPLACE AND CULTURE ORIENTATION We understand that going overseas for an international internship can be an exciting but overwhelming undertaking. To ensure that our interns are prepared for this intensive academic and career experience, we have developed a special internship orientation program to ease the transition into the host country.

All of the interns participating in the 8-Week Fixed Date Internship Program will receive our unique 3-day Workplace and Culture Orientation. During this fun and educational orientation, interns will have the opportunity to build relationships with other participants, discover the local culture, learn about the host country work environment, attend career related workshops, and participate in local cultural activities.

HOUSING Housing is included in the API program fee and varies by destination. Housing typically consists of student apartments and homestays. In some locations, participants my have a choice between the two options. Participants should expect the accommodation to be centrally located and easily accessible to public transportation. Each participant’s commute will vary, as internship placements are located in different areas in each location. Average commute times range from 30 minutes up to an hour, and participants should anticipate taking multiple modes of transport depending on the location (bus, train, subway, ferry, etc). Participants will receive their confirmed housing assignment approximately three weeks prior to departure.

A $250 security deposit is due by the final payment deadline for all programs. A fee of $75 will be retained from all security deposits to cover standard cleaning fees and general maintenance fees, including minor repairs and standard touch-up painting. The remaining $175 is refundable provided that: 1) no additional fees are assessed on-site for incidentals, damages or excessive utility usage; and 2) the API program fee has been paid in full. Refer to the city information sections on the API website for more specific housing information by location.

“INTERNING ABROAD IS A GREAT WAY TO ACCOMPLISH MULTIPLE GOALS WITH ONE PROGRAM. I WAS ABLE TO PRACTICE MY SPANISH, GAIN VALUABLE WORK EXPERIENCE AND TRAVEL AROUND THE COUNTRY, ALL WHILE RECEIVING ACADEMIC CREDIT.” - SHANNON R.

ACADEMIC CREDIT AND TRANSCRIPT API’s fixed date internships offer participants the option to earn academic credit (for an additional fee). Participants may petition their home university for academic credit for work completed on a flex date internship.

Upon completion of a fixed-date internship, an official transcript from an accredited U.S. university is sent to the student’s home institution if they’ve requested a transcript and paid the additional fee. Prior to beginning their internship program, API encourages participants to discuss academic credit options with home school advisors to determine if and how credits may be earned. Academic credit for internships must be approved and arranged before the internship begins as credit typically cannot be retroactively arranged.

ALUMNI NETWORK AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES Returning students have the opportunity to continue to be engaged with API through a variety of alumni programming opportunities. Whether you are connected through the API Alumni Network, keeping up to date with current job postings and items of interest in the API Alumni Facebook and LinkedIn groups, or participating in API’s Global Leadership Academy, API continues to support participants post-experience.

API is happy to accept institutional and federal financial aid that is processed by the participant’s home university. Participants who plan on using financial aid toward the cost of the intern abroad session should meet with their school’s financial aid office EARLY! All participants, even those who are not currently receiving financial aid, are encouraged to meet with financial aid representatives at their home university to determine eligibility for scholarships, grants, or loans that may be available for their abroad program. Some participants are even eligible to increase the amount of their financial aid award based on the comparative cost of living abroad. API signs consortium agreements as necessary to ensure that financial aid can be applied to the API program cost.

INTERNSHIP SCHOLARSHIPParticipants may apply for scholarships of up to $500 per term to participants on the fixed date internships.

BENJAMIN A. GILMAN AWARDThe Gilman Scholarship Program provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. Students participating in an API program who have been awarded a Gilman scholarship will be eligible to receive up to $500 in matching contributions from API for an intern abroad program.

Before beginning their internships, Amanda and Campbell spent three days participating in API’s Workplace and Culture Orientation Program. Interning abroad can be an exciting but overwhelming experience. To help interns have a smooth transition into their host culture, API delivers this active, fun and educational orientation to help participants quickly integrate into the city and their internships.

We decided to asked Amanda and Campbell about their initial first few days in London and this is what they said:

HOW DID THE WORKPLACE AND CULTURE ORIENTATION PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR INTERNSHIP? AMANDA: It was great to get a lot of background knowledge on London and the terms and phrases they use here. I thought it was funny that a “band aid” is referred to as “plaster.” Marilyn Grundy, our onsite support and orientation leader, was extremely helpful in giving us street smarts, such as how to get a meal deal for work lunches and how to interact with our supervisors. When I arrived, I remembered from orientation that it is a good sign if your co-workers are being witty and sarcastic with you, because that is the English way of showing they like you.CAMPBELL:

This orientation prepared me very well for my internship in London. I was able to learn about London, past and present, while soaking up all the history. Also, during this orientation we were taught how to interact with true Londoners. What is a very appropriate and acceptable topic to discuss back in the States definitely might not be acceptable here. So it was good to learn those things.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE CULTURAL ACTIVITY DURING THE ORIENTATION?AMANDA:

I really enjoyed the day that we got the London Pass! Marilyn set us up with the London Pass, which gave us free access to many of the key sites and locations around London. Campbell and I successfully saw 7 or 8 of the top places you must visit while in London, such as: The Globe Theatre, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, a River tour, Hop on Hop Off Bus tour, Tower Castle, etc. It was a packed day, but very fulfilling to realize that we could figure out our way throughout London on limited amount of time.CAMPBELL:

My favorite cultural activity was probably the Churchill War Rooms. I had no idea to what lengths they went to during those times. We have never had a war on American soil, so it was so neat seeing how they functioned during the war. Going through the bunker that they lived was so cool; I could have spent hours reading everything.

WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORT THING YOU LEARNED FROM THE ORIENTATION?AMANDA:

One thing that I am extremely grateful for is the amount of confidence I gained within the first few days of living in London, including knowing my way around the city using the underground metro system, which Londoners refer to as the Tube. Using the Tube so many times throughout orientation was very helpful because we could safely ask questions while learning to navigate on our own. During one of our orientation activities, Marilyn made us find our way to our internship site and it forced us to really rely upon our sense of direction and knowledge of the Tube map and London streets. When I was actually on my own, commuting to work soon after orientation, it felt like I had been traveling around London for weeks.CAMPBELL:

How to survive in London. You can come to London and be swallowed by everything, but orientation taught us the “loop holes” on how to adapt and live here. It would be very easy to go out and spend $50 every single day if you weren’t careful, but we were able to learn about the meal deals that a lot of places offer, or top up card money savers. You definitely have to learn to become very street smart here, and I use what I learned every day.
