McDaniel ha puesto en marcha una investigación sobre la causa y el impacto del derrame. “Hoy durante mi visita a Mayflower, me quedó cla-ro que los residentes de la

zona tienen un largo y difícil camino antes de volver a la normalidad,” dijo McDaniel. “Nuestra oficina hará todo lo posible para ayudar a los resi-dentes afectados de Arkansas, e investigará este incidente. “During my visit to May-flower today, it became clear to me that the residents of the area have a long and difficult road back to normalcy,” Mc-Daniel said. “Our office will do everything it can to help affected Arkansans, and we will thoroughly investigate this incident. I appreciate

the efforts of the hundreds of workers who have donned hazmat suits and are actively attempting to clean up the site, and the local, state and federal officials who are in Mayflower to assist.”

McDaniel launched his investigation Tuesday, re-questing that Exxon preserve

documents and other records related to the spill.

Twenty-two families were still displaced from their homes on March 29 evening. On Friday, a week after the cleanup continued.

“It’s been rough,” said homeowner Tiffany Arguello.

The Pegasus pipeline

was constructed in the 1940s and stretches from Patoka, Ill., to Nederland, Texas. Exxon says the 20-inch subterranean pipeline has a capac-ity of about 95,000 barrels per day.

The federal Envi-ronmental Protection Agency has catego-rized the oil spill as a “major spill.” Exxon officials estimate sev-eral thousand barrels of Wabasca Heavy crude was released. The oil flowed into a ditch adjacent to the Union Pacific railroad line in May-

flower, and eventually into a tributary of Lake Conway. Efforts have been successful thus far in keeping the oil out of the lake, Exxon says.

Res iden ts f rom 21 homes in the North Woods subdivision have been displaced from their homes because of air quality concerns. The EPA continues to monitor air quality. In addition, McDaniel said Wednesday that his of-fice and the Arkansas Department of Health had received reports

that several students at an elementary school in the af-fected area had gone home sick because of nausea.

Fifteen vacuum trucks and 33 storage tanks are on site, and Exxon reports hav-ing removed approximately 12,000 barrels of water and oil during the first few days of cleanup. Crews are starting the removal of contaminated soil and vegetation from resi-dential areas.

Many residents of the af-fected neighborhood said they were unaware that the pipe-line was located in the area.

Arkansans who want to determine whether a pipeline is located nearby may visit the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Adminis-tration’s website at www.

npms.phmsa.dot.gov. The administration, an arm of the U.S. Department of Trans-portation, has an on-line pipeline mapping system.

The website al-lows consumers to view maps of trans-mission pipelines, plants and breakout tanks by county. The administration also provides summaries of enforcement activities nationwide and enforcement information for specific op-erators.

Following the Mayflower incident, McDaniel said his office is evaluating all appro-

priate measures to represent the state and its agencies, including the Arkansas De-partment of Environmental Quality and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Diseñado exclusivamente para las niñas de sexto, séptimo y octavo grado, Camp iRock ofrece actividades educativas,

talleres y ejercicios destinados a promover la actividad física, los estilos de vida saludables y el autoestima.

Cuarenta jóvenes serán seleccionadas de todo el estado para asistir al campamento de forma gratuita. Las solicitudes están disponibles en línea en el sitio web, www.campirock.com y la fecha límite para las

for girls in sixth, seventh and eighth grade, Camp iRock offers educational activities, workshops and exercises aimed at promoting physical activ-ity, healthy lifestyles and self-confidence.

Forty girls will be selected from across the state to attend the camp free of charge. Ap-plications are available on line at www.campirock.com and

the deadline for applications is April 15, 2013.

According to the Arkansas Center for Health Improve-ment, one in three Arkansas public school students are over-weight or at risk for overweight. These children have a higher risk of developing diabetes, orthopedic problems, sleep dis-turbances and kidney problems. In addition, behavioral and psy-chological problems have been related to childhood obesity,

and obese students are twice as likely to be in special education as non-obese students.

“The Arkansas Minority Health Commission is proud of the success of last the two year’s camps and our campers, and we hope to generate that same positivity and impact in 2013,” says Dr. Idonia Trot-ter, executive director of the AMHC. “Providing this experi-ence to girls in minority com-munities is an important part of

making an impact on the health disparities that the AMHC was created to address.”

Behind any child abuse statistic are heartbreaking child abuse stories. The real-ity is that even today, child abuse remains an “uncom-fortable” subject in our so-ciety even with the rates of child abuse increasing. Child abuse reaches across all cul-tures, socio-economic lines, religions and educational levels.

Child abuse statistics are available to the public to make anyone aware of how common it is. We wanted to

remind people that during this month of April, please educate yourself more on the topic of child abuse and learn the signs and ACT!

Here are a few statistics about child abuse that will not just make you think about the problem, but perhaps stand up and make a difference in the prevention of child abuse:

Over 3 million reports of child abuse were reported last years. However experts argue that the real existing number of actual child abuse is triple the number.

Every 10 seconds, a re-

port of child abuse is made.Of the number of re-

ported rapes of children under 12 years old, 90% knew their perpetrator.

79% of the children who are killed because of abuse are younger than 4 years old.

There are 4 fatalities due to child abuse and neglect each year.

If you suspect abuse of a child, please report. Once the signs are picked up on (like unexplained bruises, behavior changes/regressive behaviors, fear of certain adults/caregivers).

Sometimes older chil-dren who are suffering from abuse, will not come right out and disclose, but they may tell their friends over time about their abuse.

If you happen to be a parent, listen to what your child tells you about another child. If things don’t sound right, and you strongly sus-pect abuse or neglect make the call. You can save a child’s life!

Del número de denun-cias de violación de niños menores de 12 años de edad, el 90% conoce a su agresor.

Sometimes happens, but do not panic, you should organize your tax files and seek the help of a qualified tax preparer. Regardless of the reason why could not meet the dateline,

If you are unsure if you have the requirement to sub-mit a tax return, see the Publication 17 Your Federal Income Tax for Individuals. If you can not pay the full

amount of tax owed accord-ing to the tax return, the IRS could help you making a pay-ment installment plan.

If you did not pay the full tax amount by the dateline, you also might be subject to the failure to pay penalty. Now if you were unemployed last year request an exten-sion to pay the tax owed the IRS offers a “fresh start” complete the form 1127A, Application for Extension

of Time for Payment of Tax Due to Undue Hardship. There is no failure to file pen-alty if you expect a refund. But if you wait to file a tax return or claim for refund, the risk of losing the reimburse-ment is bigger.

In the majority of cases, you can receive a refund; the IRS needs to process a tax return. There is a three-year window of opportunity to claim a refund. If no return

is filed to claim a refund within three years, the money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury.
