CHARLIE ADAM

“ HODGSON TURNS TANGERINE FOR THE DAY”

Blackpool FC star Charlie Adam came to Hodgson and opened the new Sports Hall. Students from the Hodgson Echo team went to interview him and this is what he had to say!

Echo: Firstly, hello and welcome to Hodgson

Charlie:: Thank you

Echo: So Charlie, Blackpool have been doing pretty well recently, haven’t they?

Charlie:: Yes we have, it’s a big step up from The Championship, and all of the lads have realised that. Although, we are doing rela-tively well and hope to keep it going that way.

Echo: Do you like having Ian Holloway as your manager?

Charlie:: Yeah, he was the one who brought me here, and he is a fantastic man-ager. He does, like all managers, say stuff we don’t want to hear, but he really is great. You can talk about anything to him, and he isn’t just a manager, he is also a friend to all of us.

Echo: So how are you finding premiership life?

Charlie:: Yeah I like it, it’s nice to be playing against world famous and much harder team. To be honest, I’m just trying to get the much I can out of it.

Echo: Finally, are you looking forward to opening our sports hall?

Charlie: Yeah, it’s nice to be invited to the school and show the connections be-tween us, and its also nice for Sophie to be back and meet all of her old teach-ers. Also, you’re really lucky to have such great teachers, and to come to a great school.

Echo: Thank you

SCHOOL FLOOD COSTS THOUSANDS

“ CLASSROOM CLOSURE CAUSES CHAOS“

By the middle of December 2010, temperatures around the Blackpool area had dropped to around -6˚C. One of the coldest winters on record; across the country, people were plunged into weather normally seen at the North Pole.

So when School Business Manager Mr. Pickles walked into Hodgson School on Sunday 19th December, he shouldn’t have been too surprised to find that the freezing temperatures had resulted in a pipe bursting, completely drenching one of the music rooms; and although some of the electronic equipment had been ruined, the extent of the damage seemed pretty con-trollable. We hoped our troubles would be all over.

However, our troubles were far from over and the re-sulting catastrophe surprised and shocked Assistant Site Supervisor Mr. van Dalli, who, when he opened up the school three days after Christmas after hearing our trusty fire alarms go off was literally knocked off his feet upon discovering almost all of the English class-rooms on the top floor of B Block were totally soaked through.

The damage was fairly extensive. Hundreds of books and files were left soaked through, and the clear out was a painstaking and emotional task for the language departments.

Upon students return, the disaster was far from for-gotten. Workmen scurried to fix the classrooms and the smells of stagnant water hung in the air.

I spoke to Mr. Pickles about the disaster. He said,

‘There must have been about an inch of water on the floor. Well, that might be a slight exaggeration, but I did bring my wellies in one day!

‘The cost of the damage was quite a lot, but was nowhere near what it could have been. We are lucky that we caught it in time.

‘In my 11 years at Hodgson, I have never seen this happen before.’

Two tanks bursting inside of two weeks at Hodgson School? What a way to dampen the end of 2010!

It sounds like the school was caught quite off guard, and you can’t help wondering if we should have been more prepared for such an event. Hopefully, the school will be more prepared in the future. The surprise of the sudden flood left the school in a sticky situation; it was a bonus for the students - some of whom got nearly an extra week off!

The NTA awards have been the highlight of the last few weeks, knowing who has been nominated, who will win and what awards to get. Top Gear, The Inbetweeners and Waterloo Road were among the winning shows. One of the highlights of that night was when Mr Showbiz himself walked onto the stage, Bruce Forsyth. Playing joker as he always does, with the show opener, ’Nice to see you to see you nice’. Shortly after he then revealed that it would be the perfect time to announce his re-tirement. Almost straight away he laughed and bellowed ’Well I’m not bloody going too!’.

SHOWBIZ “ NTA AWARDS“ Eastenders was the big winner of the evening,

picking up three awards including the prestigious Best Serial Drama. Lacey Turner won Best Serial Drama Performance and Ricky Norwood won Best Newcomer. The whole cast, including re-cent departure Lacey Turner, took the stage to collect the evening’s final award and celebrate before Dermot O’ Leary wrapped up the show.

There was shock line ups for the awards evening, including X factor stars Stacey Solomon and winner Matt Cardle, who gave a live perform-ance of his latest winners song ‘When We Col-lide’.

GAMING & FILM REVIEW. “ANGRY BIRDS & THE KING’S SPEECH”

Page 6

The aim of the game itself is very simple, yet probably the most addict-ing game that the App Store has to offer for your iPod, iPad and iPhone; the aim of the game is to use a slingshot and aim towards your hostile target – a ‘stealing pig’. The power and trajectory of your aim will affect if you are successful or not into your bird attacks, combin-ing this with your objective – it makes it a lot harder with a more of a puzzle towards it than any other ordinary shooting game.

When George’s brother abdicates the throne to marry an incongruous woman of ques-tionable pasts, George becomes directly in line to be King. Not yet overcoming his speech problem, he is thrust into the role of public speaking. To further add to the tumult, WW2 whisks him into a role of immense pressure. The film finishes after the King’s first – amongst many – speeches on national radio about the war.

The quirky character of Lionel Logue, played by Geoffrey Rush, gives the story a highly humorous element and the character is skilfully weaved into the positions of wit during sticky situations. His satirical comedy often frustrates the character played by Colin Firth, which leads to palpable friction numerous times.

Colin Firth, set to be a prize nominee at this year’s Oscars, masterfully crafts the slightly weak presence of George VI and develops as he grows in confidence throughout the film.

Overall the well written, if slightly serious, storyline is sprinkled with moments that will make you both laugh and cry and keep you enthralled for all 118 minutes. Under the di-rection of Tom Hooper, the acting makes the film, and all three stars the superb story that it is.

FASHION AND MAKEUP

“THE LATEST TRENDS“

The 2011 new spring fashion season has arrived with a bang and some old favourites have bounced back too. Nautical knitwear is returning in a burst of red white and blue stripes! Nautical accessories are also extremely popu-lar, with many visions of anchors and sea creatures on chunky chains, gracing almost all of our high street stores.

Prom week is on the horizon and there are some stunning dresses and suits for our leavers to wear, for the night of celebration which will end their time at Hodgson leaving them with a final great memory. Whatever colour or style you’re looking for, we are sure you’ll find the outfit of your dreams. A teacher fashion show will be held soon to display their latest outfits, more information will be given soon and I’m sure that it will be a tremendous memory that our current year 11s will treasure forever.

Playsuits seem to be back for another summer whilst floral dresses, skirts and leggings have blossomed back as well! In fact floral patterns are almost everywhere this spring along with big flower accessories of all kinds. As for shoes, the doc martin- work boot style seems to be growing in popularity at a huge rate, with them appearing all over the place in a mind blowing array of colours, styles and materials.

Nautical is back and this fabulous cardigan captures the essence of the trend perfectly.

Leather work boots are everywhere at the moment and can be worn in a load of different ways, lace up all the way or half, with jeans, or with dresses or skirts and leggings. No wonder such a versatile piece is so popular.
