Celebrate the Lasts

“We Celebrate Life” is FairHoPe’s tag line. We do celebrate life and help our patients and their families celebrate life. One of the ways we help people to celebrate life is to recognize the “lasts” of life and help them to celebrate those occurrences. A FairHoPe volunteer once mentioned that one of the honors of being a FairHoPe patient care volunteer is the fact that most likely the volunteer is the last person that the patient will ever meet. I had not thought about that but it is probably true.

I got to thinking about how many people I have met in my life and how many more I have yet to meet. And by this I mean either to be formally introduced, or to interact with in some capacity. How many people does an ordinary person meet during their entire life, 15,000, 30,000? When you think about it, starting at birth you are (sort of) introduced to your mother and father, then immediate family, then aunts and uncles, cousins, and gradually to friends, teachers, clergy, coaches, spouse(s), in-laws, coworkers, neighbors, medical personnel. And finally, should you choose FairHoPe, you meet the FairHoPe team. The patient care volunteer is usually the last person on the FairHoPe team that the patient will meet. The volunteer that I mentioned above said that he tries to treat everyone he is introduced to as the last person he will ever meet and to be honored by it. That seems to emphasize the importance of “lasts” as much as “firsts”.

Our society celebrates the firsts in life but it usually doesn’t celebrate the lasts. We celebrate baby’ first word but what about the last word uttered before death? We celebrate baby’s first step but when was the last step taken, as an adult, before he couldn’t get out of bed anymore? We celebrate the first time that baby put the spoon in her mouth all by herself, but when was the last time she fed herself before cancer left her too weak to lift the spoon?

Personally, I remember the thrill that I experienced the first time, as a little boy, when I broke away from my Dad running alongside me, and rode a two wheeler by myself. But when did I park my bike in the garage, as a teenager, for the last time? That, also, was a milestone and one of those subtle transitions from childhood to adulthood. And when was the last time I played Hide and Seek with my friends in the neighborhood? Although I must admit that I do remember leaving high school on the last day as a Senior and celebrating that “last” life event.

Life has as many lasts as it does firsts. We rarely celebrate the lasts because we rarely know when they occur. FairHoPe staff is aware of how the body slowly turns itself off during the last stage of life and will let a family member know when such a subtle, yet profound event has happened. FairHoPe helps our patients celebrate their lasts just as they had celebrated their firsts. We give our patients and their family time to celebrate their entire life and all their accomplishments.

Not too long ago, one of the lasts that a patient and family got to experience was their last Thanksgiving dinner. With the assistance of FairHoPe staff and volunteers, it was held at The Pickering House. The patient said how much he had always loved Thanksgiving dinner, especially his son-in-law’s homemade noodles. Well, even though it was summertime, we encouraged the family to have a “Last Supper” so to speak and to celebrate. The family brought in all the ingredients and fixed Thanksgiving dinner in The Pickering House’s family kitchen. The Pickering House staff set up a long banquet table in the family dining room, and the patient and family had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. In another instance a husband and wife, with the help of FairHoPe staff and volunteers, were able to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary at home, surrounded by their family just hours before the husband died. In a third example we were able to help a son and his dad go fishing together one last time before the dad died.

When people who are not familiar with FairHoPe hear the word “hospice”, they think of sadness. They don’t think for a minute that there can be time to be happy and to celebrate. Yes there can be. In early life you celebrated the firsts. In later life FairHoPe helps you to complete the Circle of Life and celebrate the lasts. We consider it to be an honor to be the last few people that a patient will meet on this Earth, and we try to make them the best.

A Program of Buckeye Hills Hocking Valley Regional Development District

PRESS RELEASE:

Medicare Counselors Can Help Secure Savings for Many

Across the country, thousands of benefits counselors help people with Medicare find benefits that help them pay for prescriptions, health care, and other necessities.

Since 2009, benefits counselors—supported by the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA)—have helped more than half a million vulnerable seniors and adults with disabilities apply for over $1.6 billion in benefits, and learn about preventive services that can help them stay healthy.

In Southeast Ohio, The Area Agency on Aging 8 (AAA8) counselors Brandi Hesson, CIRS-A, and Gerri VanNoy, SWA, CIRS-A, are professional Information and Referral (I&R) Specialists in Aging (CIRS-A).

Many Ohioans on Medicare with limited income and resources may qualify for the Limited-Income Subsidy (LIS), also called "Extra Help," and the Medicare Savings Program. LIS helps seniors pay for their Medicare Part D premiums, annual deductible and coinsurance for prescription drugs. The Medicare Extra Help Program can save individuals an average of $325 per month on costs associated with prescription drugs. In rural Ohio, many seniors are eligible for these programs, but are not enrolled. AAA8 wants to help spread the word and help Ohio’s aging residents get the help they need for prescriptions. There are many reasons that folks who are eligible do not apply. Some simply don’t know about the program or know how to apply. Many also assume that they make too much and are not financially eligible. They should call AAA8 for details. If you know someone that may qualify, please ask them to call us toll-free at 1-800-331-2644 and ask for the Screening Department. In a matter of minutes, the staff at The Area Agency on Aging can assist them with a free, over-the-phone application.

PHOTO CUTLINE: Area Agency on Aging 8 (AAA8) counselors Brandi Hesson, CIRS-A,(right) and Gerri VanNoy, SWA, CIRS-A (left), are available to help seniors with Medicare questions.Call 1-800-331-2644 today.

Help Spread Happiness By Buying Fair Trade

Happy Artisans and Farmers make Happy CustomersFair Trade gives you a chance to say NO to sweat shops and child labor and to vote with your wallet for a happier world!

You may ask……..WHAT IS FAIR TRADE and how can I make a difference. There are many answers to the question and all are positive.

I think the most important are: vulnerable farmers and artisans are paid fair pay and they enjoy good working conditions, many times working in their homes. By choosing Fair Trade, consumers support safe and healthy working conditions for farmers and artisans and create just economic opportunities for marginalized producers. There are absolutely no sweat shops.

A second reason to shop Fair Trade is it protects children. Local managers uphold children’s rights to security, education, and play. There is no child labor. It creates better lives for the children by ensuring that they are not victims of forced labor and they have an education.

There are several places in the area to buy Fair Trade items. One is the Gift Shop at the Hocking Hills Messenger Print Shop.

More on Fair Trade next issue. Let’s help spread happiness by buying Fair Trade!

Pictured are Fair Trade hand made ceramic coffee cups from Guatemala. They are dishwasher and microwave safe. They are GREAT! The owl is sure to make you smile!
