Compiling the Annual Report each year gives me an opportunity to look back upon the many ways the Hockaday Museum of Art fulfills its mission “To enrich the cultural life of our community and region and preserve the artistic legacy of Montana and Glacier National Park.”

The Museum’s art education programs and outreach services enriched the cultural experiences of more than 6,000 school children, parents and teachers; and our Traveling Medicine Show brought new understanding and appreciation for the art, history and culture of the Blackfeet and other Northern Plains Indian Nations. This year, the Show will travel on new wheels thanks to Kalispell Toyota’s generous price break for a mint-

condition, used van and major sponsorship from Valley Bank of Kalispell. The costs for this outreach service are significant, and we are grateful to PPL Montana Community Fund, Wal-Mart Kalispell Store, Bibler Foundation, and Woodcock Foundation for $26,500 in grants and donations.

Given our curatorial commitment to the art, culture, and history of this region, it is increasingly fitting to call the Hockaday Museum, “Artistic Gateway to Glacier National Park.” With the 75th Anniversary of Going-to-the-Sun Road this summer and the 2010 Glacier Park Centennial on the horizon, our gateway role will crystallize and our partnerships with Glacier Park, Inc., Glacier Fund and Glacier Association will intensify. Our collaborative event, “Fall for Glacier,” will be an unforgettable weekend of art, recreation, socializing, and Nature in East Glacier - an exceptional summer highlight in celebration of our great Park.

With help from generous corporate sponsors Semitool, Glacier Park, Inc., Anderson’s Masonry and Van Kirke and Helen Nelson, the Hockaday will bring Glacier Park’s formative years to life: the incredible adventure and engineering feat of building the Sun Road; the dedication and wisdom of designating Glacier as a national park; the genius behind the stories, photographs, sculptures and paintings that memorialize the Park throughout every age… the Crown of the Continent illuminated from all perspectives. I encourage you to be a “Frequent Browser” during this time in our regional history that comes literally, just once-in-100 years. Come, bring your friends and experience the Artistic Legacy of Montana and Glacier National Park!

A s President of the Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to

inform you that “The State of the Hockaday Museum of Art” is excellent.

Museum members and visitors enjoyed a host of outstanding exhibitions, programs, special events, and outreach services in 2007; and this year promises to move forward with the same quality and grace. I commend our dedicated Executive Director and Staff, Museum Board of Directors, Advisory and Executive Committees, Volunteer Guild and Docents. It takes team commitment to maintain high standards across the board – daily operations, facility maintenance, program development, membership, finances – and we clearly benefited from everyone’s best efforts.

Looking ahead, the Executive Committee and Board of Directors will continue to focus on the long-term strategic plan for the Hockaday. This includes endowment development, collection acquisitions, and moving forward on the Museum’s vision for future expansion under the direction of the Capital Campaign Committee. The Board Development Committee will focus on opportunities for additional Board involvement and the Membership Committee will work closely with the Guild and Museum staff to increase total membership by 30% to 1,500. You can help in this quest. Invite your friends, family, and colleagues to join you for a gallery tour or special event. Everyone benefits from the energy and diversity of new patrons, and member contributions help fund important Hockaday programs.

I encourage you to visit your Museum often, as there is always something new to see and enjoy. Thank you for being a part of the Hockaday and for sharing in the success of this great Museum.

- Fred Leistiko, President of the Board

Marshall Noice, Montana Waters 2006, oil on canvas Hockaday Museum Permanent Collection - Art Acquisition Purchase in Memory of George T. Hanson

Did you know that the Hockaday Museum’s Carnegie build-ing and addition total only 6000 useable square feet? Did you know that the Hockaday Museum is 40 years old this year? Did you know that the Hockaday Museum hosted over 52 free days and free receptions in 2007?

PRESERVING OUR ARTISTIC LEGACY

T he Hockaday Museum’s focus on the art and culture of Glacier National Park and commit-

ment to preserving its legacy positions the Museum naturally as the Artistic Gateway to Glacier Na-tional Park. Works in the Crown of the Continent permanent gallery date from the Park’s glory days under development by the Great Northern Rail-road, to present-day masterworks. Now as then, artists are moved to answer the Call of the Moun-tains…

Today, the collection is expanding in leaps and bounds. Works are acquired mostly through dona-tions to the permanent collection, but thanks to fundraising events such as the Hilton Garden Inn - Signature Event, and donations to the acquisition fund, the permanent collection committee is able to seek out works that greatly complement the Mu-

seum’s mission. Most recently the Museum acquired Elk on Lake McDonald, a painting by John Fery (1859-1934), to the permanent collection. Fery was a prolific artist, employed by the Great Northern Railroad in the early years of the Glacier National Park to paint her majestic peaks and cascading valleys. Additionally, the Hockaday is eagerly anticipating the arrival of a promised gift, destined to be a centerpiece of our collection. The 4x6 feet oil painting by artist O.C. Seltzer (1877-1957), Lake McDonald and Sherwood Cabins, is the largest work by Seltzer known to exist.

The Hockaday Museum is the only Montana Museum with a major focus on the art of Glacier National Park including the significant contributions and influence of the Blackfeet Indian Nation. Works in the permanent collection reflect on this cultural connection through photographs, artifacts, sculptures and paintings that depict the Blackfeet Indians and their role in the Park’s early history. The Museum uses examples from the collection for its Indian Education for All outreach, to encourage examination and discourse. We continue to build our collection of Indian art and artifacts in keeping with our commitment to expand this important segment.

Since its organization in 1968, the Hockaday Museum of Art has featured the work of long-time Flathead resi-dent and cowboy artist, Asa “Ace” Powell (1912-1978). While working as a young man in East Glacier, Ace was inspired by the great Charles M. Russell (1864-1926) and the virtual colony of artists Russell gathered to paint with him at Bullhead Lodge on Lake McDonald. Powell in his turn, cultivated promising art talents in the Flat-head Valley, today’s successful Glacier Park artists. “Ace’s dream was to make Kalispell an art colony and it was he who influenced many artists to come to this area to live and paint.” Thanks to significant donations to the permanent collection from Pat McClarty, and Roger and Deane Claridge, the Hockaday Museum owns a most outstanding public collection on the art of the legendary “Ace of Diamonds,” Ace Powell.

In the early 1970’s, the Museum acknowledged ceramics’ significance to the permanent collection and added exemplary works by such masters as David Shaner (1934-2002), Kurt Weiser and Charles Davis. Recent acquisi-tions include Kiva by David Shaner, purchased with funds from Marion Sample; and a large ceramic vessel by Rudy Autio (1926-2007), on long-term loan from Van Kirke and Helen Nelson. These additions and the rest of the Museum’s impressive collection comprise an excellent foundation upon which we aspire to one day build the state’s most comprehensive collection of Montana ceramic artists.

BUILDING BRIDGES OF UNDERSTANDING

“How was school today, kids?” “Cool! We had class with Blackfeet Indian artists.” The Traveling Medicine Show “hit the road” in February and made its last school visit for the academic year in late May. Although it was originally designed for 4th-5th graders in Native American Studies classes, the trunk project had terrific appeal for all ages and ulti-mately served 1,278 children from Kindergar-ten through 12th Grade. Total audience count exceeded 1,500 when school teachers, adminis-trators, and interested parents and visitors were added. The Show was staged at school request in assembly halls, gymnasiums and

cafeterias as often as in individual class rooms. School principals often began lobbying for the Traveling Medi-cine Show’s return before the trunks were repacked and the team left the building!

Children were quick to join in the hands-on activities taught by Blackfeet artists, in particular the games that combined physical challenges and ethics lessons. Teachers professed to having gained valuable insight from the program as well. Some had believed and been presenting mistaken, largely negative “facts” about today’s North-ern Plains Indians and their experiences throughout history. The wisdom of the traveling trunks fostered new respect for the Indian Nations among non-Indian teachers, school children, and parents. Blackfeet presenters enjoyed their audiences and were pleased for the opportunity to teach young people about Indian ways. Schools rated the team excellent teachers and facilitators.

The Traveling Medicine Show will visit Glacier, Missoula, Lake and Lincoln Counties in the coming academic year. During the summer break, artifacts from the trunk project will be on display in the Museum and the Show will visit “lifelong learners” in area nursing homes. Buffalo Hill Terrace Assisted Living in Kalispell was the first such outreach. Forty delighted residents and staff welcomed the Traveling Medicine Show with great interest.

The Hockaday Museum of Art strives “to enrich the cultural life of our community and region, and preserve the artistic legacy of Montana.” From its inception, the Traveling Medicine Show project has followed that star. The trunks, their sacred contents, and the Blackfeet artists and Hockaday staff who share them are employing art to transcend divisions that have limited us for generations. The Museum continually searches for grants to sus-tain the project, so the Traveling Medicine Show can journey on, building bridges of understanding and respect across all that divides us.

The Traveling Medicine Show is an educational trunk project that brings the ancient, traditional and contemporary art, history and culture of the Northern Plains Indians alive for school students in Flathead, Lake, Lincoln and Glacier Counties of North-west Montana. Project impetus and initial funding were provided by a grant from the Montana State Office of Public Instruc-tion (OPI), to facilitate implementation of Montana’s Indian Education for All Act. A second OPI grant supplied staff train-ing, and a grant from the Woodcock Foundation for Appreciation of the Arts assisted with costs for staff time and travel to outlying schools. Most recently, a grant from PPL Montana will greatly assist the program with funding for the production of a DVD to accompany the trunks to area schools and assist with post-visit studies that will further promote the essential under-standings of Indians. The DVD’s will be made available to schools across the state.

Vision for the Future...

Last year at the direction of the Board of Directors, the Hockaday Museum embarked on an exciting journey. With the Museum’s unprecedented growth - in membership, number of exhibitions, outreach programs, size and value of the permanent collection - comes the need for additional exhibition and edu-

cation space. The Hockaday must expand to accommodate continued growth, community interest and the man-dates of our mission.

Upon careful review, the Board decided to remain in the historic Carnegie Building whose central location in Kalispell provides the best opportunity to serve the Flathead Valley and the state of Montana.

With financial support from the City of Kalispell, Directors, and Patrons listed on page 17, the Hockaday Mu-seum acquired the adjacent two properties. John Hilbury, New York Museum consultant, along with Grover and Co. assisted with a needs assessment to determine space requirements for the expanded Museum. We are moving forward with a campaign to expand at our current location and build an endowment to support opera-tions of the larger facility.

The Hockaday Museum of Art serves as a cultural anchor for our growing community. Our permanent collection of the art and artists of Glacier National Park, the Blackfeet Indian Nation and important works by Montana artists has gained the Museum national recognition and attracted an increasing number of visitors every year. As the Museum has grown, so have the number and stature of bequeathed gifts. An expanded museum will provide a secure and proper place for these art pieces to be exhibited and enjoyed for future generations.

Our vision is to be a world-class museum with a growing collection of exemplary art from our region and state; to positively influence the local economy; and to enrich the cultural life of our community. The Hockaday Museum of Art is at the threshold to becoming one of the nation’s premier regional museums. We are ready to move into our future, and our first step is to make room for all that our future holds. -Tabby Ivy, Campaign Chair
