head coachmatt Kerwick ’90

matt KerwicK ’90 returned to his alma mater in 2001 and has had a consider-able impact on the lives of Hobart

men during his tenure. In six seasons, he has led the Statesmen to their 24th and 25th NCAA Tournament appearances and a second conference championship, while mentoring 22 all-conference selections and the 2005 ECAC Rookie of the Year.

One of the rising stars in lacrosse coach-ing circles, Kerwick was an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team at the 2006 ILF World Championship. The Americans brought home the silver medal.

Last season, his Statesmen finished second in the nation in extra-man offense, scoring 51.2 percent of the time. Hobart was also among the top 25 in scoring offense (14th, 10.64 gpg) and faceoff winning percentage (23rd, .510). Individually, attackman Jamie Kirk ’08 led the nation in assists, while attackman Daryl Velt-man ’08 and midfielder Chris David ’07 earned All-ECAC honors.

In 2005, Kerwick guided the Statesmen through their first season in the ultra-com-petitive ECAC Lacrosse League. Individually, defenseman Greg McCarthy ’05 became the first Statesman named to the Tewaaraton Award preseason watch list and the first two-time All-American for Hobart since the program moved to Division I in 1995, while Veltman was named the league’s Rookie of the Year after scoring a team-leading 50 points.

In 2004, Kerwick and the Statesmen finished second in the Patriot League regular season and tournament standings and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament on the strength of a 9-6 record that included wins over No. 9 Cornell and No. 13 Army.

During his first season, Kerwick guided the Statesmen to the Patriot League crown and was named the league’s Coach of the Year.

In 12 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Kerwick sports a career record of 90-78 for a .536 winning percentage. Among active Divi-sion I coaches, he ranks in the top 25 in both career wins and career winning percentage.

Kerwick returned to his alma mater fol-lowing three seasons as an assistant coach at Georgetown University. With the Hoyas, he served as the offensive coordinator. Georgetown earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament in each of Kerwick’s three seasons, advancing to the semifinals in 1999 for the first time in the program’s history. During his tenure, the Hoyas were 36-9 (.800) and 3-3 in the postseason, including a 14-12 first round win over Cornell on Hobart’s Boswell Field in 2000.

Prior to his time in Washington, Kerwick spent three seasons as the head coach of the Alfred University lacrosse program. Under his leadership, the Saxons reached the postseason each year, earning a spot in the 1997 NCAA Tournament field and 1996 and 1998 ECAC Upstate Tournament berths. Alfred was 25-17 (.595) in his three seasons. Following his 1996 Super Six Lacrosse League Coach of the Year Award, Kerwick was named the 1997 “Babe” Kraus Division III Coach of the Year.

Kerwick moved to Alfred following one season as an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to his stint with the Quak-ers, he spent three seasons as the head coach at Randolph-Macon College. Kerwick led the Yellow Jackets to a 27-14 record (.659), at the time the three most successful seasons in the program’s history.

As a player for the Statesmen, he was a member of four Division III National Champi-onship teams, was a two-time USILA All-Amer-ican, and earned the 1989 NCAA Tournament MVP Award. He was also a four-year letterwin-ner on the Hobart hockey team, serving as a captain for both squads during his senior year. He capped off his collegiate career with the Wil-liam C. Stiles ’43 Award, given to the Hobart senior student-athlete for leadership, determina-tion, and character.

In addition to collegiate lacrosse, Kerwick played in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League from 1991 through 1996. He was a two-time recipient of the Baltimore Thunder’s Unsung Hero Award (1991 and ’92) and was an All-Star selection in 1992.

Kerwick and his wife, Mary, live in Geneva with their sons, Thomas and Sean.

assistant coaches

Jim morrisseyJim Morrissey joined the Hobart coach-

ing staff in the fall of 2006. A former assistant coach at Syracuse and Cornell, Morrissey was a two-time All-American as a player for the Syracuse Orange.

Morrissey began his coaching career with a single season stint at Cornell, before returning to his alma mater prior to the 1999 season. As a member of the SU coaching staff, he helped the Orange to a 12-5 record and a national runner up finish in his first season. In 2000, Morrissey and Syracuse ran up a 15-1 record and captured the national championship. He left coaching following that season, spending the next six years in corporate sales.

No stranger to championship rings, Mor-rissey won two titles as an attackman for the Or-ange in 1993 and 1995. A two-time honorable mention All-American, Morrissey represented Syracuse in the 1996 North-South All-Star Classic, capping a career that saw him score 106 goals and earn 70 assists. He graduated from Syracuse in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

In addition to his collegiate playing experi-ence, Morrissey played three seasons in the indoor National Lacrosse League with the Syra-cuse Smash. In 15 career games, he registered nine goals and 21 assists and collected 51 loose balls. Morrissey also spent two seasons with the Rochester Rattlers of the outdoor Major League Lacrosse.

Terry MuffleyNow in his sixth season as a volunteer

assistant coach for the lacrosse team, Terry Muf-fley boasts more than three decades of coaching experience. He also has served as the defensive line coach for the Hobart football team for the past nine seasons.

With the lacrosse team, Muffley works pri-marily with the team’s faceoff specialists. This season, he’ll mentor Face-off Yearbook preseason All-ECAC pick Dan Spinella. The senior, who also plays fullback for the football team, has ranked in the top 30 in the nation in each of the past two seasons, including a fourth-place finish in 2006.

On the gridiron, Muffley has helped the Statesmen to six conference championships, six NCAA Tournament apperances, and the 2003 ECAC North Atlantic Bowl Championship.

A veteran high school coach, Muffley was a fixture on the Geneva High School sidelines for more than two decades, assisting the Panthers’ lacrosse team to three Section V Champion-ships and the football team to two league titles, as well as coaching the volleyball team and assisting with the basketball team.

Muffley earned a bachelor’s degree from East Stroudsburg University, and holds a mas-ter’s degree in education from SUNY-Oswego.

A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps with service in Vietnam, Muffley recently retired following nearly 30 years as a teacher in the Geneva City School District. He lives in Geneva with his wife, Cindy. They have two children, Patrick and Bess.

t.w. JohnsonT.W. Johnson returns for his fourth season

as the Statesmen’s top assistant coach. He joined the Hobart staff following three seasons as the head coach at Limestone College.

During his tenure with the Saints, Johnson posted an impressive record of 41-7 (.854), including a perfect 19-0 in Deep South Conference play and 9-0 in the Deep South Tournament. The 2004 “Babe” Kraus Division II Coach of the Year led Limestone to three consecutive conference championships and three straight NCAA Division II Championship games, including the 2002 title.

Johnson mentored 22 All-Deep South selections, including three straight Deep South Players of the Year. He also coached 16 USILA All-Americans, including two Division II Players of the Year.

Prior to his time at Limestone, Johnson served as an assistant coach at Lynchburg Col-lege for five years, helping the Hornets to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999.

A native of Chesapeake, Va., Johnson is a 1996 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history. The three-year starting defenseman served as team captain as a senior. In 1995, he led the Tigers to the Old Dominion Athletic Confer-ence championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. In 1998, he earned a master’s degree in education from Lynchburg.

Johnson lives in Geneva with his wife, Elizabeth, and their daughter, Abigail.

season outlook

the hobart lacrosse team will begin its 106th varsity season with an experienced and deep attack, an equally talented and

deep midfield, and a bevy of talented goalies. The key to the Statesmen’s success will rest with the close defense.

The difference between a great season and a disappointing one in Division I lacrosse is razor thin. For the Statesmen in 2007, that margin was just six goals.

A half dozen tallies were all that stood between Hobart and a 9-5 record, instead of 5-9. The Statesmen were on the wrong end of overtime decisions to Bucknell (11-10) and Rutgers (12-11) and two-goal setbacks to Syracuse (13-11) and Georgetown (15-13). Hobart also suffered a bit of bad luck in the loss to the Hoyas. The contest was originally scheduled to be played in Geneva, but a late-season snow storm forced a move to the nation’s capital. Could the friendly crowd of a home game have swung the fickle pendulum of momentum in the Statesmen’s favor? No one will ever know.

This year’s team isn’t worried about the past, choosing to focus their attention squarely on 2008. With 15 lettermen, including eight starters, returning, the coaching staff is excited about the goal scoring potential this team possesses.

With five of the top six scorers and 10 of the top 12 returning, one thing is certain, Hobart will continue to stay true to the origins of the game that earned the slogan, “The fastest game on two feet.” While other programs scheme to find ways to keep scores low and choke the excitement out of the game, the Statesmen will continue to run and shoot in the grandest tradition of the game.

Here’s a position-by-position look at Hobart.

attacKWhile the Canadian Connection of

seniors Jamie Kirk (Orangeville, Ontario) and Daryl Veltman (Coquitlam, B.C.) became the focus and frustration of defensive coordinators everywhere, Jeff Colburn quietly piled up comparable numbers.

Kirk led the team in the most unassuming way, registering 50 points on 12 goals and 38 assists. His 2.71 assists per game led the nation, while his 3.57 points per game ranked 12th. Kirk is the first Statesman to lead the nation in goals, assists or points since Hobart moved to Division I in 1995.

Unbelievably, despite recording more

points than any player in the ECAC and more points than 12 of the 23 USILA All-American attackmen, he didn’t receive accolades from either group, although he clearly merited it.

Kirk’s incredible vision benefited linemates Veltman and Colburn, who both recorded career-highs in goals scored. Veltman, who led the team in points in the two season’s prior to Kirk’s arrival, logged 33 goals and 11 assists in 2007, while Colburn produced 21 goals and 12 assists.

The Statesmen also boast a deep reserve that will test the coaching staff’s creativity as they work to find ways to get everyone on the field. Sophomores Kevin Curtin (7gm 2g 1a) and Daniel Keegan (10gm 1g 0a) were solid reserves a year ago. They have made great strides

during the offseason and are ready for more responsibility.

Junior transfer Tyler Hill (Onondaga Community College) and first-years Ryan Liebel and Mike White have all shown great promise in preseason workouts and could see significant playing time. Liebel has enough offensive talent that the coaches may move him from attack to midfield just to get him on the field.

midFieldSenior captains Nick Currie and Sean

Murphy return as the core of Hobart’s top midfield line. Currie is the top returning midfielder after recording 17 goals and five assists. He’s also a threat on the extra-man,

Senior attackman Jamie Kirk led the nation in assists in 2007. Only one active player in Division I has more career assists than Kirk’s 79 (Vermont & Hobart combined).

There’s no shortage of players capable of rounding out the top line. Sophomores Mike Suits (5g 2a) and Mike Lazore (6g 0a) could be ready for the limelight of a starting role. Suits was Hobart’s most consistent midfielder throughout the preseason and will see time at both ends of the field, while Lazore is an accurate shooter with the range to score from the outside.

Sophomores Doug Shiver (2g 0a) and Tyler Cassell (0g 1a) will also compete for time on one of the Statesmen’s top lines, as will first-year Nick Blumer.

Junior d-middie Matt Smalley led the team (77) and was eighth in the nation (5.5/g) in ground balls last season. He’s a one-man clearing machine, and may see time on the offensive end of the field thanks to the progress of sophomore Lex Kridler. The Ohioan will be Hobart’s No. 2 option on faceoffs and be a top option at d-middie.

The success at the X will rest largely on the capable shoulders of senior Dan Spinella. After finishing fourth in the nation in faceoff winning percentage as a sophomore with a Hobart DI season record .618 success rate, he slipped to .517 last season. Spinella enters his final season focused on reclaiming his

sophomore success. First-year Nunzio Doldo could also see

some time at the X to give opponents a change of pace.

The long-stick midfielder duties will be shared by junior Chris Hurley and first-year Alex Caton. Hurley is a good one-on-one defender, while Caton excels on the wing for faceoffs and brings an offensive element that will catch more than one opponent unprepared. Sophomore defenseman Garrett O’Neill could also see some wing time on faceoffs.

deFeNseHobart will go only so far as its defense can

take it. The Statesmen have no concerns about scoring goals, but shutting down the opposition has been a focus in the preseason.

The strength of the close defense rests on the broad shoulders of senior Rafe Mattingly. The best one-on-one defender on the team will also need to be the team’s best leader.

Juniors Ricky Evans and Justin Hager, sophomore Neal Brown, and O’Neill will battle for the right to join Mattingly in the starting lineup. Evans (23 gms) is the most experienced, but was slowed by injuries last season. Hager stepped up his game this year following a monster season on the gridiron that saw him record a conference-best 114 tackles for Hobart.

Likewise, Brown and O’Neill have made great strides in the past year.

First-year Mike O’Brien could trump any of the four. He’s a very physical player, who boasts an imposing presence near the crease.

goalieThe coaching staff will have a decision

to make when it comes to starting goalie. Hobart’s preseason roster features four talented backstops, any one of whom is capable of earning the starting nod.

Sophomore Max Silberlicht played in nine games last season, starting five. His numbers (.496 SV%, 13.27 GAA, 1-3 W-L) are more indicative of his trial by fire experience than his talent level. Silberlicht’s finest performance came in a one-goal win over Fairfield when he produced a season-high 17 saves, including a potential game-tying shot as the final horn sounded. He was one of only three collegians invited to the tryout for Team USA’s U-19 team.

Junior Brad Hester played in five games in ’07, starting one. He had a team-low 10.21 GAA and a 1-1 record. A solid tactician with a surgeon’s skill, Hester has played well in the preseason and is the counterbalance to Silberlicht’s imposing presence and risk-taking flair in the clearing game.

First-year Evan Kirk, younger brother of Jamie, transferred to Hobart after a semester at Adrian (Mich.) College. A product of Salisbury School, he was named to the Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior A All-Star game last summer and earned the Kitchner-Waterloo Braves Best Defensive Player award.

First-year Zach Zayac rounds out the quartet. The native of nearby Cortland is a technically proficient keeper with a great mind for the game.

scheduleHobart’s schedule features a daunting

run through the ECAC gauntlet: Georgetown, Rutgers, Fairfield, Penn State, Massachusetts, St. John’s, and Loyola. The Statesmen will also have showdowns with traditional rivals Bucknell (Feb. 24) and Syracuse (March 25). Hobart will face off with Saint Joseph’s and Presbyterian for the first time, as well as relative newcomers Canisius and Hartford. The Statesmen will wrap up the regular season with the 128th meeting against the Cornell Big Red.

Senior midfielder Sean Murphy will serve as one of four team captains this season.

Senior defenseman Rafe Mattingly is Hobart’s top one-on-one defender.
