In the course of these works, the contractors are removing a substantial amount of old copper wire, which has considerable scrap value. After consultation with the Berth Holders, the Marina owners, Gulf Harbour Marina Ltd, announced this month that all proceeds from the sale of the copper wire will be donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Marina general manager, Doug Black, says the rescue helicopter is a service that the Marina supports every year, and it has been chosen to receive these funds because in the case of a dire emergency, it provides the most direct lifeline for Whangaparaoa Peninsula residents both on land and sea. The Marina upgrade is scheduled to be completed early next month. The first regatta of the season saw a strong performance from members of Wentworth College’s Rowing Club. The strongly contested and highly competitive girls U18 coxed four event comprised six crews from all the top girls rowing schools in Auckland. Westlake Girls High School gained an excellent start, holding a good lead after the first 200 metres. The Wentworth crew, coxed by Alana Pribicevich and stroked by Emma Ryder, with Greer Donovan and Anna Riksen powering the middle of the boat, and Lucy Murden controlling the boat run in the bow seat, pushed back at Westlake through the middle of the race but were unable to fully make up the early lost ground, finishing a close second. The closeness of the race indicates that a very competitive season lies ahead for these crews. The regatta was the first for the new rowers, and all Wentworth’s novice crews managed to safely row the course although there were a number of collisions. Head coach and Wentworth College teacher, Rob Ansell, says that the school’s crews are fortunate to be able to train on the Weiti River, which has excellent sheltered rowing conditions at this time of the year. by Andy DresserIn the last 10 years fishing in NZ has grown in popularity and a lot of this has to do with the use of lures. While this style of fishing has been used in this country before, there is more gear available now that is specifically designed for these techniques making it not only extremely effective form of fishing but also a lot of fun.The reels used are generally smaller but well engineered and both spin (egg beater) and overhead bait caster are loaded with a very thin diameter braid that has no stretch, unlike monofilament. These reels are matched with lightweight, responsive graphite rods that enable the angler to easily work lures through the water. This method of fishing has seen an increase in female anglers because of the lightness of the gear and no smelly bait to deal with. There are two type of lures generally used – the first being soft baits which are made either of a soft biodegradable protein or more durable synthetic rubber which can be enhanced by adding a scent based gel or spray. Soft baits come in a huge range of colours and sizes, all of which can tempt the unsuspecting snapper into a fatal bite.

The other type of lure that has grown massively over the last few years is the Japanese style slow jigs or inchiku jigs. These generally consist of a metal weight that has colours painted onto it and then an ‘assist’ hook that hangs off separately with a squid skirt. These lures are effective when the fish are schooling or actively feeding under birds and dolphins, which is a common sight at this time of year. While one lure can cost up to $20, they will catch a lot of fish and landing your limit on one lure is a common thing.Matched with the new side imaging 3D fish finders acting as the anglers’ sniffer dog, what chance does the poor old snapper have? Maybe technology had to change with fish harder to catch – only the minority were eating fresh fish for tea – but now, with alternative styles of angling, we have maybe evened the playing field. Or perhaps the humble snapper still holds all the cards – there don’t seem to be any less fish out there, but plenty of fishers still end up eating burnt snarlers on the barbie. Andy Dresser, owner of Fishing Direct NZ, is a very active fisherman and member of the Auckland Match Fishing League Team as shown on TV – new series coming.

Club a hub for boatiesI really enjoyed the feedback from my first column last month and a common theme was “what does the Hibiscus Coast Boating Club do?” In the eighties my wife and I bought a holiday home at Stanmore Bay. When we bought our first runabout we acquired an old Nuffield tractor to tow it. In those days traffic was lighter, tractor brakes more reliable, and Highway Patrols did just that. Everything and everybody piled into the boat for the trip down to the boat ramp! We were vaguely aware of the clubhouse on the northern side of the car park, and the white tractor buzzing about launching and retrieving boats, but we didn’t know much about it. Around 36 years ago, a group of keen boaties concerned about the lack of rescue functions on the north side of the peninsula, formed the club. They acquired an old Skyline garage, a donated tractor and an Mac rescue boat. This was the genesis of Hibiscus Rescue that now operates the Sealegs from Stanmore Bay and a RIB from Gulf Harbour in conjunction with Coastguard. Club members used the tractor to launch their boats. As the number of permanent residents grew, the club expanded its facilities and ran regular fishing contests. Wednesday nights became the club night with meals, raffles and jackpots. Living here permanently we soon realised that the subscription to use the club’s tractors was significantly less than the costs of our own tractor – as well as being legal and safer compared to our unregistered, unreliable 60-year-old tractor with dodgy brakes. Tractors are the best option for beach launching. Stanmore Bay sand is very fine and just a little wave action quickly traps vehicles. It is amazing how many cars, Utes and 4WDs end up down to their axles with salt water lapping over the sills. The club’s distinctive blue tractors have been restored and customised by Norm Hatwell, our past Commodore and Life Member. A volunteer team helps Norm maintain “the fleet”. The club was also a pleasant way for us to get to know some locals. It is not just about fishing and boating, but somewhere to catch up on the news, get advice on who to go to for the best products, services, tradies; and of course where the fish are biting. On a sad note, Tony du Toit, who has been the Club’s Bar Manager for 11 years, has decided to retire to his new home at Army Bay. Tony and his wife Lyn have been at the Club for a long time and will be missed.
