1979 saw the creation of a musical ensemble —vocal and instrumental— called

after one of Marc-Antoine Charpentier's more famous works : Les Arts Floris-

sants. William Christie, thefoundingmember of this ensemble, directed their repert-

oire towards 17th. and 18th. century works drawn from the collections in the Biblio-

thèque Nationale (the French National Library). Often these were works which

had never been performed before, and within a very short space of time, "Les Arts

Florissants" was to become known as one of the foremost groups specialising in

baroque music, thereby contributing to the rediscovery of a vast heritage which had

hitherto been disregarded.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier's A c t é o n (Chambord, 1981), Monteverdi's II B a l l o

dé l i e I n g r a t e (Besançon, 1982), Purcell's D i d o a n d A e n e a s (Atelier Lyrique du

Rhin, 1983), Rameau's A n a c r é o n and P y g m a l i o n (Paris, 1983), Charpentier's

M é d é e (Paris, 1984) ; their performances of all these works mark the different

stages in their opera career that was to culminate in their performance ofAtys in

1987. This was taken up again at the Opéra Comique in February, 1989 and then

in New York in May of the same year.

More recently, in July, 1989, they performed Purcell's F a i r y Q u e e n at the Festival

ofAix-en-Provence, in a production by Adrian Noble hailed by press and public

alike as "a major event".

The ensemble is now in demand throughout the world. By the end of1989 they will

have visited the U.S.A., South America, West Germany, Denmark, Finland,

Sweden, Spain, Austria and Yugoslavia.

William Christie was born in the United States in 1944. He took his first music

lessons with his mother, then went on to study piano, organ and harpsichord.

In 1966 he gained a diploma in art history at Harvard. From 1966 -'70 he

undertook a period of further study at Yale : harpsichord with Ralph Kirkpatrick,

musicology and organ studies. He was subsequently appointed musical director of

the Collegium Musical of Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

From 1971 onwards he has been based in Europe. In 1972 he made his first record

for the ORTF; he also worked closely with Geneviève Thibault de Chambure

(Société de Musique d'Autrefois, Paris) continuing in the meantime his

harpsichord studies with Kenneth Gilbert and David Fuller. He has given

harpsichord recitals in all the major Europeanfestivals, and h as made about thirty

records either in his capacity as a soloist (Rameau, A.L. Couperin, F. Couperin,

J. C.F.Fischer, Gaspard Leroux, Pancrace Rayer etc.) or as harpsichordist with the

Concerto Vocale.

William Christie is the founder of "Les Arts Florissants", a vocal and instr-

umental ensemble considered nowadays to be one of the best in existence for baroque

music. From 1978 to 1983 he was a teacher at the Innsbruck Sommer-Akademie

fur Alte Musik. 1982 saw his appointment to the Conservatoire National

Supérieur de Musique in Paris ; he was the first American to hold this honour.

William Christie's worldwide reputation resides not only in his career as a harpsi-

chordist but also as a specialist of French and Italian baroque music. His contr-

ibution to the renaissance of vocal techniques originating in the 17th. and 18 th.

centuries cannot be overestimated.
