    1. Meeting Summary

    Hi Jazz Guitar Fans,

For some reason, or strange fluke, everyone decide to stay at home en mass.Consequently, the sum total of attendees at the meeting numbered a staggeringseven! Will the May meeting go down in society history as the poorest attended? Please let us try to avoid a repeat of this. Remember the old American adage what

    you dont use you lose!

It must be said, however,, that those who were there soldiered on and playing,to an audience of four or five, was certainly good practice for playing jazz gigs!!

As usual, stalwart Tom Prior started the evening off with Stars Fell onAlabama. He told us that this corny tune, like Polka Dots and Moonbeams, had awful

lyrics. He did not tell us, however, that it had also been a vehicle for jazzmasterpieces from the likes of John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Stan Getz.Toms trademark fills, with chromatic slides, tremolos and the like, were all to the fore!

He was then joined by Ian Wroe for the quirky blues, Blue Monk. There seemed tobe a little uncertainty about who was playing the head, Ian on the first and Tom on thelast.

Robin Thomas was up next or Makin Whoopeein his usual Kessel inspired

style of single-line, interspersed with block chords. This also featured a nice endingof chromatic substitutes for a I, VI, II, V turnaround. Out of Nowherefollowed in asimilar style. Well played, with a few rhythmic anomalies; his sense of internalisedtime (in his mind) was sometimes at odds with the more rubato style of his playing.

It was good to seeBulldogsHayden Minette, replete with a beautiful blondeHeritage Golden Eagle. Hayden rarely has time to support us. Coincidentally, another newcomer, bassist Paul Chamberlain, also made an appearance which wasgreat as we would have been down to five regulars. It is a shame, however, thatthese newcomers chose to come on our worst attended night ever. Hayden andAdrian Ingram played Autumn Leavesand Satin Dollleading us nicely into a break

    and raffle.

Chloe, who some of you may remember from a previous session, appearedafter the break, thankfully swelling the numbers, and, after asking Ian if he could help

with her interpretation, sang Bewitched, Bothered and Bewilderedto Ians 7 stringaccompaniment.

Next up was Adam, who was joined by Adrian and Ian for renditions ofMistyand Watermelon Man

    Tuesday 3rd June

Pat McCarthy and Pat Sprakes.Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Society is pleased to present a concert by guitarists Pat

McCarthy and Pat Sprakes. Two amazing players who have performed with some ofthe countries jazz elite.

Pat Sprakes has been a professional jazz guitarist for 20years. He has worked with Tony Kofi (he and Tony cut theirjazz teeth together in Nottingham in the early 90s), DariusBrubeck (who chose him to work with his quartet following achance meeting), Jim Mullen (who exclaimed "I wouldn't haveagreed to a duo with him if I'd know he'd blow me away!"),Phil Robson, Alan Barnes, Pat McCarthy, the list goes on.

Pat cites his main influences as Wes Montgomery, GeorgeBenson, Joe Pass, Bireli Lagrene, Larry Carlton, LeeRitenour and GrantGreen.Pat's love of

harmony allows him to create lush chords andthoughtfully crafted solos, with the emphasis ondynamic, tone and telling a story.

Pat McCarthy is widely regarded as one of thecountry's leading jazz guitar players and has been a

popular choice as guest or sideman with manybands, including The John Warren Project (featuringKenny Wheeler and Andy Sheppard), Pete King,The Jamil Sheriff Octet, Alan Barnes, Jamie Cullum,Jim Mullen, Art Van Damme, Dave Newton, DaveGreen, Tina May and Nikki Iles to name but a few.

Early inspiration came from listening to the recordings of Wes Montgomery, Barney Kesseland Django Reinhardt and he remains a champion of the pure, classic jazz guitar sound. Heis a composer and arranger, with commissioned works and music for film and television tohis credit. Pat is also active in jazz education.

The evening will also feature opportunities for members to perform and the concert will beopen to the general public so spread the word.

    3. Swap an Idea

This column appears to be popular so we will keep it for the time being. But,and this is an important butwe do NEED YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS for this to besuccessful. Contributions please [email protected].

This month we have contributions from Adan and Darren.

    My Conti ExperiencePart 2

Roberts Contis The Chord Melody Assembly Line is like nothing I have seen before.

Although there are many books on composing your own chord melodies (many of which I own)

this one gets you started in using what you learn from the beginning.

The assembly line is the first of two books. The assembly line gets you playing chord melodies

using the stock chords and melody notes of a tune. While the companion book The Formulafollows on by taking you deeper into the subject, into the world of re-harmonisation.

These ideas and tools in the Formula are based on revelations Robert Conti had while listening

to his heroes Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson. He began to see patterns; or formulas if you will.

Many of these ideas come from cycle of fifth movements and tri-tone substitutions, amongst

    other discoveries.

    The chord melody assembly line

After a short period of time with this book I was able to see notes on a music stave, read thechords from the real book sheet and quickly put together a very simple chord melody. This book

is based on a very simple methodology to get you started.

How the book works is by learning in organised chord families. For instance if the stock chord is

a C major and the melody note is an E you will play a chord, a C chord with an E melody note on

top for instance C major 7.Below is a sample from the book showing different C majors, with

    different melody notes on top.

Notes above are notated at true pitch, an octave lower than is customary for guitar.

There are different families of chords (major, minor, dominant, diminished) each with chord grips

that each put a different melody note on top. It is quite easy to get going and in fact before I

finished the book I posted a chord melody of On the street where you live from My fair lady

    which is linked below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Miv0tTkPO4On the street where you live

There is an accompanying four hour DVD to guide you through the segments.Conti likes these long DVDsand they're actually my favourite part as well. Having auditory

explanations on DVD is particularly useful as these books often involve theory. However as

always with Conti, the emphasis is onplayingor "getting it under your hands" as he likes to say.

If you simply want to play some of Roberts arrangement he also has eight books of

arrangements. It is helpful to have tried these before approaching the method books as they are

the Nuts and Bolts of how he reached these arrangements.

His arrangements are laid out in the same way as the assembly line example.Usually there are

options so you can choose the chords you like the sound of or find easiest.

Although Robert Conti teaches you to play his solos or arrangements on the DVDs he tells you

many times that nothing is set in stone and that jazz is an improvisational art form that keeps

evolving as you learn. For me I know this is a starting point, a beginning of a new direction in my

musical journey. The key thing to learning is figure new ways to reinvent and use an idea in your

own way. Eventually you do this on the spot and this is the essence of improvisation.

Conti has a good way of keeping things simple and hed boil this down to one word

    The Coltrane Changes (Part three.)

I particularly enjoyed reading Adrians take on the Coltrane changes last week and I urge everyone

to study and use this particular idea as a turnaround. In response this month Im offering up yetanother use/approach for this concept.

If you read my initial article in the March newsletter I demonstrated how it is possible to approach aii V I progression by way of a series of substitutions to create a whole new harmonic pathway toarrive at chord I.

If this seems unfamiliar then have a look at the March newsletter which describes how to reach thispoint in detail. There are many references on line which outline this concept and are worth readingand if I may humbly recommend my own website www.guitarbytes.co.uk youll find video lessonsdemonstrating how this can sound.

Melodically it is possible to outline the Coltrane changes by way of arpeggios, chord tones andappropriate scale choices and to superimpose this over a regular ii V I. Players such as DavidLiebman use the idea to great effect.

Satin Doll is a tune familiar to most.

The harmonic sequence is based on a number of ii V chords through a series of tonal centres;Dm7 and G7 are in C major. Em7 and A7 are in D. The following part of the sequence is D7, Db7 andCma7. This is essentially a ii V I progression, Dm7, G7 and Cma7 with a tritone substitution on theG7 giving Db7 and a chord quality substitution on Dm7 giving D7. Here it is possible to use aneffective lick based around the Coltrane changes.

This lick can be used over any ii V I progression and gives quite an outside sound but can be veryeffective. As with all licks learn in all keys and practice using it in as many progressions as possible. Here is the lick used in solo that fits over Satin Doll.!

The Gibson L-7 is very nice and was owned by USA bluesman Duke Robillard, looking for 2250.

The Abbott Victor Burlington is a fab piece of British guitar history. Ebony neck plays better than almostanything. Made in 1940s, may have been started beforeWWII and finished off after, according to

Frank Cambridge. So rare that I cant find another one to compare for valuation, but Id like 1500 for

    it.

The Gibson BR 9 amp is late 1940s, last time I played through it I was not awestruck so it maybe needs

a bit of a look at, it used to sound Golden - so maybe needs a valve or a bit of know how ? 300 as it is.

For all amp (valve and solid state)

    and effect pedal repairs.

Also for the collector a J.G.Abbott senior 1928ish, round sound hole archtop, quite like the Gibson L-3 or

L-4 of the late 20s, light as a feather, very nice plectrum guitar, again too rare to find a value but Id

like to think 900 would be fair.

Anyone interested can call me on

    Thanks, Andrew.
