^ A note about high number of mortalities: Surveillance staff examined West Virginia death records from 1980-2000for completeness of HIV/AIDS surveillance. Review of the primary cause of death from the 365,725 records pro-vided by the Vital Registration Office yielded 47 previously unknown potential cases of HIV infection. Of these 47 cases,12 had AIDS related causes of death..
