History of the Stellenbosch Hiking Club

1 The founding and growth of the club

The Stellenbosch Hiking Club came into being when, at her initiative, thirty interested persons

met at Sona Buys’s home on 7 March 1985. It was decided to send out letters of invitation to a

few prospective members to join an inaugural hike on 16 March at Boegoekloof near Villiersdorp.

A committee was selected with Sona Buys as Chairperson. The other members of the committee

were Dr. Johan Buys (Deputy Chairperson), Mrs. Rina Esterhuizen, Mr. Johan Briedenhann

(Sekretaris), Mmes. Louie Stander and Frances Kuhn. The committee met every month and

decided to organize on dah hike every month. After having done three hikes a hiker could apply

for membership. Annual membership fees were fixed at R15 per member and a further R2 (for

members) or R3 (for non-members) had to be paid for each hike.

During its first year the club undertook 14 hikes with 504 persons partaking, i.e. an average of 36

per hike. At the end of the first year there were 30 members and the annual social event was

held at the mountain hut on Stevie Smit’s farm, Koopmanskloof. The club also had the tradition

of having an annual Spring Hike in Jonkershoek. Those years the meeting point before each hike

was at the Burgerhuis on the Braak. Reports on the hikes appeared regularly in Eikestadnuus, as

shown below.

When the club membership reached 100 in 1989, it was celebrated as is described as reported in

the Eikestadnuus reports shown below.

A popular hike was the Top of the Vinyards route (Wingerdkruinroete) as reported in the

Eikestadnuus.

The Annual General Meeting was usually preceded by a hike, as detailed in another Eikestadnuus

report from 1989.

It is clear from these newspaper cuttings that the club committee at that stage was socially very

active and keen on publicity. Their meetings were held in a good spirit and the minutes were at

first handwritten in a hefty minute book and later typewritten copies were pasted in the book.

The above newspaper cuttings were also pasted in the book.

Following the initial meteoric growth, the membership stabilised and even went down to lower

levels. This is evident from the following graph which is based on data obtained from the minutes.

No data were available for the period between 1998 and 2003.

2. Club activities

Through the years the main business of the club has been to hike, as is explained on its website:

“There are so many wonderful places to hike in the Western Cape and Southern Africa. Up

mountains, in valleys, down rivers, along the sea, in the desert, so much to see! We enjoy the

exercise, the good conversations, the interesting people we meet, the adventure and the fresh

air.”

Inspired by this, the club organizes day hikes every weekend whenever possible. As a result, there

have been approximately 780 hikes in the period from 1985 to 2013 an average of 30 annually.

As can be seen from the figure below, Table Mountain has been the most popular destination;

during this period almost 13% of all hikes took place somewhere on Table Mountain. At one

stage, typically 1996, it was the custom to have an annual moonlight meal on top of Table

Mountain, with the option of a restaurant dinner ascending along the Platteklip route and down

by cable car. Walks in other parts of the Cape Peninsula have also been favourites with 11% of all

hikes (Silver Mine, Cape Town, Hout Bay, etc.). Predictably hikes in Jonkershoek (8%) and

elsewhere in Stellenbosch district (6%: Simonsberg, Botmaskop and Stellenbosch Mountain,

etc.). A further interesting social custom was “potjiekos” at Christmas Camp during the hike on

Paarl Mountain (typically 1990). The following figure shows the most popular hikes.

Apart from the day hikes there are also some longer weekend outings on the year programme.

It is clear from above graph that the Cedar Mountains is a popular destination. Other popular

longer hikes include Arangieskop (near Worcester), Pearly Beach and hikes along the West Coast.

Adventurous hiking trips were undertaken in 1994 to Metzi-Metzi near the Kruger Game Reserve

and in 1979 to Okavango and the Victoria Falls.

3 Committee members

As already mentioned, the club was started in 1985 on initiative of Sona Buys. After serving as

chairperson for 18 years, she resigned in 2000. She received honorary membership. The honorary

A competition was launched by the committee in 1997 for the best design of a club emblem. The

winning design, by Elizabeth Rohwer, was adopted in 1999 and has been used as letterhead and

as badge on rucksacks and is shown below.
