    BASIC FACTS

    The Visayas is at the center of the Philippines and

    is divided into 3 regions, namely Western Visayas

    (Region VI), Central Visayas (Region VII) and

    Eastern Visayas (Region VIII). . The main islandsare Samar, Panay, Negros, Cebu and Leyte, the

    latter famous as the island first sighted by the

    Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the 16th

    century and as the landing point for the Americanliberation forces in 1944. Samar and Leyte are

    linked by the San Juanico Bridge, the longest in

    the country.

    Its strategic location makes it a vitaleconomic and political link between thecountrys two main islands of Luzon and

    Mindanao. Visayas has relatively modernsocial and infrastructure facilities. It has alsolarge agricultural areas that are appropriatefor the cultivation of traditional and non-traditional high value crops. It also produces

    a significant amount of products for bothdomestic consumption and exports. Its richnatural resources likewise make this group ofislands a popular tourist destination.

    Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, is

    the Twin Lakes of Balinsasayao. This

    place is where you will find two lakes

    Another beautiful place in Negros

    Oriental...the Pulang Bato Falls.. PulangBato is the place of red rocks. Many come

    just to bath in these waters for medicinalreasons. Bamboo tubes protrude from the

    rocks in certain spots, delivering thehealing mineral waters to bathers. Theentire region is rife with volcanic steamvents and sulfuric mud slides.

    The regions sea and inland waters are rich sources

    of salt and fresh water fish and other marine

    products. It is one of the fish exporting regions of

    the country.

    There are substantial forest reserves in theinteriors of the islands. Its mineral deposits include

    chromite, nickel, clay, coal, limestone, pyrite and

    sand and gravel.

    Western Visayas is one of the richest regions in the

    country in terms of natural resources. Its forestshowever have been denuded due to indiscriminate

    logging. Its waters abound with numerous species of fish

    and other marine products. Mineral resources include

    copper, gold, silver, clay, limestone, coal, sand and graveland other non-metallic.

    It is a key fisheries development area, with its 84 coastal

    municipalities, eight major fishing grounds, inland

    bodies of water and 43,050 hectares of fishponds.

    The land used for farming in the region isnot as big as the other regions. Aside from

    palay, the farmers also plant corn,

    sugarcane, abaca, coconut, tobacco and rootcrops. They also subsist on fishing because

    most islands are surrounded by water.
