United Beyond Marijuana June is Pride Month, a time to commemorate members of the LGBTQ+ community for their efforts and sacrifices for constantly pushing for progress in the face of adversity. At the Apothecarium, we believe that it is our duty to be an ally to members of the LGBTQ+ community. Marijuana has been an aid for members of the LGBTQ+ long before it has been medically legal. Our goal is to help all patients, regardless of their beliefs and orientations, to help them find the best solutions for their ailments. In this month’s edition of the retail magazine, we look at a historical moment in marijuana, product recommendations, frequently asked questions, and some cooking recipes.

Dennis Peron was a cannabis and gay rights activist who is often considered the father of medical marijuana. Peron fought for the passage of Proposition P, which argued for San Francisco residents to use medical marijuana without being criminalized. Gathering enough signatures, Proposition P was put on the citywide ballot. It passed with an 80% approval vote. Additionally, Peron co-authored Proposition 215, an act that allowed doctors to recommend marijuana to patients. Proposition 215 passed with a 55-45% vote, causing a major shift in marijuana policy.

Prior to helping pass Proposition 215, Peron and several other people founded the San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club. The San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club is considered the first medical dispensary in the United States. Due to medical marijuana being illegal when the Buyers Club was first founded, Peron dealt with frequent violence and harassment. He was arrested several times and once shot in the leg by a San Francisco police officer.

Historical Moments in Medical Marijuana

Many of the patients who went to the San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club were AIDS patients that used marijuana to help with the nausea from their AIDS treatment. The AIDS crisis directly impacted Peron as his partner Jonathan West died from AIDS in 1990.

“At that point, I didn’t know what I was living for. I was the loneliest guy in America,” Peron said in an interview with the LA Times in 1996. “In my pain, I decided to leave Jonathan a legacy of love. I made it my moral pursuit to let everyone know about Jonathan’s life, his death, and his use of marijuana and how it gave him dignity in his final days.”

?Patient FAQ These are some of the more common questions we get from experienced patients:

Do all marijuana products give that “high” feeling?

Not all marijuana products give that psychoactive feeling often associated with marijuana. Various products such as localized topicals do not have psychoactive effects. Additionally, CBD can counteract the psychoactive effects THC can potentially produce. Lastly, THC consumed at a patient’s therapeutic level can produce medical benefits but no psychoactive feeling.

I feel like marijuana makes me lazy and slow. Is that true?

Millions of patients each day use marijuana to help them. Each person has various reactions to consuming marijuana based on their unique endocannabinoid system. Therefore, it is not fair to assume that effects of marijuana are the same for each person.

Can you overdose on marijuana?

It is impossible to overdose on marijuana. However, it is possible to overmedicate on marijuana. Overmedicating is when a patient consumes too much marijuana for their therapeutic level. Symptoms of overmedicating are anxiety, confusion, and perspiration. Thus, it’s always critical to track your dosage and take it slow to start.
