Disney’s Newsies is a block-buster!
Saturday, December 9 at Phoenix Theatre
Reception starts at 12:30
Matinee starts at 2:00
Time is running out to purchase your tickets.
Please join the Historical League On Saturday, December 9 for a
reception and a professional stage production of Disney’s Newsies,
a musical based on the New York City newsboy strike of 1899.
The festivities will start at 12:30
in the theatre atrium, with
complimentary light refreshments
and no-host bar. There will be a
raffle for children, featuring a
Mercedes Benz pedal car, an
American Girl Doll, and several
interactive toys. Raffle items for
adults include a set of three pillows
from Cornelia Parke, a copper and
turquoise Nambé bowl, and, of
course, the wine raffle, being
organized by Dianne Linthicum and
Pam den Draak. New this year is a
50/50 raffle and a Silent Auction
featuring six different trips put
together by Winspire.
To purchase your tickets, go to the home page of our website:
www.HistoricalLeague.org. Click on the link “purchase tickets.”
You may also order by calling the Phoenix Theatre at 602 254-
2151, but you must say you are purchasing tickets for the
Historical League benefit performance. The League will only get
credit for the sale of tickets purchased before Nov. 17. Ticket
prices are $75 and $95.
Raffle tickets are on sale. You do not need to be present to win.
Tickets are two for $10, six for $20, or twenty for $40. As the
reception time is short, we recommend that you order your raffle
tickets in advance by completing the form on page 8 and mailing
it and a check to Mary McMahon, 3185 E. Marlette Avenue,
Phoenix, 85016. Your raffle tickets will then be waiting for you to
pick up at the theater.
Bonnie Newhoff and her committee are planning several
delicious sweet and savory party treats. You all know what great
cooks/bakers League members are! Any who are willing to
contribute to this effort please contact Bonnie at 602 739-1299.
The Holidays are a traditional time to think of helping others. In
addition to raising much needed funds for the AZ Heritage
Center, our Family Holiday party also offers the opportunity to
donate tickets to some deserving children. The League has
partnered with Audrey Johnson Theatre Foundation which
“matches” donated theatre tickets with local children’s charities.
Generous League members donated 50 tickets last year. If you
cannot attend our Family Holiday Party, donating tickets is a
great way to support the event. Donated tickets cannot be
purchased online. Please send a check payable to Phoenix
Theatre to the following address: Historical League, Inc., 115
East Country Club Drive, Phoenix AZ 85014 for the number of
donated tickets you wish to purchase.
Our Family Holiday Party is the only League fundraising event
planned for the rest of 2017. Please help the League fulfill our
central mission of supporting the Heritage Center by purchasing
or donating Disney Newsies tickets. It is a very entertaining event
for family and friends of all ages!
The two productions the League has sponsored at Phoenix
Theatre have been enjoyed immensely by other League
members and their families and friends. Both have been
memorable afternoons of getting together to kick off the holiday
season with each other while enjoying spectacular theatre.
Do not miss out this year. Order your tickets today!

January Claire C. Carter is Curator of Contemporary
Art at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
where she has curated visual art, architecture and design
since 2007. Claire will present an overview Repositioning
Paolo Soleri: The City Is Nature, the retrospective of
seminal American artist and architect Paolo Soleri
(1919 – 2013) she curated at the Scottsdale Museum of
Contemporary Art.
February Joan Fudala has been a full-time Scottsdale
community historian since 1999, and is the author of seven
books as well as hundreds of feature articles about
Scottsdale’s history. Joan will present “The Arizona
Craftsmen: Catalyst for Scottsdale’s Post-World War II Cultural
Cachet.” Flash back to late 1940s Scottsdale and learn –
through a photo-rich presentation – about the artisans who
helped brand Scottsdale as the arts, crafts and fashion capital
of the Southwest. Working from a re-purposed General Store
on Main Street, artists like Lloyd Kiva, Lew Davis, Mathilde
Schaefer Davis, Sandy Sanderson and others gained national acclaim for their
work and for their adopted home town.

Historymakers Recognition
Program, is pictured at the left with
League Programs Chair, Diana
Smith. Pat shared “behind the
scenes” stories and pictures of each
of the 2017 Historymakers
honorees at the September
meeting. All of the Historymakers provide a wealth of stories and photographs,
but not all of them can be used in the Gala program or exhibit.
October
Rancher, cowboy and
entrepreneur, H. Alan Day,
entertained the League in
October, with stories of his 35
years ranching and “cowboying”
on his 200,000 acre Lazy B cattle
ranch in southeastern Arizona.
Advance copies of his book,
Cowboy Up! Lessons from the Lazy B, were available for purchase and
autographing. His co-author, Lynn Wiese Sneyd, also attended and autographed
books.
Alan is shown above with two of the League’s rancher gals, Cindy Tidwell-Shelton

Bullion Plaza Cultural Center
A message from President Nina Filippi
Luckily, I found a roomy spot with plenty of seating,
so if anyone would like to bring a few giant reindeer,
a life-sized Nativity, along with 22 wreaths, please, be
my guest. I admit we may be short on many of those
amazing pieces. However, this year we will focus on
the delectable food, our amazing friends, and the
blessings we have. Mary Garbaciak, Hospitality
Chair, will be delighted to have you sign up to bring a dish, maybe
even a few from the fabulous new dishes from the Tastes and
Treasures Vol II. Reservations are necessary.
Speaking of which, the outstanding Chairs, Leslie Christiansen,
Linda Corderman, Ruth McLeod and Cathy Shumard will be
enthusiastically introducing this new edition very shortly. I can hardly
wait to see the final copy after many months, days, and hours of
work to produce a product that the League will be honored to pro-
mote and distribute. T&T II, will need us all to collaborate in order to
make this our major fundraiser in the not so distant future. This is an
exciting opportunity for us to come together to be a part of some-
thing BIG, once the book is published. I have been thinking of venues
to market the book. A store near my home, where they have a little
bit of everything Arizona for all their breakfast and lunch customers,
real estate offices where there are hundreds of agents and hundreds
of clients, the many golf clubs with Pro Shops that have gift items. If
each of us think of one or two places, we can help sell this book; it
will change this effort in ways we don’t even realize. So, do some
brain storming with the Chairs and let’s work together to do our
small or large part in getting this book out and into the hands of the
public for their reading, cooking and gift-giving pleasure.
Sending my best holiday wishes to our wonderful, hard working,
fun-loving and generous membership. I appreciate everything that
each one of you do to support our League in its mission to help the
AZ Heritage Center!

Greetings Members,
It’s hard to believe it’s almost the start of the Holiday Season with
Thanksgiving around the corner. I always look forward to that
day, out of all the holidays. It’s the least complicated, no
shopping, buying gifts, not many decorations. So basically, set
the table, cook the turkey, get the wine, and then ask everyone
else to bring the side dishes and desserts! Sounds easy, right! I’m
blessed to have a wonderful family who are kind enough to clean
up after me. Yes! Always thankful for my smallest blessings.
Our new Publicity Chair, Susan Dale, was hot on the trail of
getting our events in Phoenix Home and Garden Magazine with a
side article of the Footprints Exhibit! Many League members
enjoyed the Frank Lloyd Wright Exhibit Opening, Footprints on
the Desert, on October 12. It was thoughtful, with wonderful
photos, and artifacts and stories. Don’t miss it, in the Heritage
Center lobby, until March 2018. October 18, was the Historical
League (with a little help from our friends) Historymakers Exhibit
Opening. This exhibit is something we can surely be proud of.
Our HM exhibit is handsome, and creative, thanks to the many
minds that produced this work. Pat Faur, Chair, along with many
others had a hand in this wonderful exhibit. Please stop by to
view both outstanding exhibits. Having most of our 2017 HMs
there was a real treat! Congratulations to everyone that helped in
the production, and as members, we are grateful!
The Canyon Lake Cruise on Saturday, November 4, was a
delightful evening. The amazing scenery is something we will
certainly remember! Mary Garbaciak, Event Chair, had this great
idea. It was a charming evening and a great way to begin the
Holiday Season, enjoy nature, see wild life and the awesome
night sky. It can be shared with friends, family and visitors! I can’t
say enough about it!
Our speaker for November was author Carolyn Warner. She
writes books that are her own practical “here’s how to do it.” Her
latest, The Last Word, is a must for me, as I can relate on every
level!
We are all looking forward to seeing the Disney Production of
“NEWSIES,” on Saturday, December 9, 12:30 p.m. at Phoenix
Theatre, when we celebrate our Family Holiday Party. I hope we
have all participated in whatever way we can, by purchasing
tickets, raffle tickets, 50/50 chances, baking or donating food,
wine, raffle items or cash. We greatly appreciate all efforts to
help in our largest and only fundraiser of this 2017 season! The
chairs, Nancy Evans, Dianne Linthicum, Bonnie Newhoff, and
Mary Parker have been working feverishly to make this event a
success. As members it’s up to us to step up and make it happen.
NEW on December 4, we will be having our Holiday Luncheon at
the AZ Heritage Center Lobby, followed by our Membership
Meeting. After 5 years, we need to give our kind and generous
member, Joan Galloway, a much needed respite. She certainly
earned it! Oh, I suddenly realized, who would have all those
tables and chairs for 60 plus members to sit and enjoy the
delicious Potluck Luncheon, surrounded by enchanting holiday
décor?
News from Ventura County Dee Steen spotted this news on Facebook: Megan Gately,
who was at the Tempe museum for several years in the
education department,
and worked as Education
Director/ Volunteer
Coordinator at the
Ventura Museum, is now
moving on to the Reagan
Library in Ventura County.
Congratulations, Megan!

MORE H I S T O R Y M A K E R S G A L A NEWS
A big thank you to all members, museum staff, and CAC board members who attended the 2017 Historymakers Exhibit Opening. The
pictures above show that it was a great event and everyone had a great time. A special thank you goes to members Anne Lupica and
Deb Hester for most of the arrangements; Zona Lorig, who tirelessly edited the exhibit wording; and Susan Dale, who helped with
publicity. Many thanks also go to museum staff of Tawn Downs, Debbie McKinnon, and Ashley Smith, who were so helpful, despite
just finishing the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit and opening the week before. Congratulations go to Chef Mark Vanek who did a great job
with the food and, of course, the staff of Evans Communications, especially Whitney Thistle and Cheyenne Brumlow who did the
graphic design for the exhibit.
Now about the 2019 Historymakers Gala. As you know I am chairing it again. I know many members are concerned about holding the
Gala every two years, instead of three. It seems like a daunting task. However, one of my goals is to put together a schedule and a
process that will make this run smoothly with easy transitions from one Gala Chair to the next. Working with Andrea Evans has been a
pleasure and her knowledge and expertise have been a great learning experience for me. We are working together on a system that
will smooth out the rough spots we encountered with the last Gala. This is a learning experience for all of us.
Diana Smith, Recognition Chair, is in the process of holding meetings with the selection panel to select our new Historymakers. I am
grateful to have her on board to help.
I am putting together a Gala committee, which I will call the steering committee. It will have certain responsibilities, but no specific
duties at first. As the year progresses, I may need members to take on some specific tasks. We will meet every other month through
2018. I am especially looking for members to volunteer for this steering committee who might be interested in chairing the GALA in
the future.
I want to thank all the members who have expressed support for me as the League set out to do something new and daring. I truly
believe in the importance of the Historymakers program and the Gala that has become a part of it. I think honoring Arizonans by
preserving their oral histories, pictures, and memorabilia in the archives of the AZ Heritage Center is a
worthwhile endeavor and it will become even more valuable for the future.
I look forward to your support this coming year!

Arizona history and favorite recipes are coming together
in Tastes & Treasures II, A Storytelling Cookbook of
Historic Arizona. Thanks to the many volunteers on the
cookbook committee for making this book a reality. We
had hoped to have it published by December, but due to
printing delays, we find that it won’t be available until
January 15. If you were one of the many who purchased
the book through pre-orders, we have cookbook
postcards that could be used to write, “Your gift is coming . . .” The postcards are great to carry in
your purse. When someone asks you, “What’s new?” tell them about this new project and share
your love of Arizona, history, and good food.
With 35 people pre-ordering a box of ten books, we have sold $8400 in
books. Thanks to Norma Jean Coulter for chairing this position, creating a
detailed spread sheet, and handling the checks. Pre-sale customers will be
the first to receive the book.
To date, we have raised over $27,000 in support of Tastes & Treasures II. It is thrilling to report this major milestone
and we are so grateful for all the donors of the Acknowledgment page, Tribute pages, as well as front and back
cover sponsors. You have believed in this book and we hope you will be pleased with the finished product.
When the book arrives, we will be having “Pallet Parties” at the museum. This will be to inventory as well as
socialize, talk about recipes, special events, stores, and other potential venues for the new book. Did I
mention lunch was involved? We love to try out the new recipes, so sign up to participate. Remember how
great all those “Tasting Parties” were? Thanks to so many who signed up to test recipes.
Not even printed and we have had orders on the website. YES . . . you can purchase the book now at
www.HistoricalLeague.org Go to STORE. Thanks to Sharron McKinney for taking on the role of website
mailing chair for Volume II.
Featuring stories and recipes from 24 historic restaurants in Tastes & Treasures II, we are grateful
to Jolene Beard for working with these venues to make sure they get copies of the book right away
for their patrons.
Cookbook committee volunteers presented merchandise at the wonderful
2017 Historymakers Exhibit Opening, and sold Tastes & Treasures Volumes I
and II, aprons and Soleri bells. Thanks to Claire Nullmeyer, Cindy Tidwell-
Shelton, Donna Esposito, Clede Gorrell, and Norma Jean Coulter. Dancing Chef catering featured Cream Puffs from
The Spicery in Our 1895 Home, and All-American Brownies from Terrie Sanford’s tribute page. These delicious treats
were made by Bonnie Newhoff, Julie Moore, Sharron McKinney, Jolene Beard, Mariamne Moore, and Norma Jean
Coulter. Special thanks to Cathy Shumard for organizing it all.
Join us at other event possibilities in the spring to promote the cookbook, the Historical League, Historymakers and
AZ Heritage Center. We are looking into participating at Tucson Festival of Books, Devour at Desert Botanical Gardens, Desert Mt. Golf
Course luncheon, Assistance League of East Valley luncheon, AZ History Convention and historic home tours.

What an exciting fall we've had so far! On
October 12, we opened our new
exhibit, Footprints On The Desert: Frank Lloyd
Wright in Arizona, the culmination of more than
a year of planning. The event drew a large
crowd, as Scottsdale Vice-Mayor, Virginia Korte,
and Stuart Graff, President and CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright
Foundation, joined me in the ribbon cutting ceremony. Vernon
Swaback, renowned architect and former Frank Lloyd Wright
School of Architecture student delivered a riveting keynote
address. We are pleased to present this exhibit in partnership with
the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Scottsdale Public Library and
Tempe History Museum. Many thanks to our numerous sponsors,
including our title sponsor, U-Haul, and our other
contributing sponsors, AZ Humanities, Institute of Museum and
Library Services, and, of course, the Historical League.
And as you know, the following week we were proud to open the
Historical League Historymakers 2017 exhibit to a full house. What
a pleasure to see all but one of our honored Historymakers in
attendance with their families. This is a wonderful tribute to a
group of people who have made such a lasting impact on Arizona.
Congratulations to all the honorees! Congratulations to the
Historical League for a beautiful exhibit, and a great evening! We
have been hard at work planning many interesting and
diverse lectures and discussions for the coming months, and the
spring calendar is already filling up as well. We hope you will make
time in your busy schedules to join us for some (or all!) of these
informative discussions. A
calendar of November and some
December events is shown below.
Check our website or
Facebook for more details.
Update on our building stucco
repair: after many weeks of
delays, construction has begun.
The removal of damaged stucco
is complete, and the re-stucco
work begins next week. The
project will take several weeks to
complete. Many thanks to our
Central Division Board and the
Historical League for their
assistance in securing
additional funding to cover the
gap beyond what is covered by
Risk Management.
We look forward to seeing you
soon, and hope you will share
our news and events with your friends and neighbors, and invite
them to visit.

Historical League Tours The January tour will be to the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMOCA) on January 11, 2018. The curators will give us a
tour from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
There are two exhibitions being shown at this time. One is “Repositioning Paolo Soleri: The City is Nature” and the other is “Marking
the Infinite: Contemporary Women Artists from Aboriginal Australia.“
After the tour we will walk to Los Olivos for lunch. We can order from their regular lunch menu.
The cost for the trip will be $25. We can take 25-30 people. SMOCA is located at the Scottsdale Civic Center, 7374 E. Second Street,
Scottsdale, AZ.
This tour has been organized by Katie Tovar.
On September 24, Ruth McLeod arranged for the League to have a tour at Roswell Bookbinding.
Mike Roswell does more than bind books. He restores old, torn, abused books that become
heirlooms for families. He creates inventive packaging. He designs unique style books and amazing
large format books. Mike was a major sponsor for our Historymaker Centennial book providing the
beautiful leather binding with the copper embossed title. He has contributed to Tastes & Treasures,
Volume II, A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona with a delicious posole recipe and memories
of his family. And the cookbooks will be bound and stored at Roswell Bookbinding. We have a very
supportive partner in our new cookbook and we are very grateful.
With the informative tour of Roswell Bookbindery filling our heads, members of the
September Historical League tour headed to St. Mary’s Foodbank Community Kitchen for
lunch and relaxation. The meals were prepared by the students in the Community Kitchen
program, which offers a 12-week culinary training program aimed at giving students a
second chance in life by providing all of the skills necessary to be successful in the food
service industry.

will be deeded to the AZ Heritage Center archives!
We are looking for agendas and minutes from membership
meetings, board of directors’ meetings, special events including
Historymakers Gala and Recognition programs, Children’s Holiday
Parties, and one-time events. Annual reports should be included
from board officers, standing committees, nominating
committees, and ad hoc committees.
Please include membership directories, Old Ned Newsletters and
other newspaper articles; special event invitation and programs;
and photographs, preferably with identifications and dates.
The date has been extended – please bring materials by

On Saturday, November 4, Mary Garbaciak organized a
beautiful water cruise through Canyon Lake on Steamboat
Dolly, that took us where there were no roads. We boarded a
bus at the AZ Heritage Center, driven by our favorite driver, Chris.
After boarding Dolly and getting underway, our guide told us about the geology
of the canyon and pointed out quite a few mountain goats. Libations, dinner
onboard, and a trip back to the dock, with soft background music all added to
the enjoyment of the evening.
To top off a fun evening, Rochelle Bee, a guest of League member, Patti Goss,
joined the League on the bus ride back to the Heritage center.

Lisa Schnebly-Heidinger featured in AZ Highways
Author Lisa Schnebly-Heidinger has a personal connection to
Sedona. Her great-grandmother was Sedona Schnebly. Having
authored several books about Arizona topics, Lisa is helping
write about the historic venues in Tastes & Treasures II. She is
featured in the November issue of Arizona Highways. Look for
an article about Lisa on page 3, and her
article, “A Woman by the Name of
Sedona” on pages 48 and 49. With her
fantastic knowledge of Arizona and her amazing skills in
writing, the Historical League is fortunate to have Lisa as a
member. She is scheduled to speak to the League and
interested guests, in April about her grandmother, Sedona
Schnebly. Her latest book is The Journal of Sedona
Schnebly.
