DESTINATION GERMANY
Germany is a destination of many facets
and is particularly popular with international
travellers in search of culture. People come
from all over the world to enjoy the wealth
of culture on offer in Berlin, Munich, Ham-
burg, Cologne and Germany’s many other
cosmopolitan cities. Each one has retained
its own unique character: Hamburg scores
highly for its seafaring charm, Düsseldorf for
its exclusive fashion, Leipzig for its vibrant
musical heritage. Internationally acclaimed
museums – from the Pergamon in Berlin to
the Pinakothek in Munich – regularly mount
outstanding exhibitions that make the world
sit up and take notice.
Germany also leads the way when it comes
to music: the country is home to more than
100 classical concert halls. Fans of more
modern sounds will love the wide choice of
festivals.
The quintessential German gemütlichkeit is
best experienced in the smaller historical
towns. Beautifully preserved old quarters
such as in Bamberg and Lübeck, romantic
destinations such as Würzburg with its
Residenz Palace, Potsdam with its palaces
and parks and Trier with its Roman monu-
ments all now enjoy UNESCO World Heritage
status – and prove that history in Germany
is anything but dry and dusty. There are
modern boutiques set in medieval houses,
cafés for whiling away the hours and narrow
winding lanes for leisurely strolls.
Nature lovers can look forward to more than
14 national parks in Germany. Long-distance
cycle routes and walking trails enable active
holidaymakers to tour beautiful unspoilt
landscapes and offer an incomparable way
to experience nature’s rich bounty.
German cuisine is all about variety and
quality. There is something for all tastes and
budgets, from traditional inns serving hearty
fare to more than 200 Michelin-starred
restaurants. A glass of wine from one of the
13 winegrowing regions? That’s the way to
round off a memorable day in Germany!
Germany is easy to get to as well: more than
100 international airlines fly to Germany,
which has the most extensive network of
airports anywhere in the world. The route
network of Star Alliance links Germany with
a total of 795 destinations around the globe.

Top 100 is the name of a mobile app from
the German National Tourist Board (GNTB)
which visitors can use to discover – and
vote on – Germany’s top 100 sights. In 2012
the GNTB began conducting an annual
survey among travellers in Destination
Germany to find out what they considered
to be their personal highlights. Tourist
attractions in all 16 federal states are
included in the current Top 100. Overall,
survey respondents have selected a wide
spectrum of cultural and natural highlights
throughout Germany.
But that is not all the Top 100 has to offer.
The mobile app for Android and iOS devices
enables travellers to use their mobile devices
to call up a wealth of information in English
or German about the places they visit – and
to interact with their friends quickly and
easily via Facebook. In addition, users receive
up-to-the-minute news about Destination
Germany and can get money off at vari-
ous sights thanks to the mobile discount
vouchers. By launching the app, the GNTB is
stepping up its interaction with visitors to
Germany and raising the country’s profile
as a travel destination around the world.
New application featured on all GNTB Facebook pages
To accompany the app, the rankings of
the tourist sights are shown on all of the
GNTB’s Facebook pages in real time. The
sights are listed in descending order and
are continuously updated as people check
in to them on Facebook Places. Users can
also post comments or recommendations,
and Facebook makes it quick and easy to
share the app content with friends.
Strong global demand
The new interactive tool is proving popular,
with around 3,000 downloads of the Top
100 app in the first week after its launch.
Most of the users outside Germany were
located in China, followed by the United
States and Japan in second place. The app
also appeared in the App Store’s ‘New &
Noteworthy’ list, which features the latest
and most interesting apps as selected by
editors at Apple.
Download the app at www.germany.travelThe official GNTB website contains a page
dedicated to the sights in the ranking and
makes the app available as a free down-
load: www.germany.travel/top100

Calling all romantics: Heidelberg Castle voted the top sight in 2012With its history, architecture and unique location overlooking the city, Heidelberg
Castle is one of the most famous historical monuments in the world. The ruins rise
majestically on the site of a medieval castle complex high above the narrow lanes
and picturesque jumble of roofs of the old town, like a scene from the pages of a
storybook. For five centuries, the castle was home to the Palatinate electors of the
Wittelsbach dynasty. The castle has many tales to tell, some of which you can hear
on a guided tour available in seven different languages.

GERMANY FOR ALL TYPES OF VISITOR
Families, single travellers, active seniors, groups, people on their honey-
moons and people with disabilities: Germany has a holiday for all types
of traveller, whether they’re looking for something relaxing, stimulating
or action-packed. Every year, in an effort to inspire more people to visit
Germany, the German National Tourist Board (GNTB) promotes new
themes that reach out to a wide variety of target groups.
The theme for 2013 of ‘HotSpots in Destination Germany’ shifts the
marketing focus to young travellers. To help launch the campaign,
the GNTB conducted a survey of young people to find out their fa-
vourite hang-outs in Germany. The findings showed that Germany’s
cities are extremely popular with the youth demographic. In the
categories of nightlife, must-sees, shopping, cafés & bars and festi-
vals & events, young people up and down the country named their
top HotSpots, which were then featured on an interactive map.
Now, people are going online to suggest their own HotSpots for the
map, with more and more being added every day. The campaign is
compatible with all major social media platforms, meaning that visi-
tors can access the map when they’re on the go, checking out new
HotSpots, commenting on existing ones and entering their own.
During their trip, a dedicated GNTB app for tracking down places
offering free Wi-Fi in Germany helps them to stay in touch with their
friends. www.germany.travel/youth
The GNTB, in addition to its annual themes, promotes individual
anniversaries and one-off major events as a means of offering fur-
ther motivation for people to travel to Germany.
In 2013, for example, Germany is celebrating the bicentenary of
Richard Wagner’s birth with a whole host of events at historical
locations: Wagner cities, from his birthplace in Leipzig to the festival
town of Bayreuth, are tracing the life of the exceptionally talented
yet controversial composer with concerts, exhibitions and plays. The
GNTB is featuring these towns and cities, the anniversary events and
background information on Wagner at www.germany.travel/wagner.
Other marketing focuses for 2013 include 200 years of the Brothers
Grimm fairytales and the 150th birthday of Henry van de Velde,
founder of the Grand Ducal School of Arts and Crafts in Weimar.

Theme for 2014: UNESCO World Heritage – the greatest legacies of mankind and Mother Nature
Germany’s World Heritage includes
important churches, abbeys and palaces,
parks, historic town ensembles, industrial
monuments and entire natural landscapes.
The 37 UNESCO-listed sites in Germany are
popular destinations for cultural tours and
leisure breaks alike.
Nature lovers visit the UNESCO World
Heritage Wadden Sea on the North Sea
coast for its 10,000 square kilometres of
mudflats. The ebb and flow of the tides
make this a fascinating landscape. Long
walks are a fantastic way to experience
the great outdoors here, whether ‘on the
seabed’, through flowering salt marshes
along the dikes, on the islands and Hallig
islets or across the white sandy beaches
and dunes. Besides the Historic Highlights
of Germany, another place where the past
comes to life are the Prehistoric Pile Dwel-
lings in southern Germany, while visitors to
Wittenberg and Eisleben can follow in the
footsteps of the church reformer Martin
Luther.
Exhibitions and museums at the Bauhaus
sites in Dessau and Weimar recall the
inception of the Bauhaus movement,
which revolutionised art throughout the
western world in the early 20th century.
Together the 37 World Heritage sites form
an important element of cultural tourism
in Germany, which attracts visitors from
all over the world. The GNTB is promoting
these historic sites as part of its theme for
2014. It is integrating the vast potential of
the ‘UNESCO World Heritage’ brand into its
international marketing strategy with the
aim of strengthening Germany’s already
excellent image as a destination for cultu-
ral travel. www.germany.travel/unesco

THEME YEARS
25 years since the peaceful revolution in LeipzigThe 2014 key theme ‘25 years since the
peaceful revolution in Leipzig’ commemo-
rates the civic protests that began with
the Monday demonstrations in Leipzig,
which ultimately led to the fall of the Berlin
Wall and to German reunification. Leipzig
is marking these events with a series of
exhibitions and events.
Another key theme, the ‘600th anniver-
sary of the Council of Constance’, presents
a fascinating aspect not only of church
history but also of history as a whole. The
Council had convened to end the papal
schism that afflicted the Christian world in
the 15th century. A major regional exhibi-
tion will shed light on the Council and how
it affected day-to-day life in Constance.
25 years of German unity
The GNTB’s global marketing will focus on
German unity in 2015. Reunification follow-
ing a peaceful revolution was Germany’s
contribution to the collapse of the Iron
Curtain, permanently changing the map
of Europe and marking a turning point in
global history. The rest of the world is keep-
ing a close eye on the integration of the two
once separate states with their different
political and economic systems.
As part of its theme year, the GNTB is
training the spotlight on the impact of
reunification on tourism. New attractions
have emerged and much effort has gone
into restoring old ones. Reunified Germany
offers endless places of interest to discover,
including the reconstructed Church of Our
Lady in Dresden, the palaces and parks of
Potsdam and the modern tourism infra-
structure of the Baltic beaches in Mecklen-
burg-Western Pomerania.
Scenic routes in Germany
More than 150 scenic routes criss-cross
Germany, each focusing on a different
aspect of the country’s regions. Combining
sightseeing with the pleasures of the open
road, they are an ideal way of exploring
Germany by car, motorbike or bicycle. The
GNTB will feature these popular routes in
its marketing in 2015.
