The Melting Pot. The place where all can come and intermingle

peaceably. But in the small-town farmlands of Gadsden County

socioeconomic disparities are as stark as a plump red tomato against

a green vine. Immigrant workers line the plowed rows of crop fields .

They are governed by two things; a crew leader and the dire need for

monetary sustenance. Like a bad harvest, the Gadsden is replete with

dilapidated trailer parks and shotgun houses; yet gated communities

and BMWs are speckled about. The scorching North Florida weather

beats down on the earth throughout most of the year. Closed down

factories and merchant shops show a semblance of a healthy, thriving

town that once was. Decades later, it seems to rest upon the crutches

of a meager farming industry. Red neck, strong southern tradition,

religious zealots; the slightest difference will make one an alien in such

a town. This is not your standard America. This is an amalgamation

of persons who have learned to coexist but never to interact.
