Dear Horizon Families, e 1st Quarter is over now and report cards are out. Please take the time to review your child’s grades and encourage him or her to take responsibility. Do not overly praise or be so crit- ical; instead, reinforce the message that schoolwork and grades are the child’s responsibility. Here is an online resource to help parents teach kids to be responsible about their schoolwork: https://goo.gl/9goE5S Here are a few announcements: ConceptSIS Mobile App: e mobile app for our school infor- mation system is up and running for almost a month now on both Android and iOS operating systems. HSAT is currently accepting BOX-TOPS FOR EDUCATION. Parents and students may drop off their BOX-TOPS to the front office or their first teacher. These BOX-TOPS are worth $.10 for our school. Please help us continue to support our school and our stellar students.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

ANIME CLUB LEARNS JAPANESE

Anime Club, one of HSAT’s most active clubs, is currently learning Japanese from our in-house sub-stitute teacher, Ms. Townsend. Students in the club wanted to immerse themselves in Japanese culture. One way to do this is to learn Japanese. Students are learning common phrases and how to write Japanese characters. Mr. Brangham, club advisor, said, “I am thrilled the students are engaged in learning another language and another culture.”

STUDENTS VISIT COUNTRY LANE TREE FARM

Our ELL and kindergarten students visited the Country Lane Tree Farm. No other farm in NW Ohio or Michigan allows guests to wander through their farm, along side of peacocks, ducks, chickens, and bunnies to name a few. In addition to picking out their very own pumpkin, students got to milk a cow. Ms. Snoddy, kindergarten teacher said, “The smiles on student’s faces as they explored the farm was a real treat.”

HSAT recently hosted out annual school Spelling Bee for 3rd through 8th grade. The com-petition was fierce as many students spelled their way through rounds one and two. In the third round, host Mrs. Russell (middle school English teacher) said, “The competition was heated as it got down to just a few students.” Ultimately, Geovani Rodriguez-Juarez (7th) and Genesis Davis (4th) took home 1st place in their categories while Elijah Simmons (7th) and Elijah McKinney (5th) were runners-up.
