Narrowing the Education GapAt H5CF, we understand that an investment in our youth is an investment of our future workforce, leaders and business owners. Therefore, H5CF has been hosting the “Narrowing the Gap” Education Conference for the past 13 years in order to help motivate Hispanics to stay in school, learn about college, meet business professionals and compete for scholarships.
The Latino graduation rate is an urgent issue as evidenced by a 27% dropout rate among Hispanics, according to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Furthermore, one could fully appreciate the extent of the challenge when compared to white, black, Asian and Native Americans as 7, 10, 3 and 13% dropout rates, respectively (NCES). Although Hispanic’s high school dropout rate has significantly decreased over the last decade to 14%, according to the Pew Research Hispanic Center, H5CF believes this is the starting point to inspire Latino high school students not only to graduate, but to pursue higher education.
Each year, about 350 high school students are transported to a local college or university to:
• Hear about various educational and career opportunities available after high school.• Speak face to face with successful professionals who come from similar backgrounds in the Science, Tech-
nology, Engineering and Math (STEM)”, “Public Service” as well as “Media and Arts” fields.• Participate in break out workshops to discuss specific career paths with business professionals.• Receive information about how to apply to college or transfer between colleges.• Receive information about applying for scholarships and financial aid.• Have the opportunity to apply for scholarships provided by H5CF
89% Latino young adults say that a college education is important for success in life.1
48% Say that they themselves plan to get a college degree, citing financial pressure.1

13th Annual Narrowing the GapEducation Conference Highlights
Last year’s Narrowing the Gap Education Conference was all about motivating students to become role models and “Do It Yourself: Inspire.” As a result, hundreds of students came together to learn about their options for continuing their education after graduating from high school. In addition, it gave them the opportunity to hear from inspiring speakers about their journeys as well as professional experiences in various organizations such as the Social Security Administration, DOW Chemical and Aeromexico.
After the workshops, students filled out an evaluation providing invaluable information about the Education Con-ference. Below are some highlights and testimonials from the participants:
