N the variation form the resources of the com- Iposer are fully tested by his varied treatment of a single theme. The handling of these variations is masterly, while both in the quaint Sullivanesque theme and in its manipulation are seen those original qualities for which Tschaikowsky is justly famed. In the first record

found, after which the music changes into triple time. Here, peculiar use is made of abrupt stops in the latter numbers, and these are remarkably effective. The

last three variations are extremely beauti- ful in character, a leading part being assigned to the solo violin, which is heard both in an expressive

02422 Why do the Nations, "Messiah" Handel

    ANOTHER of Mr.

    Clarence Whitehill's

series of airs from Handel's " Messiah." This is one

of the most magnificent bass airs in existence,

    and the present performance

    enables the listener to realise

Clarence Whitehill. how great a song it is.

    Mr. Whitehill renders its

terribly exacting runs without effort, and with a

fine breadth of style, and unflagging vocal power.

Mr. Percy Pitt, also, has secured a true balance

between voice and orchestra, the latter receiving

due prominence, and the trumpets being especially

effective. The whole performance is, indeed, on

a very high level. (Speed 81.)

    T HE " Prodigal Son,"

    Sullivan's first oratorio, $ý

    was produced at the Worces-

    ter Festival in 1869. This

    air is a beautiful example

    of Sullivan's restful melody

    and Madame Kirkby Lunn's

    performance is one of the

highest character; the finely -I played orchestral portion Madame Kirkby Lunn.

    providing an ample back-

ground for the firm, measured, diction of the famous contralto. The passage in the upper register-"

But he that doeth the will of God,"

Lunn gives with thrilling effect, working up to the beautiful conclusion with a splendid certainty of touch. (Speed 80.)

Pwho wrote this song for Santley, was composer of several Italian operas, in one of which he himself sang the tenor part. This bluff baritone song, which goes to the well-marked rhythm of a horse's gallop, is taken with a rush that carries' all before it. Mr. Thorpe Bates singing of the lines

" I thought I could hear the curious tone

Of the cornet, clarionet, and big trombone."
