If you like specialty mustard, hear how Jim and Karen launched their product in 2007 and are now expanding their product line! East Hall, 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 15, 2010 Acting Intrapreneurially! with Erik Weyls, President, Coventya, Inc. Hear how Hiram alumnus Erik Weyls, uses his entrepreneurial skill set everyday as president of the North America division of Coventya, a world leader in specialty chemicals for metal plating. Wednesday, September 22, 2010 Global E-Commerce! with Michael Keresman, III, CEO, President and Chairman of Cardinal Commerce Corporation. Hear how Michael has consistently utilized his expertise and knowledge to grow CardinalCommerce from a start-up company to the world-wide leading enabler of payment brands with a global reach extending to Europe, Africa, North and South America, Asia, and Australia. Five Hiram students have won the opportunity to turn their business idea into real- ity. e students were the winners of the Entrepreneurship Education Consortium’s “Entre- preneurship Immersion Week.” Dan Fakhoury ’13, Adam Miller ’13, Sydney Vore ’11, Nicole Spencer ’11 and Kara Vantaggi ’12 traveled to Baldwin-Wallace College in August where they spent time attending academic sessions, networking, and perfecting a business concept. At the end of the week, the team presented their business concept to a panel of judges. e Hiram team developed a plan to create “Stir-Ups,” straws filled with chocolate syr- up. As the winners, they received a package of cash and giſts along with access to resources for furthering their idea. e judges praised the team for their work, saying that the level of fun in the product showed during their presentation. If you have ever wondered how businesses or organizations get started, here’s the chance to find out. Each Wednesday an entrepreneur will tell their story. Some of these entrepreneurs may be well seasoned, some may be just starting out. Hear how they did it…what they did right…what they might do differently…and what they might do next! is Wednesday, September 8, 2010, Integrated Entrepreneurship welcomes Jim (’88) and Karen (’89) Scher, owners of a specialty mustard company. Jim discovered his recipe aſter years of experimenting with mustard varia- tions in his home kitchen. He shared his pepper mustard with his friends, was persuaded to make his product available commercially, and then launched his product in 2009. Wednesday night, we’ll hear how Jim and Karen moved from working in their kitchen to meeting the intense demand of their product! Hope to see you in East Hall, 7 p.m., by the fireplace! Fireside Chats Resume September 8! ? Question of the Week—Win Pizza from Gionino’s! In the late 1940s, two graduate students endeavored to change the way businesses categorized merchandise by using ink that glowed under ultraviolet light. That method failed, but they were successful with another. Today, their mark is on nearly every product for sale in the world today. Who are they, and what did they invent? Correct answers will be entered in a drawing for a free large pizza from Gionino’s! Submit your answers to [email protected] by Thursday, September 9. Last week’s winner was Shaina Bryan, for correctly identifying Nicolas Appert as the inventor of food preservation through glass jars, a forerunner to the tin can.
