International/Youth, Canadian Red Cross, HamiltonOverview of Canadian Red Cross Youth Programs and Humanitarian Issues

Program

International and Youth Services is an inclusive and interactive series of programs which Ontarians support and participate in as their vehicle for humanitarian assistance. Each Program is known nationally for leading the development of knowledge, resources and involvement in humanitarian issues, for engaging youth and the community, for serving vulnerable clients and for providing opportunities for individuals to make a difference around the world. International and Youth Services is a force to change our community. Youth in this particular program are considered in the 14-25 year old range.

The Youth are involved in the local and global community with events such as: Sudan Week of Action, High School Youth Action Groups, Branch Youth Action Groups, Humanitarian Speaker Series, Social Justice Youth Conference, Afghanistan Project, etc.

The second strong component of I/Y is the Humanitarian Issues Promotion. This is a youth leadership program teaching youth to deliver Humanitarian Issues workshops such as: International Humanitarian Law, Children Affected by Armed Conflict, Landmines, Social Justice and Diversity, etc. These workshops are delivered in school and community settings. Youth are also encouraged to mentor new members on the delivery of said workshops.

This book contains flyers and information about our youth programs. Each page can be printed separately and posted in your school for students to view or distributed to teachers interested in holding a free workshop. Please don’t hesitate to email or call me with any questions you may have. Workshops or School Youth Action Group orientations can be booked at any time.

Dear Member of the Hamilton Community,

The Humanitarian Issues Program of the Canadian Red Cross promotes International Humanitarian Law, Humanitarian Values and Social Justice & Diversity to high school students and community groups through FREE educational and thought provoking workshops. Canada has an important role to play on the international scene and is engaged in trying to help solve some of the world’s most alarming humanitarian emergencies. The Humanitarian Issues Program aims to stimulate an interest in youth in international issues, and encourages them to become active global citizens.

Internationally, the Red Cross plays a distinctive role protecting the lives and dignity of those affected by conflict and disaster. The Red Cross serves as a neutral, independent body, advocating for compliance with International Humanitarian Law embodied in the Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocols, and works to increase awareness of the rules of law in armed conflicts.

Humanitarian Issues presentations are geared to high school students of Canadian and International Law, World Issues, Civics students, Geography, or to any class that is interested in adding an international humanitarian focus to their studies. Each workshop offers curriculum links that will aid in finding the best fit.

The Red Cross offers a unique perspective on humanitarian issues, and can incorporate specific interests that the teacher and class may have. Services include presentations by trained youth-facilitators on: Children and War, Landmines, Even Wars Have Limits, Introduction to International Humanitarian Law, Social Justice & Diversity, etc. Trained youth facilitators also act as mentors for other youth.

Please share this information with other Curriculum Leaders and teachers who may be interested in having the Humanitarian Issues Program visit their classrooms. I can be reached anytime to answer questions and schedule presentations.

Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to hearing from you.Respectfully,

Andrea McArthur Community Services Co-ordinator, International & Youth ServicesCanadian Red CrossOntario Zone400 King St. East | Hamilton | Ontario | CA [email protected] 905-522-8485 ext. 2063

The Canadian Red Cross Humanitarian Issues Program Workshop Descriptions

Introduction to International Humanitarian Law (IHL) teaches participants about the basics of international humanitarian law. Participants will become familiar with the four Geneva Conventions as well as the basic rules of combat. Following an introduction to the material, participants will explore and negotiate false conflict scenarios, applying IHL. A discussion of the role of the International Criminal Court and the difference between International and Non-International Conflict helps students understand the link between history of conflicts and modern developments in international relations

RAID Cross is a series of fast paced, interactive activities that use international humanitarian law as an instrument for encouraging more extensive thought about human behaviour. RAID Cross activities use simulation and games to draw attention to prisoners of war, the treatment of wounded people, combatants, humanitarian assistance, military decision-making and accountability in the aftermath of conflict.

Children Affected by Armed Conflict creates awareness and motivates students to get involved in the struggle to help children affected by war. Through readings, discussions and visual aids, participants learn about the humanitarian crises that emerge when warring groups ignore the basic principles International Humanitarian Law. This workshop uses touching images and stories of children in conflict situations, including those used as soldiers, to explore the importance of, and the need to protect the rights of the child

The Explosive Remnants of War (ERW): Landmines and Cluster Munitions involves active simulations, visualizations and discussions. Participants learn about the individual, social and economic effects of landmines, cluster bombs, and other explosive remnants of war and are introduced to International Humanitarian Law, international treaties and other efforts taken to limit the effects of discarded weaponry.

World History of Racism in Minutes (WHORM) is a simulation that uses a series of tableaus to portray the historical origins of racist ideas. The workshop shows how these ideas are connected to past and present inequalities, power relationships and conflicts. It illustrates that all cultures have history that has contributed to the development of humankind. The workshop not only educates participants about racism, but provides them with an overview of ancient and modern history that highlights its construction.

Racism and Discrimination: It is in You(th) to Stop It! helps participants to develop a sound understanding of racism—what it is and how it works in their community. Youth learn problem solving and prevention strategies so that they are better equipped to handle racism, discrimination, and stereotyping and/or cultural bias. Resources and activities are included so

that youth are empowered to deliver anti-racism campaigns in their schools. (We also have a Social Justice & Diversity Workshop)Building a Global Culture of Human Rights encourages students to become active participants in the construction of a culture of human rights by highlighting the local and international impact of the human rights movement. It looks at the history of the idea of human rights, various critiques of it and outlines the process that has allowed this idea to develop. It focuses on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Bill of Rights. Students are also shown how these conventions fit into international law and how they are enforced in an era of globalization.

Active Global Citizenship provides youth with an overview of the Millennium Development Goals and what action is being taken around the world to help achieve them. The participants are given an opportunity to work together to come up with ideas on how they, as youth, as leaders, can take action in their own communities.

Building a Culture of Peace begins with theatrical activities that explore a culture of peace. This is followed by a brainstorm of the values and characteristics of such a culture. In small groups, participants then examine scenarios centred on being Open-Minded and Non-Judgmental; Being Compassionate and Understanding; Speaking/Acting out against Injustice; Resolving Conflict Non-violently; and Forgiveness

Humanitarian Leadership This workshop deals with defining leadership generally and values-based leadership in particular. It will aid individuals in identifying their personal leadership style and how these styles work with the dynamics are different groups. With these defined it then takes the participant through an exercise to understand humanitarian leadership in the Red Cross context. These workshops run approx. 75 minutes.

Development Ups & DownsThe Canadian Red Cross has created a development workshop consisting of three 50-minute lessons aimed at youth aged 11-14. Filled with fun, engaging activities, including a board game similar in format to Snakes & Ladders, participants compare the challenges people face in their communities with those in developing countries. Participants explore the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the UN Millennium Development Goals for 2015 aimed at providing a better life for children, their families and their communities and how we can all help achieve them.

Breaking the Poverty-Disease Cycle, a 75-minute Canadian Red Cross workshop aimed at high school students as well as older participants, examines the UN Millennium Development Goals for 2015 and the obstacles and challenges we face in achieving them. Built around a lively and fun board game, the workshop aims to increase participants understanding about what the world is and is not doing in the face of development needs and what Canadians can do to help reverse the cycle of poverty.

All Workshops are provided at no charge and are planned to take anywhere between 60- 75 minutes and can be made to suit your class timetable. Donations are always welcome!
