Central Library © Peter Sebb Profile The university library is one of the central institutions of the Dresden University of Ap plied Sciences. It is a public scientific library, primarily for studying, teaching and re search but it is also available to the citizens of Saxony for their professional and general further education. The use of the library is free of charge. Besides the central library on the campus at Friedrich-List-Platz there is a branch library in Dresden-Pillnitz for the Faculty of Agriculture/Environment/Chemistry.

Service for parents On the ground floor of the central library is a Baby-care room with a baby`s changing table. We provide seat cushions and toys for kids. For more information, consult our staff at the information desk.

Information from A-Z

Annual lending is approved for the university staff for the purpose of re-search and teaching. The lending period is one year. If the literature is not available in various copies in the library, the borrower is willing to provide access to anyone interested in it. Annual lending has to be applied for by filling in a form (at the issue desk or on the library website → Benutzung und Services → Antragsformular für Jahresleihen).

Anti-theft device for laptops

Under the tabletops in the reading room there are eyelets to secure private laptop computers by Kensington locks. At the work places in the atrium area you can use the air vents for this purpose.

Baby-care room with baby`s changing table is on the ground floor of the central library.

Book-loss Please inform the library staff at the issue desk immediately in case you have lost media from our library stock. Then an equal replacement has to be provided and a handling fee has to be paid additionally. For further information please see the Library Rules and Regulations.

Branch library For the book and periodical stock of the Faculty of Agricul-ture/Environment/Chemistry there is a branch library in the rooms of the Sächsisches Landesamt für Umwelt, Land-wirtschaft und Geologie (Saxon State Office for Environ-ment, Agriculture and Geology) in Dresden-Pillnitz. Media which are located there are marked by “Zweigbibliothek Pillnitz” in the OPAC. There is a free book transport twice a week between the central and the branch library.

Calm anchor The calm anchor is a special location for books on counsel-ing and crisis management. It is located on the level B3 of the central library opposite to the lift.

Cancellation of reader-ship

Please cancel your library membership personally after finishing your studies or your semester abroad after terminating your employment with the University

of Applied Sciences External readers should cancel their readership as well if they do not wish to continue it.

Carrels are study cabins located on the 3rd floor, level B4. One of our 5 carrels is suitable for wheelchair users or for 2 or 3 people. The carrels are managed at the information desk on the ground floor and are rent free of charge to students of the University of Applied Sciences.

CDs which are part of a book cannot be borrowed separately (indicated by a green label on the bottom of the front cover). Single CDs or DVDs are generally to be found in open stacks.

Central library The central library is the library on the campus at Friedrich-List-Platz. In addition, there is a branch library for the Fac-ulty of Agriculture/Environment/Chemistry in Dresden-Pillnitz.

Changes in address must be reported immediately to the library.

Children`s books toys and seat cushions for use within the library can be bor-rowed at the issue desk.

Copying A copy card is needed to use the copiers at the central and at the branch library. These can be purchased at the copy card vendor machine in the central librarys’ copy room. In the central library as well as in the branch library, book scanners are at free disposal.

Corporate users are firms, companies and institutions which are registered users of the library. A written request as well as a denomi-nation of an authorized signatory is prerequisites to become a corporate user.

Database research Via the library website (see “Research” – “Database In-fosystem DBIS”) you can search in databases in the univer-sity intranet. Some of the databases’ content can also be found in the OPAC. For using the library public computers, a VPN login or library membership is necessary.

Data cables for the use within the library are borrowable at the infor-mation desk.

Deregistration certificates

are necessary for deregistration. They will be signed at the information desk during the office hours. Please return all borrowed books and pay fees if due before you deregister.

Eating and drinking (apart from water) are undesired in open ac-cess areas.

E-Books (Electronic books) are books in digital form. They can be found via OPAC or the library website and are only usable via VPN.

E-Journals (Electronic journals) are journals in digital form. They are searchable via the library websites (see “Research” → DBIS), via OPAC as well as via the “electronic journal li-brary” (EZB). They are mostly only usable within the uni-versity campus. To access the e-journals you need to login via VPN.

First aid room A first aid room with a baby´s changing table is on the ground floor of the central library.

Group study rooms The central library provides two group study rooms. They are allocated to students of the University of Applied Sci-ences, who wish to work in small groups (maximum of 15 people per room). These are only for non-recurrent events and not for regular seminars. Room reservations have to be arranged at the information desk on the ground floor.

Information Literacy The library offers several information literacy trainings.

Learn how to use our library catalog, our databases and how to avoid plagiarism. You can find more information and the dates of these offers on our website.

Internet workplaces are in the computer lab B 202 on the level B2 and in open

access areas of the central library as well as on the 1st floor of the branch library. For using the internet it is necessary to log in via VPN and being a registered user of the library.

Late fees are due if the loan period has been exceeded. They have to be paid even if the user has not received a written request. According to the Regulation of Fees there are the following accruing costs: 1. per commenced week, starting 8th day as from the due

date: € 1.00 per item 2. for short-term loans out of reference collections:

€ 2.50 per day and item 3. for short-term loans of storage media: € 2.50 per day

and item but not more than € 25.00 per item

Lending Borrowable are all media without the red shelf mark (bot-

tom label on the book cover). Unbound periodicals are not borrowable. Borrowing media is only possible with a valid library or student card. You can borrow up to 30 media at a time. The lending period is usually 28 days. Please use the self-issue counter to borrow books or come to the issue desk (during the office hours).

Library card Members of the University of Applied Sciences use their stu-dent or employee ID card as library card. External users receive a cost-free library card when registering. The loss of the library card must be reported immediately to the li-brary to prevent any misuse. It costs € 10.00 to issue a new library (chip) card. Staff members obtain a new employee ID card in the per-sonnel department, students of the University of Applied Sciences in the students` office.

Library tours can take place any time after prior announcement (mini-mum number of participants: 5 persons).

Licensed literature or data media are marked by a blue shelf mark (bottom label on the book cover). To borrow those media you have to sign a declaration of commitment to comply with the terms of license. Licensed media cannot be borrowed at the self-issuing counter.

Lift There is a lift in the central library to transport people and goods to all three floors (wheelchair users accessible).

Locations of books are searchable via the OPAC. They are composed of the notation and the shelf mark (see Shelf Classification and page 13).

Mobile phones have to be switched off or turned to silent mode in the li-brary rooms.

National licenses are databases and electronic media acquired by the “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft” (= German Research Community). The can be used within the intranet of the university. For further information please see “Suchen und Bestellen” on the website of the library.

Notations show the content oriented position of media within the shelf

classification (see page 13). You will find the notation on the top label on the book cover.

Novels

are at the gallery of the reading room. These books are marked with the notation O and are borrowable.

Office hours are the opening hours when the library staff is in attend-ance.

OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) is the web-based cata-logue where you can search in the stock (print and a part of electronic media) of the library. It is available on the in-ternet (see the library website: “Library Catalog- My ac-count”) and on the computers in the open access area. Searching for formal and contextual aspects as well as other searching strategies are possible.

Opening hours of the library are scheduled by the university administra-tion. For the current status and potential exceptions please refer to the library websites or notices in front of or in the library. The following services are offered only during the office hours: registration and deregistration payment of fees library-oriented information collection of reserved media assistance in database researches

Password (Kennwort) OPAC

To enter "My Account" you need a password (Kennwort). Students of the University of Applied Sciences use their own Login (Unix-ID plus password). Other users take their Li-brary-ID and the date of birth in the form DD.MM.YYYY. At “My Account – Personal Settings” you can change the standard password into your own creation. If you have for-gotten your password, please contact the library staff at the information desk to reset it to the standard form.

Password (Kennwort) VPN

for members of the University of Applied Sciences is the Unix-Identification plus password. Members of other uni-versities use their own fully qualified identification plus password. Readers who are not a university member can obtain a temporary internet access at the issue desk.

Periodicals of the current and the previous year are available in the reading room. Single magazines are not borrowable. Back issues are in the stockroom and can be ordered at the issue desk. Bound periodicals can be borrowed for a maximum of two weeks. A loan period renewal of periodical volumes is only possible on submission. The periodicals are research-able via the OPAC (electronic journals see E-Journals).

Purchase recommenda-tions

to complete the stock can be submitted by using a form (on the websites of the library under the heading “Service – Purchase suggestion” or at the information desk).

Reading room In the reading room you will find periodicals and law re-views of the current and the previous year. In the gallery area there is a representative choice of reference books and loose-leaf collections. Those media have an “L” ahead of the notation label und are marked by “Zentralbibliothek Lesesaal” in the OPAC (→ “Locations and availability”). The stocks in the reading room are not borrowable. At the gal-lery there is a selection of novels. These books are borrow-able.

Receiving office for late fees, postage and handling fees is the issue desk of the library (according to the Regulation of Fees).

Reference books are books which are marked by a red shelf mark (bottom label on the book cover). They are principally not borrowa-ble.

Registration is the prerequisite for using the library. For registration please present a valid identity card (or proof of residence). Students and the academic staff of the university use the student or the employee ID card as a library card. External users will receive a library card when registering. With reg-istering, you accept the Library Rules and Regulations and assure to respect them. After 6 p.m. and on Fridays after 3 p.m. users must bring the valid library card with them when entering the library.

Renewals of the loan period are possible up to 168 days if there is no reservation by another user. You can renew the period of loan at the issue desk, by phone or via e-mail (please fill in the subject line!) as well as via your library account on the OPAC “My Account - Loans”. After 168 days the book has to be submitted.

Reservations To reserve a book please sign in contact the library staff at the information desk or do it yourself via the OPAC. There-fore, you log in "My account", then call up the requested title and order it. A reservation is only possible if all items of a title are on loan. If the title is laid out ready for you, you will receive an e-mail. Reserved media are laid out ready in the library for approx. one week. They can only be collected during the office hours. Cancellation of reserva-tions is made on request by the library staff at the issue desk.

Return of books Borrowed media can be returned at the issue desk during the office hours as well as from 5:00 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. at the return counter outside the central library.

RSS-feed To subscribe to the library news by RSS-feed please visit the library website.

Rules and Regulations By signing the registration form, you accept the Library Rules and Regulations. The Rules and Regulations are ac-cessible at the information desk on the ground floor or on the websites of the library.

Scanner In the copy room on the level B2 of the central library and in the branch library there are book scanners for taking col-our copies as pdf- or jpg-files to save on a USB-flash drive. The use is free of charge.

Self-issuing On the ground floor of the central library there are two self-issue counters. Please note that certain media are excluded from self-issuing. For self-issuing a valid library or student card is necessary.

Shelf classification The stock in the open access area is arranged systemati-cally according to the Regensburger Shelf Classification. You will find general schemes on the single floors. Indexes to the single classification groups are on the front side of the shelves. Within a classification group (top label on the book cover) books are placed chronologically according to their shelf mark (bottom label on the book cover).

Shelf marks are the individual call number of all media in the library. The first two numbers show the year of acquisition, the fol-lowing number is the inventory number and the next ones show the item and the volume if any. You will find the shelf mark on the bottom label on the book cover. The colors of the labels have the following meanings: red: reference collection → medium is not borrowable white: medium is borrowable green: medium is borrowable and includes an electronic

data medium blue: To borrow media with a blue shelf mark you have

to sign a declaration of commitment to comply with the terms of license. Self-issuing is not possible.

Special locations of media are marked by a number or a letter in front of the notation and by naming the location in the OPAC. The most important special locations are: 1/ → Zweigbibliothek Pillnitz/ Branch library Pillnitz A/ → Ausleihtheke/ Information desk (ground floor)

Textbook collections are frequently needed textbooks and basic course record

books. They are often available in several copies. The first item of the latest edition is a reference book and cannot be borrowed (red shelf mark), unless the title is available as an e-book.

Theses University theses are provided as documentary proof on the library website under the heading “Research" as “HTW The-ses caatalog". The theses are obtainable or accessible at the respective faculty. They are kept there for five years.

USB flash drives are borrowable at the issue desk. The loan period is one week.

User service

Via the item "My Account" at the OPAC you can manage your library account. Please use your university login. Your library account allows you to: get an overview of borrowed and reserved media renew

Virtual tour For more information on the subject areas and different

services on each floor of the library building please visit the library website and get a virtual tour (also in English lan-guage).

VPN Electronic sources which are licensed for the University of Applied Sciences can be used only via VPN (Virtual Private Networks). For using the internet at the public computers of the library you need VPN too. Students of the University of Applied Sciences log in with: User name: s<library number> (library number = Bibliotheksnummer, see student card) Password: <Unix-Password>

Wardrobe Please keep your wardrobe and bags in the lockers on the ground floor. Entering the open access area with bags is not permitted.

Wireless LAN for members of the university is available on the 2nd – 4th floors of the central library and the branch library. For more information on how to login please see the website of the Computing Centre of the university.
