1 Start your search before you need

a doctor. Many people avoid rou-tine check-ups and ignore minor

health issues out of fear, procrastination or a simple case of the jitters. Eventually, though, all of us will need to see a physi-cian, whether for a routine physical or a medical problem. Don’t add to the stress by not having a doctor you’re already familiar with.

2 Be honest with yourself about

your personal preferences and

needs. Are you more comfortable going to a man or a woman? Does age mat-ter? Do you need a primary care physician or a specialist? Are you looking for a medi-cal doctor (MD), an osteopathic physician (DO), or does it not matter? Also think about when you’ll most likely be going to appointments, and if you want a physician whose o� ce is closer to your workplace or your home. Remember, you want to make going to the doctor the most comfortable, convenient experience possible.

3 Armed with your basic preferences, go over your insurance plan (assum-ing you have one) and educate

yourself about the type of coverage you

have, including any co-pays and premiums for which you’ll be responsible. Your search might be limited to the list of physicians in your area who are providers under your plan.

4 Now’s the time to start looking for names. Ask friends and col-

leagues for recommendations

and see if they line up with your prefer-

ences. Do an online search — or, ahem, pore over a local medical directory — and select a few names to consider.

5 Do some research on your initial picks. Visit the “Doctor Finder”

feature on the American Medical

Association’s website (www.ama-assn.org/aps/amahg.htm) to fi nd out about a physician’s training and board certifi cation. Similarly, search for osteopathic physicians by using the American Osteopathic Association’s website. You can also search for license information on any physician in the state using the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners website, including physicians’ training, how long they’ve been licensed, any disciplinary action that’s been taken against them and whether they are in good standing with the board.

6 Schedule a consultation with

at least two of your favorites

based on your initial criteria and research. An unwillingness on the physi-cian’s part to meet with you for a consult before you become an actual patient is a red fl ag; any doctor should give you the time you need to get your questions answered. Ask the physician anything that will help you know if he or she is right for you. A few helpful questions include:

• What are the physician’s offi ce hours, and is he on call (or who is on call) during o� -hours?

• How long does it usually take to get a routine appointment?

• Are walk-ins welcome? • What happens if I need to cancel an

appointment? • What is the typical wait time in the

waiting room? • Can I speak with the doctor over the

phone for simple questions or concerns?• Which hospital does the doctor use?

7 Assess the consultation and

make your choice! Did the physi-cian’s overall demeanor and per-

sonality complement or clash with your own? Did the doctor ask you questions, did he want to get to know your health history, issues, fears and expectations? Did he stay until all your questions were answered? Most importantly, did he listen to you? If he did, chances are you’ve found the right physician.

Everyone knows you should eat right, exercise and get plenty of sleep in order to protect your health. But something else will also benefi t you and your body in the long run: picking the right physician.

There are thousands of qualifi ed physicians out there, trained professionals who are ready and willing to treat what ails you. But not all of them are perfect matches. Picking a doctor who you are both confi dent in and comfortable with gives you peace of mind that makes all the di� erence when a medical issue arrives. Don’t rely on a fumble through the phone book or a cursory Google search for doctors in your area. Spend a little time to fi nd a good fi t for your needs. Here’s how:
