October 2012 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and Friends of the Hill United Presbyterian Church: The time of the beauty of blue skies contrasted with autumn leaves has arrived as God “paints” some very beautiful tableaus in the midst of God’s creation. It is also that time of year in which we think about and commit to the “beauty” of our stewardship life in Jesus Christ. God in Christ Jesus has given Himself completely to you and to me! Our stewardship, in turn, is the giving of ourselves: time, talent, spiritual gifts and treasure to the cause of the Kingdom of God through our Savior and Lord Jesus. This year, our theme is “First Fruits Giving;” that is, giving “off the top,” our first and our best to the cause of the Lord Jesus. Our theme comes from Proverbs 3:9: “Honor the Lord with your substance and with the first fruits of all your produce...” or “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your crops!” This year and stretching into 2013, please pray and think about your “First Fruits Giving” to Christ through the Hill Church. I think God for you and for your prayers, love, service, cooperation and commitment! Yours for “First Fruits Giving,” Pastor Clark Rev. Clark Sawyer

You are invited to invite and bring your family members, relatives, or friends to our times for worship, study, fellowship, service and outreach. Remember that we worship and serve an “inviting” God! Jesus said “Come unto Me...!” Let’s take Him up on that! See you and your “invitees” at our gatherings!

The Women’s Breakfast at Panera Bread began on Wednesday, Sept. 19

at 8am and continues weekly. We are studying “God’s Most Precious Jewels are Crystallized Tears” by Barbara Johnson and would be delighted to have you join us! The Men’s Lunch began on Monday, Sept. 24 and continues every other Monday. Join Rev. Sawyer and other men from our Church at noon

for a delicious lunch and fellowship. Service projects are sometimes available, too!

PEACEMAKING OFFERING

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2012

World Communion Sunday As stated in the September newsletter, the Presbyterian Peacemaking Offering supports the efforts of Presbyterians to work for justice and peace through their congregations, presbyteries, synods, and General Assembly. The day recommended for congregations to receive the Offering is World Communion Sunday, when Christians around the world gather to eat the bread and drink the cup offered by Christ, the Prince of Peace. The day is a time when we are mindful of our spiritual unity with Christ and each other, and we are led naturally to do what we can to make that unity Christ and others manifest. Receiving the Peacemaking Offering on this day and dedicating ourselves to the work of justice and peace are ways to live into the unity we have in Christ. The Offering supports a variety of peacemaking efforts: 25 percent is retained by congregations, 25 percent is used by synods and presbyteries, and 50 percent is allocated to General Assembly ministries. At Hill Church, we will keep 25 percent of the Peacemaking Offering locally which will benefit homeless veterans through the American Legion Riders. Our goal is to raise $625.00 or more. Thank you for your generosity and your prayers.

NEWS FROM THE GHANA MISSION

COMMITTEE

Priscilla Ivy Ahudenu , one of our Ghanaian scholarship recipients sent the following note to Kate Ihlenfeld and also a note to the Hill

Church. Priscilla now has a degree in Human Resources Management. Kate, Hey, how are you? I am doing well by God's good Grace. It's been long since we communicated. I hope all is well. I am done with school now and I am waiting for my national service posting which would be out, God willing, this week or September. I am so excited and I can’t wait to start service. National service is done after obtaining a diploma or degree. Every Ghanaian is required to serve the nation after school. What's new with you? Keep in touch. Take care and stay blessed. Priscilla In her letter, Priscilla is explaining the education system in Ghana: From Kindergarten, we go to class usually at age 6. We have class one to six then we proceed to Junior High School (JHS) formerly Junior Secondary School (JSS) which is from one to three (JHS one-three), mostly day school. At JHS three, we write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) mostly in April. Successful students proceed to the Senior High School (SHS) formerly Senior Secondary School (SSS) mostly boarding school in September or October. SHS student are usually between ages 15-19. In form three, which is the last year in school, students prepare and write the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) formerly Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE). Successful

students then apply to the Training College (Nursing/Midwifery or Teachers), Polytechnic (College) and University after being home for a year. After University or Polytechnic education, we go for national service (usually far from our residence) for a year. The National Service Secretariat (NSS) posts us to different parts of the country in different sectors and organisations. This is how the educational system in Ghana works. I would update you on latest developments in my life as and when I can. My regards to all. God bless you. Please stay in touch. Yours' in the Lord, Priscilla Ivy Ahudenu, Bubiashie E. P. Church, Ghana Scholarship beneficiary Also received by Nancy Slezak via Facebook:

Hi Nancy. Hope you're well? Am good. I sent a letter a week or two ago and i suppose you did not receive it. Well, I am

out of school now doing national service. National Service is a requirement for all diploma and degree holders. We're posted to various parts of the country to work (serve) in schools, hospitals/clinics, banks and other public as well as private institutions in the country. We just came out of the rainy season and we're entering the dry season. Ghana has just two seasons; rainy (which is the period where we experience heavy rains almost everyday causing flooding) and dry or harmattan (where there is severe sun shine and everything is dry). The sun can shine up to 100 degrees which makes everywhere extremely hot. My regards to everyone. Stay in touch. Privy Brown

HYC TO HOST LUNCHEON FOR THE

BUTLER SYMPHONY HOUSE TOUR

The Hill Youth Chorale is once again hosting the luncheon for the Butler Symphony House Tour. It will be held on Saturday, November 17th at the Faith Presbyterian Church (on Route 8 just south of Clearview Mall). We are asking for your help—you can help in a number of ways. Everyone likes homemade soup and we would appreciate your help with making the soup. On the Deacon’s table are recipes for stuffed pepper soup and broccoli cheese soup. Both recipes are pretty simple but very good. If you would like to make soup, please sign your name on the list in the overflow area and take the recipe for which ever one you would like to make. As before, we will be buying wedding soup and would appreciate a donation of $20.00 if you would rather do that than make soup.

You can also help by taking the Butler Symphony House tour and/or coming to Faith Church for lunch that day between 11am-2pm. Will we have soup, salad, beverages, and, of course, amazing entertainment! All this for a donation of $5.00! So please come and ask your friends and family to join you!

Thanks so much for your help. The young people will be working hard to make this a special event and we appreciate any help that you are able to give them!

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN FALL GATHERING “HATS THROUGH THE YEARS”

Joyce’s program will feature “Hats Through the Years.” The luncheon will begin at noon in the church Fellowship Hall. Women of all ages, including teens and preteens, are invited to attend. We are hoping some the girls and their mothers will volunteer to model the hats Joyce has with her. If you are willing to serve as a model, please indicate it on the form below. Registration deadline is October 7, 2012.

STEWARDSHIP EMPHASIS TIME AND

2013 STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN

The Stewardship and Mission Support Committee is pleased to announce that our stewardship emphasis for 2013 will focus on “first fruits” giving. This stewardship message is based on Proverbs 3:9 which reads: “Honor the Lord with your

wealth and with the first fruits of all your

crops.”

Our stewardship emphasis time and 2013 campaign will run from October 8- 28, 2012. Prior to the start of the campaign members of the Session and the Board of Deacons will conduct a special leadership giving drive to get the campaign off to a positive start. The campaign will wrap up on Sunday, November 4th when we will consecrate our “estimate of giving” cards. Light refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall following this Worship service. Along with the sharing of our treasure, “first fruits “ giving is about our willingness to share our time and talents for the up-building of God’s kingdom. Hill Church presents many ministries through which we can share our time and talents. These ministries include the: Board of Deacons, Chancel Choir, Instrumental Ensemble, Women’s Bible Study, Willing Workers, Ghana Mission Task Force, Women’s Book Club, Pew Greeters, Pew Tenders, Mary Lou Boyer Circle, Betsy McCormick Circle, Women’s Breakfast, Men’s Lunch, Hill Youth Chorale, Presbyterian Women, Memorial Hand Bell Ringers, the Praise Team, Hill Quilters, Ushers,

Greeters, Adult Sunday School, Delve 912, Session, C ommu n i t y D i n n er Volunteers, Senior Night Out Volunteers, the Garden Club, Newsletter and Church Office Volunteers and Adult Volunteers for Kids Club and our other

Children’s Programs.

The Stewardship Committee, along with our

other church leaders, will be visiting many of the

group ministries offered at Hill Church to thank

participants and to distribute the stewardship

letter and “Estimate of Giving” card.

If a member of the Hill Church family of faith does not currently participate in any of these group ministries their stewardship letter will be mailed to them. Whether you receive your “estimate of giving “card by mail or during participation in a group ministry you will be able to make your decision about giving to God through Hill Church in the privacy of your home, without another person from the church present to solicit a response. “Estimate of Giving” cards are only that – esti-mates, and in no way obligate a person to give more of their time, talent or treasure than they can afford or wish to share. We are hopeful that this year’s stewardship em-phasis time will help all of us realize the joy we can experience when we share the “first fruits” of our time, talent and treasure with God. We are also hopeful that anyone who is not currently part of one of Hill Church’s many ministries will consider joining one and share their time and tal-ents with others. If you have any questions about our stewardship emphasis time or our 2013 stewardship campaign please contact Jack Barkley, Mark Huba, Carolyn Street, Pat Brennen, Pastor Clark Sawyer or any other Hill Church leader. “For I remembered the words of the Lord Je-

sus, ‘It is more blessed to give than to re-

ceive’.” Acts 20:35

HARVEST HOME 2012

It is that time of year when the Deacons will be collecting food for the community for the Thanksgiving season. The food will be distributed through Covenant Cupboard in time

for the November holiday. For three weeks food will be collected in the southeast corner of the sanctuary near the organ. The following are suggestions of food items by weeks—though it's not a strict guideline, just a suggestion. October 27-28: Canned and jarred foods; vegetables, fruits, soup, jelly, spaghetti sauce, tuna, salmon, peanut butter, beef stew, pumpkin. November 3-4: Boxed and bagged food; flour, sugar, mac and cheese, pancake mix, cereals, rice, cake mixes, pie mixes, crackers. November 10-12: Three-pound bags of apples or five pound bags of potatoes—these require the least cold storage time. Other fresh vegetables and fruits cannot be collected due to the lack of cold storage areas. It is the Deacon's hope that our congregation will continue to be generous in bringing in food items and/or money donations to support our Harvest Home Project, and as a result, benefit Covenant Cupboard.

FALL CLEANUP

HILL CHURCH GARDEN CLUB

The Hill Church Garden Club will meet on Tuesday, October 9th from 6-8 pm to do fall cleanup. We welcome anyone who is willing to help!

IT’S SHOEBOX TIME!

Our Church will once again be collecting filled shoeboxes for girls and boys for Operation Christmas Child. This year, you can pick up a pre-formed

shoebox to fill at the Church! We will have more information in an upcoming Church bulletin insert about ideas for filling the shoeboxes with goodies for needy children, or you can visit the Operation Christmas child website at www.samaritanspurse.org/occ for ideas and an informative video. If shopping and filling shoeboxes are not for you, we will also accept monetary donations.

A special thank you to the youth and adult volunteers who have worked to make our fall programs for children a success! Without you, our children’s ministry would not be possible. Keep up the great work!
