PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Year 9 and 10 Formal A Year 9 and 10 formal has been planned for Thursday 17th August at Vogue Ballroom, Blackburn Road. Applications are now open for payment. It is anticipated to be a great night and I encourage students to attend. We need at least 100 participants in order for it to run. Master planning We continue to regularly meet with the builders and architects to review progress of the upgrade. Some significant work has been planned over the up-coming school holidays including:

changes to the bus car parking

conversion of the old basketball courts to new staff car parking

establishment of a new main electrical board and completion of R block brickworks. New locker bays - Steel work has been put up. The builders are looking at different roller door

companies to get the most reliable one. Multi-function courts - Students and classes are now actively using the courts. It is great to see such activity. Student Attitude to school survey 2017 The Department has delayed the annual student attitudes to school surveys. We expect them to be administered to students on Wednesday 19th July. NDIS I attended a Principal’s briefing on the National Disability Insurance Scheme rollout last week. The rollout of services has been organised using local Government areas as a basis. The transition date for us is 1st November 2017. The NDIS rollout may affect a very small number of our families. It is my understanding that families who are already receiving Disability Support have been contacted by the agency and informed of any changes. The school will work through the student wellbeing team to ensure that families of all of our eligible students are supported and kept informed. From my briefing I note that there are many details that are still to be ratified between the State and Federal governments. Ian Watkins Principal

SPORT NEWS Year 7 Boys Football – Friday 9th June What started off as a stressful morning, turned out to be a very successful afternoon. After not having enough boys to form a team, we were able to make a few last-minute recruits to form our Year 7 Boys Football team for the interschool Round Robin. The boys played in fantastic spirits, sticking to their game plan as instructed by student coaches Liam Hewett and Seth Gysberts. Highvale finished the day winning 2 out of their 3 games, only losing to Vermont S.C, to finish 2nd overall on the day. A big thank you to Mr White who attended the day and took on the role as staff coach. It was a fantastic effort by all the boys involved and great day to be a part of! Region Cross-Country Finals – Yarra Glen On Tuesday 20th June, 13 Highvale students competed in the Eastern Metropolitan Finals at Yarra Glen Racecourse in both the 3km and 5km course. The weather was fantastic considering we were in the month of June, which made the course slightly less gruelling for our competing students. Congratulations to the following students who represented Highvale on the day:

Talia Allen U13 Joshua Duncan U15 Emily Badcock U13 Luke Pearson U16 Bethany Anderson U14 Sarah Duncan U17 Samantha Bignell U14 Denzel Ncube U21 Felix Chung U14 Aden Dahlitz U21 Ethan Puls U14

Congratulations to Sarah Duncan who placed 8th in her race, qualifying her for the State Cross-Country Championships to be held at Bundoora Park on Thursday 20th July. Thank you to Zoe Glazner (one of our sports captains), who was chief photographer for the day and captured some fantastic photos below:

CHARITY EVENT

Two years ago, my brave friend Jamie spent most of Grade 1 in RCH

having surgery and treatment for Bowel Cancer as both Inpatient and Outpatient. He has since made a wonderful recovery.

I'm inspired by his courage and enthusiasm, so I would like to help raise funds for Bowel Cancer Research by cutting my very long hair.

Jamie is my Everyday Hero and I want to be his Everyday Hero too by cutting

my hair in his honour!! I am also doing this to raise awareness that Bowel Cancer can be acquired at any age.

I have grown my hair for two years now so that my hair can be donated to make a BIG WIG for a worthy recipient.

If you would like to make a donation, Gold Coin Donations can be made at the school office into my BIG WIG tin or if you’d like a tax-deductible receipt (which will be personally emailed) please donate online:

https://give.everydayhero.com/au/lloyd-s-big-wig-cut

With thanks in advance for your kindness in supporting this great fundraiser.

SCIENCEWORKS EXCURSION “On Wednesday, both of Ms Dimou’s physics classes went on an excursion to Scienceworks, all the way on the other side of the city. As soon as we arrived, we were directed into the planetarium; a large dome with reclining seats. Once the show began, above us was no longer a dome but a sky full of stars. First, we were taught about the latest scientific discoveries on black holes. One fact that stuck with me was that black holes contain an extremely large mass, 17 billion times that of our sun, all compacted to the size of a needle head. Our second show was about the stars in the night sky and ways that we can identify constellations. We learnt how to find the bearing south by locating the Southern Cross, going down four and a half times the famous constellation, and then looking straight to where that leads on the ground.

We were then given free time to wander around the exhibitions, the main attraction for us being the sport section. There, we were able to use machines to test our physical abilities, play as a goalie in soccer using virtual reality, and simulate wheelchair racing. To end our day, we were given a tour and were told of the history of the pumping stations. The pumping stations were a sewerage system where all Melbourne’s waste went. Although the stench was extreme, hearing about how things used to work there was quite interesting. Overall, everyone enjoyed themselves and came out knowing lots of interesting facts about space. Thank you to Ms Dimou for taking us on the excursion and to Ms Christensen and Ms Humble for helping to keep us in order.” Chayli McCann Yr 10 Student

What could be more rewarding than supervising your son or daughter on their learner permit so they can become a safer driver? Many parents might add "and what could be more challenging?" Do you remember your own learning to drive experience? This week at school, your son or daughter will be taking part in a VicRoads Keys Please session. Whether or not they already have their Ls, this session tells them everything they need to know about making the most of the learner driver period. Parents and carers have an important role in helping their young people develop the skills and attitudes they need to become safer drivers. You should feel like a sports coach (not a driving instructor) and there are two resources to help you. The VicRoads Learner Kit given to all successful learner permit applicants contains the booklet Guide for Supervising Drivers that is essential reading – make sure you ask your son or daughter to pass it on! The second resource is the online Lessons from the Road resource. Lessons from the Road features eight videos. The videos showcase the emotions and real life issues in learning to drive. They help you work through the four stages required to help learners achieve their goals. Lessons from the Road is easy to use and can be accessed on the VicRoads website at vicroads.vic.gov.au and search “Lessons from the Road”. When your student attends the Keys Please session they will be encouraged to discuss the information they have received and to watch Lessons from the Road at home with you. Please ask them about the Keys Please session and make sure that you watch the videos together. It won’t take long and it will help you through the process of learning to drive as well as information for keeping new solo drivers safe. Research shows that learners who gain experience with parents have about 20% lower crash and traffic offence rates once they are licensed than learners who only take professional lessons. Research also shows that on average learners who gain an average of 120 hours of supervised on-road experience in all conditions have a 30% lower risk of crashing after getting a licence. VicRoads strongly recommends watching Lessons from the Road. Helping your son or daughter to be a safer driver is the one Rewards Program you can’t afford to miss out on!
