Event Proceedings

Organization Team of the 1st One-Belt-One-Road Event

2nd One-Belt-One-Road Event

The 1st “One-Belt-One-Road Inclusive and Sustainable City Exhibition and Dialogue” (OBOR event), successfully organized by UNIDO’s South-South and Triangular Industrial Cooperation (SSTIC) and the Finance Center for South-South Cooperation (FC-SSC), linked the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs 9, 11 and 13, in particular) with the One-Belt-One-Road (OBOR) initiative and encouraged all UN Maritime and Continental Silk Road (MCSR) partner agencies (i.e. UnOSSC, UnDP, UnWtO, UnESCO and UnIDO) to work together at the headquarters level towards a common goal, namely implementing the 2030 Agenda in tandem with the OBOR initiative and achieving inclusive and sustainable urban-industrial development.

More than 450 participants took part in over 27 events held during the week (17 to 21 October 2016), with approximately 50 cities from 25 countries represented. Nearly 100 private-sector representatives from companies both here in Austria and worldwide and a full roster of over 60 keynote speakers, moderators and panellists enlivened the forum’s discussions.

• The 1st OBOR event successfully linked the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs 9, 11 and 13, in particular) with the OBOR initiative and encouraged all MCSR partner agencies (i.e. UnOSSC, UnDP, UnWtO, UnESCO and UnIDO) to work together at the headquarters level toward a common goal, namely implementing the 2030 Agenda in tandem with the OBOR initiative and achieving inclusive and sustainable urban-industrial development;

• Through 27 sub-events/side events (including high-level forum sessions, an exhibition, study tours and matchmaking meetings), the 1st OBOR event provided a comprehensive overview of urban-industrial development challenges facing cities located along the OBOR;

• With a total attendance of over 450 participants and approximately 50 cities from 25 countries represented, the event has better positioned UNIDO and other partners involved in the OBOR initiative to promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) under the umbrella of South-South and triangular industrial cooperation (SSTIC);

• Nearly 100 private-sector representatives from companies worldwide and a full roster of over 60 keynote speakers, moderators and panellists enlivened the high-level forum’s discussions. 10 workshops and presentations along with 4 study tours provided participants with deeper insight into ongoing challenges and opportunities in the area of urban development;

• The event has facilitated the shift of UNIDO’s strategic focus to urban areas, directly impacting over 54% of the global population, and has helped to further an exploration of UNIDO’s holistic potential to undertake technical cooperation activities when dealing directly with municipal governments;

• The 1st OBOR event directly supported the development of UNIDO’s Sustainable City Programme for the City of Astrakhan in Russia. The City of Astrakhan was one of 50 cities participating in the 2016 event. This $10 million programme aims to support the Astrakhan City Administration’s implementation of an Energy Management System (EnMS), Waste-to-Energy (WtoE) City Program, and the integration of industry and sustainability into the city’s urban-planning and socioeconomic development strategies;

• More than 220 people participated across B2B, B2G and G2G matchmaking activities during the 1st OBOR event. City-level and sector-specific matchmaking sessions involved over 100 meetings and negotiations, which resulted in more than 35 formal meetings;

• Finally, the 1st OBOR event resulted in the establishment of the “One-Belt-One-Road Inclusive and Sustainable City Service network” with 19 focal points from municipal governments, chambers of commerce and academia, directly linking UNIDO with urban experts and city-level counterparts. Academic focal points include the University of Oxford (United Kingdom), tsinghua University (China) and freie Universität Berlin (Germany). This network will encourage city-to-city, city-to-business and business-to-business cooperation.

With support from FC-SSC, UNIDO is pleased to announce the “2nd One-Belt-One-Road Inclusive and Sustainable City Exhibition and Dialogue”, which is to be held in Vienna from 26 to 28 September 2017.

Through 27 sub-events/side events (including high-level forum sessions, an exhibition, study tours and matchmaking meetings), the 1st OBOR event provided a comprehensive overview of urban-industrial development challenges facing cities located along the OBOR. The 2nd OBOR event aims to focus sharply on sector-specific urban-development challenges, which will aid in the development of concrete project-based opportunities for business matchmaking, financing and investment.

A one-day high-level policy dialogue will take place at the beginning of the event to heighten its impact, followed by a half-day mayoral forum and dialogue showcasing success stories and practical urban solutions, with the sector-specific exhibition and matchmaking organized in parallel. In addition, a “One-Belt-One-Road City Service Network” annual focal point workshop will be held to further strengthen the network’s capacity. An inter-agency meeting will also be organized to discuss integrated approaches to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Project-oriented investment opportunity portfolios, informed by the unique urban development context of each identified city, will be developed to assist in the event’s matchmaking activities.

This year, UNIDO will also identify cities along the OBOR, whose development achievements will be systematically analyzed in line with this year’s priority sector. To this end, sector-specific city assessments will be conducted, to facilitate sector-specific regional assessments, as well as the codification of case studies and business opportunities.

More information regarding the 2nd OBOR event will be uploaded soon on the following webpage: www.unido.org/obor-reg/.

for more information regarding the event, feel free to contact us at [email protected].
