    Some years ago I was in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and met with the NZ/Malaysian Accountants society.One good friend of NZ explained how he came to undertake free education in NZ under the Colomboplan. He was successful, so why couldn't he send the most precious thing in his life, his daughter, to NZ tolearn?

    Uni students call for rethink of loan scheme

    Compacts unlikely to drive real reform

    Government intervenes to avert catastrophe

    As the world recession hit the Antipodes during 2008, Australian universities began to see the beginningof a catastrophic decline in their investments and endowments. By the year's end, already cash-strappedinstitutions faced a calamitous A$800 million loss (US$570 million at the time), more than twice anearlier forecast. Government intervention, however, prevented a catastrophe occurring.

    Around the world, there is a growing concentration of investment in world-class universities and centresof research excellence, including China, Finland, France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Russia,Singapore, Spain and Vietnam. Why are they doing this? And why aren't we, in Australia?

    In 1986, the British government initiated a series of systematic appraisals of the quality of researchperformed in UK universities. Through the Research Assessment Exercise, they used 'selectivity'incrementally to achieve 'concentration'.

    DENISE Bradley has backed federal Education Minister Julia Gillard's plans for a My University website,arguing it is in line with the new "student demand-driven" system being rolled out.
