A recent report estimates the market size of education in the UAE to be well above $7 billion. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific has been instrumental in bringing about this change. With the setting up of the National Authority for Scientific Research in 2008, awareness and application of knowledge and its dissemination through participation of institu- tions of higher education in the UAE has increased substantially. Pertinently, the government has taken several strides towards transforming the place into a knowledge-based economy. The setting up of Educational Free Zones has proven to be an impor- tant hallmark towards achieving this objective. Dubai International Academic City (DIAC), a first of its kind in the world, has a state-of- the-art campus spread over 18 million square feet. With more than 460 academic pro- grammes, students indeed have a wide choice in higher education. The number of students that could demand a place in the higher education system is expected to increase by 2016. GRADUATEs of environmental and healthcare management courses at Canadian University of Dubai are in higher demand than ever as worldwide pressure to ‘clean-up’ takes to the Middle East.

Dr Rami El Khatib, the Chair of the school of Environment and Health sciences, commented: “Many students see business as being a strong academic degree because of the amount of jobs in this sector — but it’s actually un-balanced and still hard for stu-dents to graduate with a guaran-teed career. There is a known lack of healthcare and environmental

professionals, not only in the UAE but also worldwide. The job pool for this is constantly growing.”

Although still a relatively new sector to the UAE, the environ-ment is fast becoming a concern, with the government eager to fund this type of work. Over the past few years, initiatives such as the Emirate Environment Group’s ‘Clean Up UAE’ have been striking up with thousands of UAE resi-dents taking part.

Dr Rami added: “The country is involved with so many environ-mental and healthcare projects — from holding international con-ferences, community groups and initiatives, alongside the opening of Healthcare City. it doesn’t take much to see this sector is grow-ing.”

Environmental and health man-agement study programmes are a mix of science and management courses. Environmental manage-ment majors look at areas such as water pollution, pest control, air

pollution and wastes disposal, while healthcare studies looks at the administrative side of manag-ing healthcare institutions, includ-ing hospitals.

students at the Canadian Uni-versity of Dubai have a hands-on approach to learning. Most recent-ly, a senior class completed a re-search project involving water analysis in Jumeirah that was pub-lished in an international journal.

Dr Rami continued: “The Ca-nadian University was one of the first private institutions in Dubai to offer these courses. Now, they have started popping up at the other schools across the UAE. As a university cannot start a course without a high enough demand, you can see how expansive this sector is becoming.”
