Ballard/Highcliffe Lecture Series (VDN) The next lecture will take place on Thursday 3rd March 2016 at 7pm at Ballard School. This week the lecture will be on comedy writing and the media. Will Ing has written for many high profile television programmes such as Miranda, Spitting image, Have I Got news For You, 8 out of 10 Cats and he has even written for Ant and Dec. Will now has his own acclaimed independent production company ‘Black Dog Television’. The evening promises to give an insight into the world of entertainment. Don’t miss it! Online Safety Performance (MYP) On Monday 29th February, singer/songwriter Roch Cottell will be visiting Highcliffe and giving performances to Year 7 and Year 8. Rich has 20 000 subscribers on YouTube and has supported acts including The Wanted and Conor Maynard. Rich will be giving advice on how to stay safe online (never giving out personal information, never meeting strangers online, safety on social network sites, following rules of your parents on the internet etc.) as well as discussing cyber bullying and where to go for help. He will also discuss personal stories explaining a time when he was affected by cyber bullying. He has taken this message to hundreds of schools across the country and now it is Highcliffe’s turn! YEAR 9 BLITZ PSHE Workshop (MRD) Thank you all for your amazing contributions on Wednesday. The Police, Fire Service and Shadows were impressed with your behaviour and willingness to get involved with all the activities and discussions that took place during the morning. Please can you complete the following survey to reflect how much you have learnt: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HighcliffeSchool-PostBlitz2015-16 Year 10 Mock interviews (VDN) The mock interview programme got off to a very positive start last week. The next day is Wednesday 2nd March 2016 with students being notified about their appointment time well in advance. Don’t forget to bring your portfolio, something you are proud of and a smile! Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment time to the Library entrance by En 8. Well done to our Year 10s.

Literacy Focus

Focus on Connectives

CONNECTIVES FOR DEVELOPING AND EXPANDING POINTS

One way in which you can PUSH YOURSELF in your writing is to show that you are not satisfied with

making one simple explanation and that you are willing to develop ideas when appropriate. This shows

RESILIENCE and RESOURCEFULNESS. Here are some connectives that can help students develop points:

Furthermore,

In addition to that …

Make sure you use them in your writing when being asked to give explanations and develop ideas.

SPELLING

In the student planner there is a “Word Wall” on which students can write troublesome spellings. If you

have corrected a spelling, students should write the word on their word wall so they can practise it. The

“Word Wall” is on page 183.

SPELLING OF THE WEEK

Ecoclub The Highcliffe garden is up and running for the 2016 season. Waitrose have kindly agreed for us to have our annual sale at the supermarket as part of activities week and so we now have a busy time ahead sowing new crops and getting the garden ready for Summer. This week we have repaired the cold frames and planted onions – there will be lots to do over the next few months. The Ecoclub is open to all members of the lower school. We meet on a Tuesday afternoon in the school garden after school. New volunteers are always welcome – remember to bring suitable outdoor clothing. Please see Mr Craven in SC12 for further details. A level Biology Support Support sessions are ongoing. General support for Year 12 is running after school on Wednesday afternoons. Year 13 support is available during lunchtime on Tuesday. Support sessions take place in SC12.

As part of the school’s World Book Day celebrations on Thursday 3rd March 2016; we are delighted to

announce that published author Jason Rohan will be visiting the School. He will be giving two interactive

workshops on what it is to be an author and how to write creatively.

At break time Jason will be in the school Library to answer any questions that students may have. This

will also be an opportunity for students to purchase signed copies of either of Jason’s books at the price

of £4.20. This is 40% off the recommended retail price. Of course there is no obligation for any student

to purchase a book. The books are available on Wisepay and students will receive the signed book on

the day. There will also be some available to buy on the day.

Copies of the first chapter of Jason’s debut novel, the Sword of Kuromori , are available in the Library for

students to read. This will whet their appetite before World Book Day. (Students who have already read

this chapter have really enjoyed it and are looking forward to reading more)

Praise for Jason includes:

‘For lovers of action adventure, The Sword of Kuromori combines Japanese mythology with a modern setting, in which our hero and a kick-ass girl battle demons; distinguished by witty repartee and a vivid, expert knowledge of Japan and its culture.’

Nicolette Jones Sunday Times

‘Present day Tokyo provides the setting for this furiously paced and entertaining adventure story. This debut author ups the thrill content by introducing a range of mythical Japanese monsters as our hero - ably supported by a motorbike-riding female sidekick - battles to stop a catastrophe, never sure of who he can trust.’ Guardian Best New Children's Books, Summer 2014
