Important Details
► Registrations will only be accepted online.
Go to the hoac-bsa.org website and select the following links:
Districts—High Trail—Activities and Camping.
Registrations will be accepted until 1/2/18 or until the MBA is full.
Classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Be advised that the MBA fills up
early. Class sizes are limited.
Absolutely NO WALKINS the day of the event!!! Scouts previously not registered will
NOT be allowed to take the place of other scout participants not in attendance that day.
Cost: $9.00 (includes event patch)
Scouts may take up to three classes except in the case of Emergency Preparedness, Aviation,
and First Aid (three-hour classes) which limit a scout to two classes.
Prerequisites: A scout must bring to class and have read a copy of the merit badge book
current as of October, 2017. He should be prepared to discuss its contents. All classes
also have prerequisites that must be done before attending class if a scout hopes to complete
the badge at the MBA. See the attached information for a list of classes and prerequisites.
This year’s MBA features ten Eagle-required badges and twenty-six other badges for a total
of thirty-six. New offerings this year include Programming and Cooking.
Scouts taking Model Design and Building will need to bring $6 in exact change to
purchase a model being provided by the counselor. Please also note: requirement 5d is
a "post-requisite" in that, after doing the classwork, the scout will have to arrange to
meet with the counselor at a later date to complete requirement 5d.
All registrations must be made online by your designated unit representative, not
individually.
Allow two weeks after MBA for processing of Merit Badge Cards. Please do not plan a
Court of Honor for less than two weeks after the MBA.
MBA Committee: Amanda Davis (Assistant Registrar), Jason Davis (Assistant Chair), Ken Fuenfhausen, (Chair),
Teresa Fuenfhausen (Event Assistant), John Monson (Registrar), Herb Myers (Assistant Registrar)

Regarding First Year Scouts
First year scouts--including those who have moved from a pack to a
troop before February 1 and are registered as Boy Scouts--are welcome
to attend the MBA. However, we'd suggest a few ideas to help your new
scouts succeed.
►Be sure they get their pre-requisites done ahead of time when
possible. Possibly use some troop meeting time for this.
►Though they are welcome at all badges (other than those reserved for
Star Scouts and above), we'd recommend the following badges which
are less demanding and, therefore, give new scouts a better chance of
completing their badges: Traffic Safety, Fire Safety, Fingerprinting, and
Plumbing. Please discourage your first year scouts from taking
required badges. If a boy has only been a scout a sort time, he really
isn't ready to tackle a required badge and still get out of it what he
should.
►Please help first year scouts understand that, regarding prerequisite
work, scouts cannot run off a bunch of internet materials and hand it in
as their own work. Their prerequisite work must be in their own words
(preferably handwritten). It does them no good to run off someone
else’s work, possibly not even reading and understanding it. Internet
material will not be accepted. Help first year scouts properly write up
their prerequisite work.
►Remember: Webelos Scouts cannot earn Boy Scout Merit
Badges. Only registered Boy Scouts can attend the MBA.

Special Notes Regarding Prerequisites
and Merit Badge Books
Since this registration packet is being distributed in October, the
prerequisites listed are based upon the requirements current as of
October, 2017. Some years a problem arises in that, occasionally, the
requirements for a badge will be changed by national after our
registration has begun. If a scout waits to purchase the books he needs,
he takes the risk of having newer requirements from a newly published
book which will not be the standard for the day. He could show up in
class with the wrong prerequisites accomplished as those in this packet
are based on the requirements as of this printing, October 2017.
Please be sure this doesn’t happen with your scouts. Register early and
then purchase the books ASAP. This way we avoid frustration for the
scouts and our counselors. If a scout comes to class with the wrong
book, he’ll fail to complete the badge that day.
On another note, we’d strongly suggest using some troop meeting time
to help your scouts complete prerequisites where possible. Only one
third of scouts who attend the MBA walk out with completed badges
that day due to a lack of prerequisite work.
Finally, scouts doing prerequisite work cannot run off internet material
and hand it in as their own work. Their prerequisite work must be in
their own words (preferably handwritten). It does them no good to run
off someone else’s work, possibly not even reading and understanding it.
Internet material will not be accepted.
Help your scouts succeed by being prepared!
