Who are S7rling Lloyd? • UK & US Based Materials Manufacturer
• Infrastructure Specialists (40 years)
• 7 years in micro-‐trenching for fibre
deployment
We’re “in Highways”. In the UK we work with
• Local AuthoriMes (ADEPT)
• Highways England
• HAUC

Great Progress ……. right? • IniMal target 90% properMes at
100 Mbps by end 2015
• Current target 95% of properMes at
24 Mbps (or beXer) by end 2017
• Current posiMon at August 2015
= 83% of properMes done to date

So now what? How do we complete the last 12% • There are 23 million premises
approx. in the UK
• To reach the 95% target we have
2.85 million properMes remaining

So now what? How do we complete the last 12% That means we have 17,700 miles of
fibre to install in the next 24 months…..
…. and we’ve done all the easy stuff!

Oh, and that could cost £1 billion! And take many years if we do it like this (i.e. by “tradi7onal dig”)

Process train
What is Micro-‐trenching? • Cucng just enough – and no
more
• Systemising the process
• UMlising new techniques and materials
• Installing at a shallower depth
• Doing less damage to highway assets

Micro-trenching for FTTx
What can micro-‐trenching offer? Superfast deployment
• Greater Output (typically 6x faster than tradiMonal dig)
• Up to 600m (2000 j.) per day
• Less disrupMon to the public
• Less traffic congesMon
Shetland, UK (2010)
Innovation Driven, Service Led, Solutions Based.
Why micro-‐trench? Lower Environmental Impact
• Significantly less waste created to be disposed of
• Less new materials imported
• Fewer truck movements
• Less traffic congesMon
All this means lower CO2

Why micro-‐trench? Lower cost
• Lower first cost – typically 1/3 of tradiMonal dig
• Lower long term maintenance costs -‐ no secondary compacMon / sunken trenches
• Less damage to the highway / footway asset
• Less mess outside your potenMal customers house!

Reinstatement • Process train approach moves
conMnuously along the road
• All the processes are in this image
• Rapid cure of the reinstatement means minimal traffic management behind the works
• 600 lm (2000 j.) per day complete installaMon

Micro-trenching for FTTx
Tradi7onal dig
The alterna7ve… • TradiMonal trench dig would be up to 6 x slower
• Would create much more disrupMon for residents and road users
• Uses far more material and creates much more waste
• Far higher carbon footprint
• Much greater damage to the road or pavement asset and likely requirements for more long term maintenance liability (secondary compacMon etc.)
• Costs 3x as much!
Innovation Driven, Service Led, Solutions Based.
Micro-trenching for FTTx
Final thoughts… • Just because we have always done it that way….. • The scale of the task – we need innovaMve techniques • New techniques require suitable materials
