A lot of little girls dream about the future — who they will marry, what their dress will look like, and what their special day will entail. As for

me, i never really understood why people loved weddings so much, until it was time to plan my own.

Knowing real, godly love in my heart is what made me so excited about weddings, but i quickly realized how interesting the industry truly is when i got started. it wasn’t long before i became the proud owner of every bridal magazine i could get my hands on, and i still pick them up from time to time just for fun.

i’m a planner, a list-maker, an ardent “crosser offer,” and I love a good challenge. I love to brainstorm, research, organize, imagine, create, and then revel in the finished product.

That might be why i’m drawn to writing, but i think it’s also why i’ve learned to love weddings. After all, what is a wedding if not one monumental, collaborative, orchestrated, and carefully executed work of art?

maybe you’re a bride-to-be that’s been swooning over your dream dress since kindergarten, or maybe you’re newly engaged and feeling a little intimidated by it all. Take it from me — either way, there’s something for everyone to love about the world of weddings when you really take time to explore it.

in western Watauga County, an awe-inspiring piece of private property in the Bethel community played host to this col-laboration of skillful High South vendors. With a restored 1860s farmhouse off in the distance, this verdant countryside offered the perfect setting for a dreamy sunset photo shoot.

Hickory-based portrait and lifestyle photographer Calah Stephens was behind the camera, with Charlotte model Nicole Brantley and actor/filmmaker Justin Turn-er portraying the happy couple.

our bride showed off an ultimately chic Alencon lace gown with open back, bead-ed scalloped lace, and covered buttons. South’s Specialty Clothiers provided the dress from the mori lee Collection of inter-nationally recognized designer madeline gardner. The beauty pros at Serendipity Hair Studio and Boutique completed her look with a delicately side-swept braid and makeup from its Bare minerals collection.

Andi gelsthorpe of miss match rentals contributed the gold char-gers and flatware, crystal and am-ber goblets, and cream-colored din-ner plates from her Cottage White collection that brought added luxu-ry to the set.

glimmering amethyst and quartz from Doc’s rocks gem mine shared the table with handmade apple butter favors and an antique candelabrum from A Bushel and a Peck Vintage rentals, which also contributed a vintage underwood typewriter and antique-white van-ity with crystal hardware for other aspects of the shoot.

A stunning display of artistry from Fuschia moss Floral Design brought a whimsical elegance and deep, rich colors to a one-of-a-kind flower crown for our bride, a drap-ing bridal bouquet, and flowing centerpieces for our tablescape. Fuschia brought together products from mayesh Wholesale Florals, miss Kitty’s Dahlias, and Shady grove gardens to show off this vari-ety of eucalyptus, garden roses, an-tique hydrangeas, dahlias, thistles, pomegranate, succulents, crab ap-ple, tulips, amaranth, and more.

High up on the property’s steep-est slope, a 360-degree view of the Blue ridge made for some seriously jaw-dropping bridal portraits, fea-turing a vintage settee from Fus-chia moss, that show just how mag-nificent a high Country wedding can be.

When the High Country of North Carolina is your favorite place to get away with loved ones, it naturally becomes the perfect

place to say, “I do.” That was certainly the case for Katie Woodruff and Lupton haigler, who hail from out of town but have always enjoyed spending time at the Haigler family’s mountain home in Banner elk.

With their hearts set on an outdoor wed-ding in the Blue ridge, this happy couple turned to the experts and the beautiful grounds of grandfather Vineyard and Winery for a down-to-earth, lighthearted affair that would reflect their personalities.

“We are best friends and have an easygo-ing relationship. lupton always has a good sense of humor and makes me laugh,” Katie said. “We wanted a laid-back day where all of our guests had a ton of fun. i tried to keep the theme more rustic with simple flowers and comfort food.”

Because friends and family are an impor-tant part of life for the Haiglers, they decided to do something a little unconventional and share more than just the ceremony and re-ception with their approximately 120 guests.

“We had all of our guests come for the re-hearsal dinner and the wedding,” Katie said. “it allowed for the whole weekend to feel like

a big party.”on her wedding day, Katie wore a dress

from J majors Bridal Boutique in Charlotte with a sweetheart neckline, lace overlay, and capped sleeves for a classic look. The ceremo-ny took place along the riverside and was fol-lowed by a reception under the vineyard’s cov-ered outdoor pavilion.

The bride chose to feature baby’s breath in her floral arrangements and an assortment of ferns to keep things simple and focused on natural elements. For a relaxed environment that played up the mountain atmosphere, the couple chose to pass up the traditional wed-

ding cake for select local pies from eat Crow restaurant in Banner elk and displayed them on apple barrels for their guests to enjoy.

“everyone at grandfather Vineyard was amazing to work with. We loved the scenery and the backdrop of grandfather mountain. They also have a great covered pavilion that made for an awesome dance floor,” the bride said. “it was a perfect day, and everyone still comments about how much fun they had. We were relaxed and got to hang out with every-one and dance to our awesome wedding band, The deluge.”

morehead City, relied on the guidance and know-how of their vendors to make this des-tination wedding happen. Thanks to careful planning and the hard work of local experts, their perfect day was just that.

if you’re in the middle of planning your own mountain wedding, here’s the advice that Ka-tie has for you:

“Don’t stress, and take advice from the ven-dors you work with — they have done a lot of weddings and always have great suggestions,” Katie said. “At the end of the day, you will be married and the little things that went wrong will not matter. Just have fun.”

Katie and Lupton haigler's wedding at Grandfather Vineyard was all about sharing the experience with their favorite folks and celebrating with style in the heart of the Blue ridge. Award-winning wines, expertly crafted dinner and desserts, lively music, and a whole lot of southern hos-pitality made this wedding weekend one for the books.

The true love story of high school sweethearts Crystal Thomas and garrett Heninger began in grade school in Smyth County,

Virginia. They’ve loved each other for their entire lives, so it was no surprise to their friends and family when they set their sights on forever.

They’re adventurous, down-to-earth, and they love to travel. of all the places they like to visit, the most special to them has always been leatherwood mountains resort in Ferguson, North Carolina — a secluded, equestrian-in-clusive resort that allows them to bring their own horses on their getaways.

After garrett popped the question on a New year’s ski lift ride in gatlin-burg, Tennessee, these two knew right away they wanted to get married at leatherwood.

“Not only was the setting gorgeous, but the people who worked there were so friendly and helpful that i felt comfort-able and relaxed from just being there," Crystal said. "We really wanted to share that with our closest friends and family."

At leatherwood, the couple was able to include their own horses, "Cool" and "Pepper," and their dogs, "Caine" the german shepherd and "Weenie" the dachshund, in their special day.

Crystal knew exactly what she wanted for her late summer ceremony and reception and, rather than hiring a consultant, she was able to make it all happen with the help of the resort’s full-service staff.

She wanted to include elements of lace and antique charm, and she found just that in her wedding dress at the downtown Boone bridal shop, Did Someone Say Party?

“i found a gown with sleeves, an open back, and lace overlay that i never dreamed i would like, but i fell in love with as soon as I tried it on,” she said. “They were able to order it for me and it fit like a dream.”

back closure. glimmering with metallic lace appliqués and embroidered with Swarovski crystals that drift from the shoulder to the floor-skimming hem, the dress was the final touch to the storybook wedding she imagined.

To keep the day focused on the ex-changing of vows, the couple decided not to include a bridal party in their big day.

in the hours leading up to the ceremony, their approximately 100 guests enjoyed horseback riding on the resort grounds, relaxing in the on-site cabins, and soaking up sunshine by the pool.

Following the suggestion of their photographer, the bride and groom made time to sneak away from all of the pre-wedding excitement and meet on the deck of leatherwood’s Cloud Nine Cabin to catch a glimpse of each other for the first time that day.

“I cried the first time I saw gar-rett,” Crystal said. “The Cloud nine

deck has some of the most beautiful views and it could not have provided a more romantic place for us to see one another for the first time.”

Family and friends gathered on that sunny afternoon for the wed-ding just outside leatherwood’s Hen-dricks home Place, an original 1840s two-story log home. escorted by her father, Crystal crossed the property and approached the ceremony on horseback. The day ended with an evening under the stars at the resort’s outdoor pavilion.

The newlyweds are now embark-ing on their next great adventure — a new life together in montana.

“i look forward to seeing where life is going to take us and really find-ing ourselves as a married couple,” Crystal said. “i am so excited because we are embarking on this huge cross-country road trip as a married couple and we’re doing it just for us, just be-cause we want to do it.”

The gorgeous grounds of Leatherwood Mountains resort gave this sweet couple the perfect atmosphere for their equestrian-inclusive,

outdoor ceremony and reception. The heningers opted out of some traditional wedding customs, like including a bridal party

in the ceremony, in order to keep the day focused on them, their vows, and their future together.

Timeless BeautyFor the area’s hardworking event profession-

als, winter in the High South is often a much different experience than peak wedding

season, which typically falls between April and november every year. The off-season gives them a chance to catch up on the responsibilities that come with managing a small business, but also provides an opportunity to collaborate with other vendors and let their imaginations run wild.

In January 2015, local wedding consultant CeCe Hampton approached the duo behind

Fletcher and Fletcher Photography with an idea to use the newly renovated space at Boone golf Club’s Fairway Café for a styled photo shoot.

“As soon as CeCe contacted me about doing a shoot at the golf club, i knew right away that i wanted to go for that old-school, vintage golf look. That’s what I had in mind,” Corina Fletcher said. “Because we were indoors, we really tried to focus on all of the details that went into the look.”

“We decided to evoke that old-school feeling in the pictures with the fireplace, the vintage furniture, and all of the little elements that brought it all together,” Corina said.

The vintage elements were paired with bold, dra-matic colors and textures for a stunning look that can transcend trendy fashions and imagery that will keep catching eyes for years to come.

“i loved the rich colors — they just really worked. i really like the pictures of the bride with her lipstick and the jewels,” Corina said. “I love the glitter on the tablecloths and the gold on the invitations. every-thing was bold and it was beautiful.”

“Winter and the off-season is often downtime for us, so you’re mostly doing mundane business tasks and you don’t really get to be creative. At weddings you don’t always have a lot of time,” Corina said. “so when you get to do these styled shoots, it’s so fun because you have more time to work. you can run with ideas for posing the bride and groom that you’ve never had time to try and you can really have fun with the vendors you work with.”

that’s often overlooked, but remarkable nonetheless.meris gantt, lead planner for The Whole Shebang

event consultants, teamed up with local photographer Joy davis in March 2015 to kick-start a creative collabo-ration that would pull in several other experts from the High South’s expansive wedding industry.

With sights set on staging an unconventional styled photo shoot at The Blowing rock, they brought in Kelly Perry of Philosophy Flowers, whose knack for storytell-ing and vision for dreamy artistry ushered in a romantic and poignant concept.

“Saying ‘yes’ to a marriage proposal is really fun and exciting — this is the 'yes' that’s recognized and celebrated. But have you thought about the ‘yes’ that was said first?” Kelly said. “It probably wasn’t an audible ‘yes,’ but it was grand. it was the moment when the groom decided that she was it — she was the one he loved and wanted to call his bride. There is a ‘yes’ before the ‘yes,’ and it’s significant.”

The team of talented artists shared a common goal: to tell the story of a groom’s perspective on finding his perfect match.

in the photography, the groom explores through stones and other natural elements along one of the park's trails for a hidden gem. His search is symbolic of every groom’s journey to find love, and his discovery of the geode represents the moment he found his match and his decision to choose her forever.

The shoot also aimed to highlight the grandeur and stunning views of The Blowing rock.

“it took place at such an iconic location that is one of the cornerstones of our area,” Meris said. “you can feel the history as you walk the trails and look out over the mountains.”

Styled shoots and other projects like this one give local vendors a chance to work together in a purely cre-ative environment and use their united vision to inspire their clients, their colleagues, and other professionals in the wedding industry.

“The events we put on are for our clients, but styled shoots are a chance for all of us to really come together,” meris said. “it’s a great way for us to showcase our work and produce something that is uniquely ours. There’s a great sense of community in pulling together a project just for fun.”

Caroline Howe grew up right here in the High South, but she now calls the nation’s capital her home. inspired by the glory of the moun-tains that she knows and loves, she brought

her groom, Benjamin Clapp, back here for a chic and so-phisticated autumn affair.

The couple met while working together for a startup company in Washington D.C., but felt drawn to the hills of the High Country to exchange their vows. The bride described her vision for the big day as “southern, Blue ridge Mountain glam.”

“Fall is my favorite season,” Caroline said. “I love october and the natural beauty of the Blue ridge moun-tains in the fall.”

They were married on a colorful day before 150 guests at the historic St. mary of the Hills episcopal Church, followed by a reception at the nearby Blowing rock Country Club.

The bride chose to fill the environment with as many of her favorite flowers as possible.

“Hydrangeas were everywhere — on the chandeliers, on the tables, and carried by bridesmaids,” she said.

Caroline wore the Preston dress by designer Amsale, which she found at l’elite Boutique in Boston. The silk magnolia slim fit-to-flare gown features a sheer neckline and a sheer back with bow detail, and she paired the dress with a lace jacket from designer marchesa.

The couple hired an all-star team of local experts to bring their wedding plans to reality, including the duo at Burton Photography.

“Caroline and Ben are smart, sophisticated, and fun-loving,” said Bonnie Burton, who captured the day from behind the camera. “They really cared about their wed-ding photography and were willing to give us the time and opportunity to create beautiful images of them on their wedding day.”

Knowing the community holds a special place in the bride’s heart, the Burtons were able to include many of her favorite spots in town in the couple’s romantic, after-ceremony portraits.

WHAT TO EXPECTit will take your photographer a lot more time to

edit and prepare your images than it will for them to shoot your wedding, so be realistic and try to un-derstand that it may take them awhile to get your proofs back to you. Talk to them about how many shots you’ll get from them, whether or not they’ll be retouched, and how long it will take for you to get them back.

The story behind the union of this Virginia couple is unique, but poignant and sweet in the most wonderful way. Fate brought educators Beka larson and Dean Topodas

together in the area of Washington, D.C. in early 2014, and the rest is history.

“We were both working at the same school. he is an administrator and I’m an art teacher,” Beka said. “i started working there in February, we started dating in april, and then it just took off like a rocket.”

Just 15 weeks later, they eloped by the Potomac river in front of a small group of friends and family in a private ceremony.

“my son, Hayden, was in the wedding, as well as dean’s daughter, Lydia. My first husband passed away from cancer, and i’m very close to his family — they took me in and adopted me,” Beka said. “They’re very good people and Dean wanted to have my late husband’s father perform the ceremony, so he did. he became certified to marry us and we got married on the bank of the Potomac.”

To get more of their friends and family involved in the experience, they chose to have a second, more traditional ceremony a few months later at the home of Dean’s parents in the Blue ridge mountain Club of Blowing rock, North Carolina.

“Dean’s family has a tradition of people eloping and then having a sec-ond wedding to get married in front of everyone. His parents and his grandpar-ents did the same thing,” Beka said. “he is very much a traditional kind of guy and wanted the big ceremony and walking down the aisle — it took everything i had to convince him not to wear a top hat.

“i don’t like attention at all, so i just wanted to do the elopement. We com-promised and decided to do something very intimate and warm, but still very el-egant.”

A week before the big day, perfect weather was in the forecast for their out-door Nov. 1 wedding, which was sched-uled to take place with the jaw-dropping mountain views in the background.

However, they woke that day to freez-ing temperatures, potential snowfall, and winds of up to 45 mph that made it nearly impossible to get married beneath the tent that was already set up outside.

With just hours to go before the main event, and with guidance from consultant

elizabeth hempfling, the couple opted to move the wedding inside Dean’s parents’ home.

“Hiring elizabeth and Kristi and their team was the best decision we ever made,” Beka said. “With four hours left, they literally cleaned out the entire inside of his parents’ house, moved furniture around, and made room for a dance floor. What they did was awesome.”

Despite the major last-minute change in plans, the wedding went off without a hitch once moved indoors and created an even more personal atmosphere that was shared with 60-65 guests.

“I’d say it was really kind of perfect,” Beka said. “We’re both very casual peo-ple, so we were able to have something very classy, elegant, and high-end, but still have conversations with the staff as if we’d been friends with them forever.”

it may have happened unconvention-ally, but Dean and Beka’s story is one of an extraordinary love made even more marvelous by the beauty of the Blue ridge.

“everyone there is so down-to-earth, honest, and real, which is a big difference from d.C.,” Beka said. “We fell in love with Boone while we were there. ideally, we’d like to retire there and live in the mountains forever.”

What happens when two world travelers fall head over heels and decide to get married in the High South? An epic love story, of course, and a jaw-dropping wedding to match.

meagan gunning and William Polan each left the comforts of home — Pennsylvania for her and Texas for him — to pursue careers in ser-vice with the Peace Corps. They crossed paths while serving overseas and quickly realized they were meant to journey through life together.

“We met in azerbaijan while serving in the united states Peace Corps. We fell for each other immediately,” Meagan said. “We both loved the work we were doing and being able to share that kind of experience and challenge with your partner is rare and wonderful. he is my best friend.”

These two jet-setting good Samaritans knew their big day would dou-ble as a reunion for their loved ones and friends. So, when it came time to tie the knot, they chose the southern hospitality and the natural beauty of the Blue ridge mountains, where they’ve been spending holidays with family for several years.

“We live abroad, but we wanted the wedding to be welcoming and relaxed for everyone, so we chose an outdoor venue. Since we love travel-ing and have spent our entire relationship doing so, we decided to have a travel-themed wedding,” Meagan said. “It was easy to fall in love with the area, so it was a swift decision when it came time for picking a venue.”

meagan already had a dress on hold when she found her perfect gown in New york, and she made a last minute switch when she knew the second one was made for her.

“i already had a dress in Brook-lyn that i thought was the one, but the minute i tried mine on i never wanted to take it off. It has capped sleeves and an open back,” she said. “it is a sheath style with really light, flowing fabric. It is very romantic and timeless.”

“The whole day was colorful and full of love. We don’t live a very traditional lifestyle, and I think our wedding reflected that,” Meagan said. “We rocked out at our ceremony to Florence + The machine and Borns instead of using a string quartet. our decorations were home-made and our families joined together to make all of our family reci-pes for the dessert table.”

Hands down, meagan said opting to hire local vendors and the team at The Whole Shebang was the best decision she made in the process of pulling her wedding together.

“i was planning a wedding from abroad on a tight budget and it was such a relief to have someone I trusted helping me find local ven-ues and take care of the ground work that I couldn’t do via skype,” meagan said. “meris understood exactly what i wanted and helped me create a perfect day. if anything went wrong the day of, i wasn’t aware because meris and her team were such rock stars.

“The local vendors and wedding planners are fun and down to earth, know the area so well, and are all one big wedding planning family. They love to work with each other, and that makes things so much better.”

After they exchanged vows, the new mr. and mrs. Polan turned to head toward their reception festivities when their friends and fam-ily surprised them by releasing butterflies into the air.

“The butterflies were an amazing surprise from my mom. you can see my look of shock and joy in the pictures, and it’s pretty hilari-ous,” Meagan said. “our favorite song, ‘electric Love’ by Borns, was blasting, butterflies were everywhere, our friends and family were cheering, and i had just married my best friend. it was the happiest moment of my life.”

“Some people will come to us and ask us to choose

This local couple is all about sweet, sim-ple, happy love, and the same was true for their wedding day. lindsey Trues-dale and Seth Sullivan exchanged vows

in a ceremony surrounded by all of the things that make them smile — family, friends, and the Blue ridge mountains.

These two describe their relationship as “one of constant growth and never-ending entertain-ment, love, and support.” They wanted to be sure their big day was a comfortable celebration that would reflect their personality as a couple.

“We knew we wanted to get married in the high Country because it is home,” Lindsey said.

“one of our first dates was a beautiful afternoon spent at Valle Crucis Park, making it a special place for us, so it was at the top of our list when we were deciding on a venue.”

loved ones pitched in right and left to bless to the soon-to-be Sullivans and took on several roles in making their perfect day happen. Friends and family members each made their own con-tributions, like creating the stationery, doing the bride’s hair and makeup, bringing table linens, making decorations by hand, and even preparing the barbecue and the cupcakes for the reception.

“our community and our loved ones mean the world to us, and incorporating their various talents in as many ways as possible made it a particularly

special day,” Lindsey said. “seth’s grandmother was ordained a month before the wedding so that she could perform the ceremony.

“my aunt provided her collection of antique bottles and seth’s parents grew the flowers. To top it all off, our buddies at galileo’s in Boone threw us an awesome after party. everything felt so personal and sentimental, like a team effort.”

lindsey wore a minimalist style dress she found online, which fit this not-so-girly girl like a glove.

“It is a floor length white dress with an open cowl back and long sleeves,” she said. “after try-ing it on with the sash, i knew it was perfect. i felt like myself — comfortable and casual enough, but

also like I was the prettiest I’d ever been.”The wedding day also featured a special

guest — “Coach,” the couple’s beloved great Pyrenees who has literally been a lifesaver.

“We were living in Valle Crucis when we got engaged, but, unfortunately, our house caught fire and we had to move. When the house fire happened in February, seth was at work and I was asleep,” Lindsey said. “Coach woke me up in time to get out of the house safely. He’s our hero fur child, and we knew we wanted him to at least make an appear-ance so everyone could see him and so we could have some family photos.”

After the ceremony, the couple and their guests enjoyed their favorite southern side dishes catered by Proper restaurant with their homemade barbecue, along with cider from Ap-palachian mountain Brewery.

later that afternoon, the two took a ro-mantic stroll around the park to reflect on their memorable day, which focused on the people and the mountains they love so much.

“my favorite moment was walking down the aisle and around the park with my husband,” said the new mrs. Sullivan. “There was a sense of relief that we had pulled it off, and also pure joy knowing that we were starting a new adven-ture together. We walked over to this incredible field of goldenrod with our photographer and neither of us could stop smiling.”

These high school sweethearts from lenoir, north Carolina went off to college together at n.C. state university in raleigh, where they now live as mr. and mrs. mcgarvey.

“our relationship is based on friendship, and i think that’s a very important part of our mar-riage,” Karlee said. “We are very open with each other and make all of our decisions together.”

They love living in the state’s capital city, but

they looked back to western North Carolina when it was time to choose a wedding venue.

“We wanted to get married in the High Country because we both enjoy the mountain scenery. We envisioned our wedding as elegant and romantic,” the bride said. “We wanted the atmosphere of our wedding to be fun for our family and friends who were celebrating the next chapter of our lives.”

Karlee wore an A-line dress from Asheville’s Wildflower Bridal that features ruffled details and delicate lace.

“i absolutely love my dress. it was very light and fit the elegant style I wanted to have,” the bride said. “my mother-in-law also made my veil and added small pearls to it so that it would

match perfectly.”Friends and family mean so much to this cou-

ple that they incorporated them into the big day in several ways, including each of their siblings and their Border collie, gracie, in the ceremony.

“i would say that our wedding complemented our personalities perfectly. We both love spend-ing time with our family and friends, and they were a big part of the wedding,” Karlee said. “We also chose to have a memory table, which included pictures of our grandparents who are no longer with us.”

The new mrs. mcgarvey said her favorite mo-ment from the big day was exchanging the vows they wrote for each other with her groom.


“We both decided not to share them with each other until that moment, so the only other person who knew what we were going to say was our preacher,” she said. “We had both put so much time and thought into what we were going to say to express how much we love each other and about the commitment we were making.”

The couple opted to host their reception at the green Park inn, one of the High Country’s most celebrated historic treasures. The evening also featured a variety of personal touches, like mono-grammed corn hole boards to keep the guests en-tertained during cocktail hour.

“We both felt that the inn had a very elegant feel and would help set the atmosphere for our wedding,” Karlee said. “We chose a lighter color pallet to stay within the romantic feel and asked

our florist, desi Parker, to keep the centerpieces very simple by using only one type of flower.”

Although they were open to the advice of lo-cal professionals, Karlee and Sean took the time to consider all of the options when planning their wedding and made sure they were making every decision together as one.

So, what’s Karlee’s advice for planning a story-book wedding in the High South?

“Choose a wonderful photographer and vid-eographer. They captured moments that i did not remember at first, but now I can look back on each one,” she said. “have as much fun as you can and don’t stress about every detail. At the end of the day, your wedding day is about the commitment that you and your husband are making and start-ing the next step in your lives together.”

Spiritual and SpontaneousJennifer Betesh and Solomon Sorcher left the bright lights and the

big city for the serenity of the Blue ridge and were married high in the hills on a misty mountain day.

Sol proposed in early spring after this free-spirited couple traveled from maine to georgia along the Appalachian Trail.

“in march, Sol proposed while we were visiting my parents in New Jer-sey,” Jennifer said. “We didn’t want to wait another day to get married, so we planned the whole wedding in two weeks!”

Both coming from orthodox Jewish families, the bride and groom planned for a traditional Jewish ceremony in an intimate atmosphere. Still feeling inspired by their journey through Appalachia, they found the per-fect venue at the Art of living retreat Center in Boone.

“i wanted our wedding to be very low-key and very natural, channeling the garden of eden,” Jennifer said. “Both sol and I could not imagine get-ting married anywhere but in the Blue ridge Mountains.”

This go-with-the-flow bride found her ethereal gown in Manhattan just three days before they ventured south for the big day.

“We gathered our closest friends and family, road-tripped 14 hours from

New york to North Carolina, and spent the week-end hiking, meditating in the mountains, and just living freely and spontaneously,” Jennifer said. “We traveled with 15 friends and we all jumped into Trout lake on the Blue ridge Parkway at 3 a.m. the night before our wedding.”

Following Jewish tradition, they were mar-ried under a chuppah, or a canopy that symbol-ized god’s watchfulness over the couple on their wedding day, which was built for them from birch wood by local florist Fuschia Moss.

“it was a very spiritual day, especially being so high up in the mountains,” Jennifer said. “It was pouring rain, so we couldn’t see the moun-tains, but there was something so serene about looking out the window and just seeing white clouds, like we were elevated above the physical world.”

The Sorchers are now back in New york City running Solifornia Fishing Company, a creative brand they established that was inspired by their travels through Appalachia.

Although they’re back in the big city, their wedding photography brings each of their favor-ite memories back to life.

“The best decision i made was to have our wedding in Boone and to have my closest friends and family experience the Blue ridge mountains in such a spiritual way,” Jennifer said. “standing under the chuppah with Sol as the rabi blessed us was my favorite moment. you could hear the rain tapping against the windows in a beautiful, cleansing tune.”

Natural Elegance

Surrounded by friends, family, and fresh air, childhood friends Dawn Fouse and David Pennington tied the knot beneath a wil-low tree at Chetola resort in Blowing rock. These two nature

lovers from Christiansburg, Virginia incorporated their favorite ele-ments from the great outdoors and relied on the help of local experts to make their dream wedding a reality.

“We met in the sixth grade at e.B. Stanley middle School in Abing-don,” dawn said. “We were instant best friends.”

They grew up together and stood by one another until their high school graduation in 2004, after which they were separated and lost touch. The friendship they’d enjoyed as kids quickly blossomed into true love when fate reunited them several years later.

“We were reacquainted after about six years of no communica-tion, and it’s been perfect love ever since,” dawn said. “our relation-ship is easy. We just go with the flow, we balance each other out, and we have fun.”

As children, the two shared memories of visiting the Boone and Blowing rock areas with their families to visit Tweetsie railroad, go skiing and ice skating at Beech mountain, and go hiking in the sum-mers. As bride and groom, the couple elected to return to the High South, which has been special to them ever since, to exchange their vows.

Dawn found the perfect lea Ann Belter bridal gown at a shop near her parents’ home in Knoxville, Tennessee.

“i put the dress on and just knew it was meant for me. it has a beautiful sweetheart neckline, a fitted bodice that goes into a fluted A-line skirt, and lace overlay that cascades into an organza ruffle that falls to the ground to a chapel length train,” dawn said. “The lace overlay matches the lace from my mom’s veil and gown from 1980, so i wore my mom’s veil in honor of her.”

The resort’s outdoor space gave them end-less opportunities to bring in reminders of the things they love most, like Dawn’s favorite wild-flowers in her bouquet and boutonnieres for the guys made with fly-fishing lures.

“my goal was for it to be a relaxed, fun party in a romantic atmosphere. That’s how we fell in love with Chetola — the wil-low tree as a simple but elegant backdrop was perfect,” dawn said. “The antique creel fishing bas-

kets, the earthy centerpieces, and the birch bark cake brought it all together. We used the names of our favorite outdoor places as table names in-stead of numbers.”

Dawn said the best planning decision she made was to hire meris gantt at The Whole She-bang and many other local vendors.

“meris met with me to discuss my image and ideas. Afterward, she put me in touch with ven-dors she felt would help bring my ideas to life,” she said. “my wedding day came to life because i started with her help and direction.

“i could not have imagined using vendors who were not local to the mountains. From pho-tography to stationery, it was helpful for them to understand that i wanted to bring out the moun-tains and the fly-fishing streams in all of the de-tails. They knew the area and were able to do all of that.”

Walking away from the day as mrs. Pen-nington was the bride’s favorite thing about her experience, but her most memorable moment was the first time she saw her groom before the ceremony.

“When i saw all of the final touches and then saw Dave for the first time, i was speechless and tearful,” she said.

Old-Fashioned Romance

Although they never knew each other during childhood, just a few grade levels and a couple of miles separated this bride and groom for most of their lives.

micala Bare and Tyler rash were raised right down the road from one another, but didn’t meet until their college years. They finally set eyes on each other when a mutual friend set them up on a blind date, and their love story quickly blos-somed into one for the books.

“it was right after my freshman year at east Tennessee state university, so I rushed home from Johnson City to meet Tyler in person for the very first time. We spent our first date getting to know each other with fishing poles in our hands,” Micala said. “after a few hours, we decided our fishing trip was embarrassingly unsuccessful, so we grabbed a bite to eat and then drove to an overlook on the Blue ridge Parkway. There, he wowed me by popping his tailgate down and ser-enading me with his guitar.

“When i got home that night, my mother asked me how it went and i simply replied, ‘i can’t think of a reason why we shouldn’t get married.’ Since that day, we have been insepa-rable — basically extensions of each other, always laughing, joking, or singing when we are together.”

When the couple decided to tie the knot, there were no doubts about hosting the wedding in their hometown.

“We couldn’t think of a better place, let alone a more beau-

tiful place,” Micala said. “our story began in ashe County, and we decided that it would be perfect to openly share our hometown with our friends and family.”

even before they were engaged, micala spotted an ivory ball gown with a sweetheart neckline, delicate lace, and a sweeping train in the window of South’s Specialty Clothiers in Boone. Tyler knew she loved the dress, so he bought it for her after his proposal.

“in passing, i was astounded by the elegance of it and i kept it in my mind months later when it was actually time to begin the search,” the bride said. “The moment I tried it on I knew I would never find a dress more beautiful.”

These two “old souls” chose to have a traditional cer-emony at Bethany united Methodist Church, and turned to the historic Doughton Hall Bed and Breakfast in nearby laurel Springs for their reception.

“i love history, old farm houses, all things vintage, and a touch of country,” Micala said. “I never consolidat-ed my style into a certain word or category, but i made sure the wedding was a perfect reflection of everything i loved — an air of elegance that was somewhat like a step into the past.”

The couple decorated their outdoor reception on the lawn of Doughton Hall with family heirlooms — com-plete with teacups, family photos, and her mother’s wedding dress on display — that added to the old-fashioned charm of this vintage-inspired soirée.

The bride’s favorite memory from the day was the quiet moment they shared right before the wedding.

“Tyler and i were able to hold hands, exchange letters, and talk to each other before the chaos of the day unfolded,” she said. “It helped to calm our nerves and remind us of what the day was really all about.”

The groom’s best memory is just as sweet.“my favorite part of our wedding day was watch-

When this couple from Fairfax, Vir-ginia was ready to tie the knot, they turned to bride leah Thomp-

son’s hometown of Boone for a chic and charming affair in the hills.

“my vision was to have the romantic elegance of a hometown wedding with a sophisticated, modern touch,” Leah said. “I wanted the ceremony to be traditional and intimate, and the reception to be a fun at-mosphere in which we’d be surrounded by friends and family, celebrating our love for one another.”

Her groom, Will Vanlandigham, a native of the Asheville area, also calls the moun-

tains of North Carolina home, so it made perfect sense for them to turn back to the High Country for this meaningful milestone.

“i did look around at other venues out-side of the High Country during my prelimi-nary planning phase,” Leah said. “I came to the conclusion that you cannot beat getting married in the mountains — the beauty of the High Country, the fresh mountain air, and the friendly local vendors make it the ideal location for a wedding.”

The Vanlandighams were married by the bride’s childhood pastor at oak grove Baptist Church in Boone, surrounded by the faith community in which she was raised.


“our wedding was a reflection of who we are as people — simple, easy-going, fun, and family-oriented,” Leah said.

They made it a priority to include their parents, who have shown them time and again the value of a strong Christian marriage, in the ceremony,

“We received a blessing from our parents and also took a covenant of salt — an ancient cove-nant symbolizing our love, loyalty, and devotion to one another,” Leah said.

Following their sweet and elegant traditional church wedding, they moved the party over to the Summit Trail Solarium on the campus of Appala-chian state university, the bride’s alma mater.

“The room embodies natural elements of trees, flora, and water features, as well as clean, modern lines and sophistication,” Leah said. “Family and friends spoke from their hearts during a champagne toast, bringing tears to a few eyes.”

guests signed their names to a rustic wooden cutout of the state of North Carolina in lieu of a traditional guest book and left with a sweet

treat from Boone’s own Appalachian Cookie Company.

“We ended the night by exiting through a tun-nel of swirling glow sticks and cheers,” Leah said. “It was truly a magical experience.”

Now that they’re on this new adventure to-gether, leah says married life with Will is simply “the best.”

For other brides looking for the perfect place to get married, she recommends turning to the network of talented event professionals right here in the High Country.

“The mountains are the perfect venue to take the vow of a lifetime,” she said.

So, what’s next for this pair of sweethearts?“Following our wedding, my husband and i

moved from Fairfax, Virginia to Winston-Salem, north Carolina,” Leah said. “We are thrilled to be residents of North Carolina again and look-ing forward to planting our roots here. As eric Church sings, ‘oh, Carolina, you keep calling me home.’”

When these two were ready to exchange vows, leah owens and Tim Hogg decided to leave their busy lives behind for a few days and

elope in the mountains of the High South.The bride and groom, a prosecutor and a police of-

ficer, grew up together in Jacksonville, Florida. They started dating in February 2015 and Tim popped the question seven months later.

“He is someone that i have been praying for, and I feel like he felt the same way,” Leah said. “We really want to honor god through our relationship.”

more than ready to tie the knot, the couple packed their bags and left the Sunshine State just days later, bound for a romantic getaway.

“We were going to get married at the courthouse later that week, but we wanted to do something a lit-tle more special. We were already planning to visit Ban-ner elk because his dad has a cabin there,” Leah said. “The Sunday before we were going to leave we found out that Banner elk Winery has an elopement package, and we learned that it was literally a mile away from the cabin.”

leah bought a dress from Nordstrom online and put a rush on the order so it would make it there on time. When they made it to the mountains, they drove to one of their favorite stores in Asheville to buy a tux for Tim.

The elopement package included two nights in one of the winery’s villas, a tour of the winery, photography, flowers, a cake, the minister, and everything they need-ed for the ceremony.

“We were married high on top of the mountain and we prayed before we exchanged vows. it was really cool that we had someone who we felt was a man of faith to preside over the wedding for us as the officiant,” Leah said. “Then, we went into the barn with the icicle lights

for our first dance and took photos near the lake.“it included not just a photographer, but an

amazing photographer. We had her for three or four hours and it was just us, so she was able to capture almost every minute of it. Then we were able to relax in the villa, and they even had some-one making breakfast for us the next morning.”

Not only were they happy with all of the ser-vices that were included in their elopement pack-age, they appreciated the quiet time they got to spend together away from their busy jobs.

“We were able to have more time to focus on god and what our vows were going to mean to each other and be in prayer and devotion to him,” leah said. “on the actual day, there were no dis-tractions, so it was just the two of us sharing that moment together.”

They’re now back in Florida as husband and

wife, and the couple highly recommends the win-ery’s elopement package for any bride and groom looking for that perfect, private getaway.

“As soon as you get there, they cater to every-thing so you can just enjoy yourself,” Leah said. “For everything that you ultimately spend, it’s re-ally incredible.

“The views were amazing. Just being able to focus on him on top of the mountain and saying my vows to him — that was definitely the most special moment.”
