SENIOR PROJECT

The administrators met with the senior class in August. One of the items discussed was Senior Project. This program provides seniors with real-life experiences in their career choices. For ten days in May, partici-pating seniors will “shadow” one mentor in a field in which the students have shown interest. During this time, they will gain an understanding of the practical nature of the professional world – an experience that will pro-vide the necessary drive to succeed in college. More information will be distributed in January, but we’d like you to be aware of some important details now. For a senior to be eligible to go on Senior Project, the student must:

Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 after 7 semesters

Be passing all current classes in preparation for graduation

Have no out-of-school suspensions during senior year

Have missed no more than 7 days during the first three quarters of their senior year (95% attend-ance)

Students need to find their own placement. A list of possible on-site sponsors is available in the office. The last day of school for seniors who participate in Senior Project is May 1. These seniors will be exempt from final exams.

SCHOOL COUNSELING NEWS A Newsletter for the Students and Parents of Solon High School

Editor: Cindy Russell November, 2019

NOVEMBER IS UPON US!

THE FOLLOWING ARE REMINDERS:

Seniors

Should be completing college applications at this time. Remember to indicate "I've Submitted" and "Request Transcripts" via Naviance. These two steps are

done on the “Colleges I’m Applying To” list in Naviance. This is very important! Pay attention to college deadlines. Allow your Counselor two weeks to process transcripts. * * All directions and forms are posted on the counseling webpage: www.solonschools.org/counseling. Some students taking AP courses choose to also take the SAT II Subject Test in June through the Col-

lege Board. SAT II Subject Tests are often recommended or required by highly selective colleges and universities. Check the college/university admission websites to determine if SAT IIs are recommended or required for the schools your student may consider for admission.

Senior parents are welcome to make financial aid appointments with our College Now Representative.

Appointments can be made on the SHS Counseling webpage.

Juniors

Should begin to look at their future plans now. Junior Jump-Start, an extensive college planning program will be conducted on December 6. Directions for getting started with the process will be presented by the counselors in all junior English classes. Parents, please ask your junior to share that information with you after December 6.

ACT and/or the SAT I are usually taken by juniors at least once in the spring. Students should register on the testing websites: ACT at www.actstudent.org and SAT at www.collegeboard.org. Remember to regis-ter as soon as possible if you would like to test at Solon High School. Our testing site fills up very quickly.

Students on an IEP or 504 Plan need to see your interventionist/counselor to initiate the request for test-ing accommodations.

Sophomores and Freshmen

Be aware of the academic, social, and extracurricular opportunities available. Participation makes high school a more rewarding experience.

Pre-ACT results will be shared with 9th graders. PSAT results will be shared with 10th graders. Sopho-

mores and freshmen will also meet with our career specialist through English or history classes this year

to continue college and career research.

**TRANSCRIPT/APPLICATION PROCESSING REQUESTS FOR CLASS OF 2020**

When requesting a transcript for a college through Naviance, you must also indicate on Naviance that you have already submitted your college application. SHS Counselors cannot send transcripts until you have submitted your applications online through the college or Common Application websites. The SHS Counseling Office requires that all college application/transcript processing requests be submit-ted to the office two weeks before the application deadline. Please remember that the Counseling Office is closed during Thanksgiving Break and Winter Break. To be sent by: Submit to Request by: November 1 October 18 December 1 November 13 January 1-14 December 6 We want to ensure that we have the appropriate time to spend on each request for processing, writing rec-ommendation letters and completing online forms. Please check with your counselor if you have any ques-tions.

TENTH GRADERS LEARN ABOUT VOCATIONAL/TECHNICAL OPPORTUNITIES

All sophomores attended Excel TECC Presentation on October 25. Excel TECC are vocational and technical programs available to students during the junior and senior

years. Opportunity Day Field Trip at Mayfield High School is on December 5. This field trip provides stu-dents to talk to instructors and find out more about the programs.

Field trip forms are due on November 15 (No Exceptions!). The evening program for all students and parents is also on December 5 from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at

Mayfield High School. Programs are available in auto mechanics, computer-aided drafting, construction management, construc-

tion trades, cosmetology, culinary arts, digital arts and technology, early childhood education, environ-

mental education/horticulture, information technology and programming, interactive media, medical tech-

nologies, performing arts academy, public safety, visual arts and design and more.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Now that letters of recommendation have been completed, has your senior sent a thank-you note to his/her teacher? A considerable amount of time is spent in writing meaningful letters that reflect the student's assets and potential for success at the college level. Please encourage your senior to follow through on this important gesture. A simple "thank you" really means a lot!

ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS

Students enrolled in an AP course are required to take the AP exam for that course in May. The fee for each AP exam is $94 (Research and Seminar Exams are $142 each). Checks should be

made payable to Solon Board of Education. The fee is due by March 1 to the Solon High School Bookstore or can be mailed to the bookstore at 33600 Inwood Road, Solon, Ohio 44139.

Please direct questions to Mrs. Kinney at (440)349-7307, [email protected]. Students on an IEP or 504 Plan who would like to apply to the testing companies for accommodations

should see their interventionist / counselor to initiate this process.

7 Things All High School Students Should Know About Transcripts

High school transcripts include significant information. What does it all mean, and how do scholarship awards committees and college admissions officers use the data to make decisions? College admission counselors believes the following are 10 things that are helpful for students and their parents to know when it comes to high school transcripts. 1. GPA is the most important factor when it comes to admissions. While it probably sounds obvious, no

single stat on a student’s high school transcript resonates as deeply as grade-point average. GPA is the most important factor in deciding whether to enroll a new student.

2. Test scores are a close second. ACT and SAT scores are not included on Solon transcripts. Most universities want standardized test scores sent directly from the testing companies. Students who did not identify where they wanted their scores to be sent, at the time of registering for the ACT or SAT, must or-der scoring reports online.

3. Rank and schedule difficulty also matter. People often think of high school transcripts as merely a re-flection of grades earned. Not so! Colleges also look to transcripts for contextual data that speaks to stu-dents’ ability to achieve. Solon High School, like many high schools, does not assign student class rank. As more high schools eliminate class rank, reviewing a student’s academic course selection and evaluat-ing course rigor provides useful data in determining selection.

4. Every year counts! Administrators want to see a pattern of predictable effort and consistent suc-cess. Students need to understand that high school grades count from day one. Many student records show they didn’t take grades seriously as a freshman, then they spend the next 2-3 years trying to resur-rect their GPA.

5. Administrators use past performance to predict the future, and then judge accordingly. If it sounds harsh to penalize a student for a GPA or inconsistent classroom performance, it isn’t without cause. Stu-dents tend to bring the habits they exhibit in high school with them to college. A student with a high GPA has demonstrated not only classroom mastery but also a willingness to complete outside assignments to a high standard and get them turned in on time. Much of college success comes from being a serious and disciplined student.

6. The admissions process doesn’t end with the first transcript submitted. While most students will ap-ply for and be accepted to a university before getting a final high school transcript, the process doesn’t end there. Those qualifying for federal financial aid such as Pell Grants will need to provide final docu-ments before funds can be disbursed. As soon as students graduate from high school, they should get that last transcript sent so that nothing holds up their financial assistance.

7. College credit must be properly documented. Today more students are taking college courses while in

high school, such as Dual Credit or CCP. Students must have official transcripts from the college granting

the credits sent directly to the university they will attend in the fall. Students also need to have all Ad-

vanced Placement Test scores sent from the College Board as soon as they are available. This can mini-

mize problems when it comes time to register for fall classes.

As usual, the PTA has been very busy this past month: distributing Homecoming t-shirts, the staff ap-preciation luncheon, After Prom designer purse raffle, Halloween treats for students, and one of our biggest events, Budget Bin! Budget Bin is a consignment and donation resale shop that is set up each Fall and Spring to raise mon-ey for scholarships for our Seniors! All the PTAs of the school district help with this huge week-long event. If you would like to consign, donate or volunteer, we need a promotions chair for Spring Budget Bin or if you would like more information, please contact me. Holiday Pop Up Shop is Saturday November 9, 2019 at the Solon Middle School this year! Our chairs work hard to find quality, interesting and unique vendors for your shopping experience. The holidays are around the corner so come with your list! This is our general PTA’s only fundraiser so plan on coming and bring a friend! There is a minimal entry fee of $2.00. Thank you for your support, and hope to see you at our next meeting on 11/26/19. JoEllen Weingarten, SHS PTA President [email protected]
